This edited volume presents the latest research on the intersection of religion and medicine in Asia. It features chapters by internationally known scholars, who bring to bear a range of methodological and geographic expertise on this topic. The book's central question is to what extent 'religion' and 'medicine' have overlapped or interrelated in various Asian societies. Collectively, the contributions explore a number of related issues, such as: which societies separated out religious from medical concerns, at which times and in what ways? Where have medicine and religion converged, and how has such knowledge been defined by scholars and cultural actors? Are 'religion' and 'medicine' the best terms by which scholars can grapple with knowledge about the sacred and the self, destiny and disease?

This unique novel is written by the military officer and is based on true events. It explores the impact of war and the challenges it poses on one’s personality and character. After the main character was deployed to the war zone in the 3rd year of his military service, his brigade landed on the stretch of the front line that saw the heaviest fighting. Each new day could be the last for the young armored vehicle mechanic, who was shelled, lost his friends, and overcame psychological trauma. Does war necessarily leave one broken and traumatized, or could it build character, become just another part of life, and encourage self-reflection? The novel’s focus is not so much on the war as on the life, pain and experiences of the man who found himself in an extreme situation.

This study of the British colonial administrator James Tod (1782-1835), who spent five years in north-western India (1818-22) collecting every conceivable type of material of historical or cultural interest on the Rajputs and the Gujaratis, gives special attention to his role as a mediator of knowledge about this little-known region of the British Empire in the early nineteenth century to British and European audiences. The book aims to illustrate that British officers did not spend all their time oppressing and inferiorising the indigenous peoples under their colonial authority, but also contributed to propagating cultural and scientific information about them, and that they did not react only negatively to the various types of human difference they encountered in the field.
