Die »Einführung in die Kybernetik« ist eines der Standardwerke der jungen Wissenschaft Kybernetik, nicht zuletzt durch des Autors didaktisches Geschick der Grundlagenvermittlung. Ashby vermeidet es, für den Laien unnötig verwirrende Bereiche der Elektronik und der höheren Mathematik in seine Einführung einzubeziehen und verwendet satt dessen allgemeinverständliche Beispiele aus dem Alltag. Im ersten Teil geht es um Systeme im allgemeinen, um ihre schematische Darstellung durch Transformation, um Stabilität, Unabhängigkeit und Rückkoppelung. Im zweiten Teil des Buches befaßt sich Ashby mit »Information« im Zusammenhang mit der grundlegenden Theorie Shannons. Zur Erläuterung von Information und Codierung etc. werden zahlreiche Beispiele aus dem Bereich biologischer Forschung herangezogen. Der dritte Teil zeigt Verwendungsmöglichkeiten von Mechanismen und Information für die Regelung und Kontrolle von Systemen. Dabei geht es ebenso um natürliche Systeme (wie das menschliche Hirn), die Gegenstand der Physiologie sind, wie auch um künstliche, das heißt um die Konstruktion von Maschinen, die in ihrer Funktion der des Hirns vergleichbar sind.

Truman Capote, geboren 1924 in New Orleans, starb 1984 in Los Angeles. Seine Romane Frühstück bei Tiffany und Kaltblütig machten ihn zu einem der berühmtesten Autoren der amerikanischen Literatur. 2004 verkörperte ihn Philip Seymour Hoffman in dem Film Capote. Annemarie Seidel (1894-1959) war Schauspielerin, Lektorin und Übersetzerin, verheiratet mit Peter Suhrkamp von 1935 bis zu seinem Tod 1959. Sie übersetzte, in Zusammenarbeit mit Friedrich Podszus, Truman Capotes Roman Die Grasharfe ins Deutsche.

»Seit langer Zeit empfinde ich so etwas wie Glück, und da kommt das schlechte Gewissen – denn sobald ich an Dich denke und an die Umstände, unter denen Du existierst, habe ich das instinktive, anerzogene oder angeborene Pflichtgefühl, ich hab da zu sein, wo Du bist.« Der Wunsch, wieder bei ihrem Ehemann zu sein, erfüllte sich für Annemarie Meier-Graefe indes nicht. Im Juni 1950 hatte sie das Passagierschiff »Queen Mary« nach Europa genommen. Hermann Broch wollte bald folgen. Zwei Jahre lebte das Ehepaar durch den Atlantik voneinander getrennt, dann stirbt Broch im amerikanischen Exil. Der Tod im Exil ist der bewegende Briefwechsel des in den USA innerlich vereinsamenden Autors Broch mit seiner wesentlich jüngeren Frau, die in Europa ihre Heimat wiederfindet und sich mit viel Energie und Lebensmut eine neue Existenz aufbaut. Nur selten finden die zwei Stimmen zu einem Gleichklang. Ihre Lebenserwartungen und Zukunftspläne erweisen sich als unvereinbar. Mit seinen Sehnsüchten, Befürchtungen, Vorwürfen und Hoffnungen ist dieser Briefwechsel auch ein beeindruckendes Zeitdokument der Jahre 1950/51 – Annemarie Meier-Graefes Berichte aus Frankreich und Deutschland lesen sich wie zeitkritische Feuilletons –, als die Folgen von Krieg und Holocaust noch überall sichtbar waren und in Korea eine neue Weltkrise begann.

»Authentisch-biographisches Material« von Peter Suhrkamp galt bislang als »untergegangen«, wie seine ersten Biographen, Siegfried Unseld und Helene Ritzerfeld, konstatierten. Ein Irrtum, wie sich herausstellte: Denn es hat sich der Briefwechsel zwischen Suhrkamp und Annemarie Seidel erhalten, insgesamt 450 Briefe. Die Korrespondenz zwischen dem Verleger und der Schauspielerin, »Mirl« genannt, mit der er seit 1935 verheiratet war, erstreckte sich bis zum Tode Suhrkamps am 31. März 1959. Sie vermittelt zum ersten Mal einen unverstellten, detaillierten Eindruck seiner Person und seiner Arbeit. Die Dokumente zeigen, welche Kämpfe Peter Suhrkamp in den Anfangsjahren des »Dritten Reichs« als Leiter des S. Fischer Verlags mit der nationalsozialistischen Bürokratie ausfocht – und wie er unterlag; wie er im Konzentrationslager Sachsenhausen überlebte, wie er beim Neubeginn nach 1945 als Volkspädagoge in Gefangenenlagern auftrat, wie es zur Gründung des eigenen Verlags kam. Bislang kannte man Suhrkamps private Motive, seine Einstellungen zu Büchern und Autoren fast ausschließlich durch Zeugnisse Dritter. In diesen Briefen läßt Suhrkamp, selbst in unfreiesten Verhältnissen, seine Frau an all seinen Überlegungen teilhaben – und die beiden treten uns als Chronisten eines Vierteljahrhunderts deutscher Geschichte, Kultur und Literatur entgegen.
