        by Dr. Peter Hermes

The European or Mediterranean cultivated olive (Olea europaea L., subsp. europaea, var. europaea) is one of the most ancient cultivated fruit tree crops. Today, hundreds of olive varieties are grown to produce high-quality fruit for oil and for table olives consumption. The olive industry has undergone profound innovations in the past 30 years, due to scientific and technical advances, particularly in genomics, breeding, orchard management, mechanization and agro-ecology, although not all these developments are yet available to smaller producers. Olive cultivation has also spread to many countries outside the Mediterranean Basin, where it ihas been traditionally present for over 6,000 years. These new olive-growing countries are experiencing further expansion of the industry, due to increased awareness of the nutritional and health properties of extra virgin olive oil. This book is a much-needed update on olive biology and cultivation, with contributions from leading international experts, and includes: Biology Genetics and breeding Olive propagation and nursery Planting new olive orchards Horticultural management of olive orchards Plant protection Olive by-products (wood, leaves) Multifunctionality of olive groves and ecosystem services The Olive: Botany and Production is invaluable for researchers and students in horticulture and agriculture, as well as producers involved in olive orchard management.

        In State of Remembering

        by Tununa Mercado

Due to the military dictatorship in Argentina, Tununa Mercado lived in Mexico for almost 13 years, from 1974 to 1987. Her experience, codified as a novel that breaks the frontiers between genres, depicts the exile as an intimate situation that unravels complex and devastating emotions, where the narrative voice resists oblivion, the body fights for a place in the world and the narrator’s gaze elaborates a myriad of details in order to place itself in reality. To read this book is to illuminate the darkest faces of uprooting, poverty and violence that millions of migrants suffer each year and that have become new forms of dictatorship.

        Drawings of Hiroshima

        by Marcelo Simonetti

“The sky was covered with grey clouds. The drizzle was lighter than normal, almost pious. The Japanese were advancing through the streets with short, fast steps. Satoru was ahead of them. He pedaled at a good pace. From his bicycle seat, the city revealed itself to his eyes as a sequence of frames. It was strange to be there, in his grandfather's city, and to ride through it as he had probably never done before: on two wheels. Even so, the possibility that the route he was taking would intersect with the routes that his grandfather had taken when he was a child, provoked an intimate emotion in him. Those landscapes were over eighty years old, including an atomic bomb, but it was the land where Ryu Nakata had learned to walk, to speak, to read”. The death of his grandfather, awakens in the young Yasuhiro Nakata the desire to know the family history, especially after finding a letter in which he discovers another side of the old man whose last words were: 'Hiroshima, Hiroshima', warning of the existence of a secret. As a result, Yasuhiro embarks on a journey that will take him from Valparaiso to Hiroshima, where his grandfather emigrated ten years before the atomic disaster. This is the beginning of Drawings of Hiroshima— a charming story that allows readers to follow the protagonist on a journey in which he not only reconnects with his Japanese origins, but also questions his present, his interpersonal relationships and his interest in writing, deepening the unconscious desire to understand the role that he plays in a story that is not his own but yet challenges him directly. With this new release, Marcelo Simonetti addresses issues such as migration and identity, connecting the historic Chilean port of Valparaiso with the memory of the tragedy occured in the Japanese city.

        Cuando tomábamos café

        by Sánchez, José Carlos

The heart of Madrid becomes a stage that beats at every step of the protagonists of this story. A novel that perfectly stages the society of the last years of the Franco regime and the conquest for freedom of a generation of brave women who fought to make themselves heard. Matesa, the most convulsive case of corruption under Franco, shakes the political and social landscape in increasingly difficult times. Unaware of this reality, Adela, a young woman from high society, only has eyes for Carlos, a young musician she has known since childhood and who only cares about two things: living without ties and her best friend Constanza. When we drank coffee it is a novel that reflects the social idealism and cultural movement that begins to boil in the streets of Madrid in the hope of changing things. A song to freedom, to how to survive amidst so much uncertainty, but above all, to the efforts of those women and men who inspire us today to fight for our identity, not to give up and to be free to the last consequences.

        by Nauroski, Everson Araújo

The electronic prince: media, politics and society At the threshold of the 21st century, new media and information technologies promote the intercommunication of people and institutions on a global scale, opening up new possibilities, both for interaction between people, groups and organizations, as well as for their control and influence. In the relationship between economy and technology, global markets take on new proportions, penetrate social spaces and affect behavior. In this context, the economic-competitive bias in globalization, in the search for new markets and labor, has caused the homogenization of different cultures, affecting identities, values, beliefs and customs, which was pointed out by Ianni (1997) as a Westernization forced around the world under the sign of capitalism.

      • SECRETOS DEL CLANDESTINAJE (Secrets of the underground)

Las vidas que alumbraron el levantamiento zapatista (The lives that illuminated the Zapatista uprising)

        by Federico Ramírez

Faced with the repression of the popular student movement, which in October 1968 culminated in the Tlatelolco massacre, dozens of guerrilla groups emerged in Mexico. Conceived to confront an implacable enemy, these organizations had to develop and act clandestinely, behind the back of the law, without being able to fully achieve their objective of linking up with the people they were trying to lead towards revolution, since they only came to public light in quick and small propaganda actions or in violent confrontations with soldiers and police, who persecuted with equal ferocity both militants and frightened citizens suspected of sympathizing with the subversives. In society, concerns arose without a clear and reliable answer: Who are these people really? Why do young people who could have a decent future expose themselves to almost certain death? And what is their daily life like; what do they do when they are not robbing banks? Where do they get their weapons? How can they abandon their parents, their partners, their children? What drives the increasingly rare survivors to continue fighting decade after decade without renouncing their ideas? The novel Secretos del clandestinaje offers a comprehensive and authoritative answer to these questions; it is an authentic narrative based on shocking real events that the author witnessed and knew directly from more than twenty years of militancy as a member of the Directorate of the National Liberation Forces and the Command of the Zapatista Army. When opening the book, hundreds of gray men and women who talk, dress, walk, work and travel, without distinguishing themselves from those around them? because their purpose is precisely to go unnoticed while they follow a policeman, acquire military manuals, receive donations of medicines, work in an oil company, rent apartments with assumed names, fill out forms in an embassy, teach or take classes, chat in parks and ice cream parlors, drive a cab, sell ground coffee in markets and restaurants... to fulfill the modest mission that day corresponds to them in the great project: to silently build the revolutionary organization to overthrow the regime.Through the lens of literary art, the reader will see everything from student rallies to jungle camps, passing through safe houses, recruitment of combatants, political debates, armed confrontations, persecutions, ambushes... acts, thoughts, emotions of men and women who, in the search for a world of justice and freedom, gave their lives and, if the time came, also their death.

Angora cat in the washing machine

        by Manuel Giron

Angora Cat in the washing machine «It was to be expected that censorship would appear at any time.  The greed of those who handle the art market is too big and powerful. Speculation and money laundering cannot be stopped. Corruption is the backbone of the global  financial system. And the artist is a simple buffoon who appears and disappears by the mafia’s art.» «Manuel Giron has been writing stories full of humour and irony during his journeys, which revolve around the absurd. His short stories reflect vital dilemmas, everyday stories that the writer takes out of context with an enormous sense of humour. The author allows himself to mix reality and fiction, to express his opinions about the world that surrounds him with total naturalness, in a unique and very personal way, establishing a game in which the author participates, his characters and the reader.  Thus, the reader is bound by the force and the tension of the narrative, which wraps him/her up with the turn of each page. Sometimes, it is added in the storyline the wrongdoing and the ambiguity, causing hilarity and surprise.  Manuel Giron flirts with fiction, amazes us with his ideas, approaches and fables, while at the same time keeps his feet firmly anchored in the reality. His short stories constitute a magnificent and pleasant surprise, a compilation of ideas with an undoubted poetic background».
