The book includes the stories of extraordinary Ukrainians who made a significant personal contribution to the development of Ukrainian literature, theater, and poetry. Among the characters of the book are Lesya Ukrainka, Ivan Franko, Taras Shevchenko, Maria Zankovetska, Olena Pchilka, Olena Skoropadska, Maksym Rylskyi, Mykhailo Starytskyi. But we do not write about the gossip around them. We popularize the art of Ukrainian embroidery and highlight the private fragments of the lives of prominent Ukrainians that are little known to the general public. The book is organized in the form of a folder, which contains postcards-stories about the figure and a memorial item decorated with Ukrainian embroidery. The publication is the result of the cooperation of a team of like-minded people - museologists, embroiderers, scientists, clothing makers and publishers, who implemented a project aimed at popularizing the art of Ukrainian embroidery and highlighting fragments of the lives of prominent Ukrainians that are little known to the general public. Each postcard of the collection introduces us to the biography of a prominent person and the features of the domestic culture of that time through the presentation of a certain memorial item, which is decorated with Ukrainian embroidery. But the authors go further and present products sewn and embroidered by modern craftsmen, decorated with the same embroidery, as well as special schemes are presented, according to which everyone can reproduce both simple and complex ornaments from museum monuments in the material. The book will be interesting for everyone who is interested in Ukrainian ethnoculture, clothing manufacturing specialists, and embroiderers.
Of course, the fate of the artist was formed in a certain way because he realized his vocation - to be a poet. On the other hand, he lived his life as a professional artist. After graduating from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, T. Shevchenko worked as an artist in the Temporary Commission for the consideration of ancient acts (Kyiv Archaeographic Commission), applied for the position of drawing teacher at the University of St. Volodymyr in Kyiv. And when his plans were broken by arrest, then in exile, despite the strict imperial ban on writing and drawing, the artist was able to work in his specialty, although not officially. Shevchenko devoted the last years of his life to the development of etching, having received the title of academician in engraving. The publication consists of two parts. The first is devoted to the works of the artist, made in graphic techniques, as well as sepia and watercolor. Given the fact that there are few oil paintings in the artist's works, we singled them out in the second part, trying to break stereotypes about their perception. Each section of the first part is devoted to a separate genre, which was addressed by T. Shevchenko. The largest of the sections are divided into thematic headings, which allows you to see the works of the artist from a new, perhaps unexpected, angle. In turn, the commentary to each work contains a brief history of creation (places, circumstances, relationships, etc.) and artistic characteristics that reveal the performing skills of the author. In addition, an important addition is the part of the commentary "Interesting" and quotes from the novels, Diary, correspondence of the artist, memoirs of his contemporaries. You can start your acquaintance with the publication from any section or even heading. Traveling through Shevchenko's paintings on separate routes you will have a complete rich journey through the original world of the artist.
Over several years of expeditions, the Ukraїner team took thousands of photos of Ukraine from a drone. Many different screens have already seen our footage: from Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) to city buses in Warsaw. With the help of these images, we aim to share the beauty of Ukraine with the world. This photo book shows Ukraine from a bird's eye view. Fields, forests, coasts, snow-capped mountains, patterns of city streets – all these shots show amazing diversity and cause aesthetic awe. Despite the fact that enemy shells are still flying in the Ukrainian sky, we are already trying to make the whole world fall in love with it. The book is published only in English and is called “Ukraine from above”.
This is the third book in a series of conversations between Iza Khruslinska and Ukrainian intellectuals. The first two books were with Oksana Zabuzhko and Yosyf Zisels. The one with Yaroslav Hrytsak, although, is chronologically the first book. It was first published in Polish language in 2009. The main topic of the conversation with Yaroslav Hrytsak is the suitability of history for understanding what is going on in Ukraine in recent decades. Special emphasis is placed on Ukraine's relations with its historical neighbors – Poles and Russians, as well as Ukrainian-Jewish relations. But first of all, it is about the historical dimension of the current problems and challenges that Ukraine is facing - and to what extent knowledge of history makes it possible to understand future development scenarios. Since the Polish edition was published almost ten years ago, many things in this book have been rethought and rewritten, in particular, a new chapter has appeared on the development of events over the most recent decade.
Serhiy Zhadan's new book, "Vyshyvanyi. The King of Ukraine", is a story that is always relevant, especially nowadays. It is a story of love for Ukraine. Austrian Archduke Wilhelm Franz von Habsburg-Lothringen, known as Vasyl Vyshyvanyi, played a prominent role in the Ukrainian national liberation movement. Zhadan speaks about the project: "The figure of Vyshyvany is non-trivial, interesting, and deserves all kinds of mentions and study. The coming of Vyshivany to Ukrainianness and acceptance of his identity is not a fictional story. It is interesting to learn how many people are discovering Ukraine, Ukrainian history, Ukrainian culture, and the Ukrainian language." The book has already found its supporters and even received an award in the "Best Book Design 2020" competition, held by the "Book Arsenal" International Festival in cooperation with the Goethe Institute in Ukraine. This award is fully justified: the creative tandem of Zhuk&Kelm artistic talent has created a real gem. Designer Nadiya Kelm wrote about the work: "Vyshyvany got his nickname from Ukrainian soldiers because he liked to dress up in embroidered clothes. This was the starting point for the visual concept of the book. We took a very geometric embroidery scheme, which grows with each section, revealing more and more of the portrait of the Vyshyvanyi. The perforated pages allude to the Ukrainian vytynanka (paper cut ornament)".
The history of Ukraine is turbulent and rich, and the nature is truly unique, so it is not surprising that there are many attractive and interesting tourist sites. But which ones are worth seeing first? According to a number of definitive criteria, UNESCO has identified 7 main natural and cultural sites of Ukraine and included them in the World Heritage List. Moreover, there is also a list of sites considered for nomination in the World Heritage Sites List, which is called the UNESCO Tentative List; in Ukraine there are 17 more such sites. The guidebook by Roman Malenkov, a traveller and founder of the local history website "Ukraine Incognita", will tell about them all.
The Western understanding of what happened in Ukraine during World War II has been shaped by historical and ideological narratives created by the Kremlin. The Ukrainian version of the story has been dissolved in the concept of the “great victorious Russian people” and distorted by attempts to equate Ukrainian national army to German Nazis, while the occupation and colonisation of Ukraine by Russian Bolsheviks in the 1920s and 1930s has widely been ignored or artificially silenced. In her Four Essays on World War II, Olena Stiazhkina inscribes the Ukrainian history of the war into a wider European and world context. Amongst other aspects, she analyzes the mobilization measures on the eve of the war, thus questioning Soviet narratives. Scrutinising the social and political processes initiated by the Bolshevik leadership in the 1920s and 1930s, Stiazhkina concludes that mobilisation and militarisation were integral parts of Soviet power policy. The Soviet and contemporary Russian narratives about World War II have been used to justify the Kremlin’s policies towards democratic countries. Today, Russia remains deeply engaged in the falsification of the past, which underpins the claims of the so-called “Russian World” and the ongoing war against Ukraine. Olena Stiazhkina’s book promotes a new, historically adequate understanding of what happened in Ukraine before, during, and after World War II.

The unknown and classified KGB history of the largest country in Europe - Ukraine is the history of people, events, documents and files. The files have answers to many questions. The most important of which - why did a war begin again in Europe? Why is it so important for Russia to conquer Ukraine? Why are Ukrainians putting up such a powerful resistance? Historian Volodymyr Viatrovych, who declassified the secret archives of the Soviet special services from the Cheka to the KGB, talks about the history of Ukraine, the USSR and Eastern Europe from 1918 to 1991. The reader, is offered, along with various heroes and traitors, those who thought they were in control of events, and those who thought they had no power over them, to recreate the nearly century-old chess game between the Ukrainian liberation movement and the creators of the "prison of nations." Described in reports and recreated by a historian, this work looks at the cunning “special operations”, deadly moves, information wars and complex games among several players that are all an attempt to find an answer to the question: what creates our destiny - human will or circumstances?
24 February 2022 was not the beginning of Russia's war on Ukraine. Back in 2014, Russia illegally annexed Crimea from Ukraine, bolstered a separatist conflict in the Donbas region, and attacked Ukraine with units of its regular army and special forces. In each instance of Russian aggression, the U.S. response has often been criticized as inadequate, insufficient, or hesitant. The Moscow Factor: U.S. Policy toward Sovereign Ukraine and the Kremlin is a unique study that examines four key Ukraine-related policy decisions across two Republican and two Democratic U.S. administrations. Author Eugene M. Fishel asks whether, how, and under what circumstances Washington has considered Ukraine’s status as a sovereign nation in its decision-making regarding relations with Moscow. This study situates the stance of the United States toward Ukraine in the broader context of international relations. It fills an important lacuna in existing scholarship and policy discourse by focusing on the complex trilateral—rather than simply bilateral—dynamics among the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia, in 1991–2016. This book brings together for the first time documentary evidence and declassified materials dealing with policy deliberation, retrospective articles authored by former policymakers, and formal memoirs by erstwhile senior officials. The study is also supplemented by open-ended interviews with former and returning officials.
Ukraine: from Ancient Times to the Present is an express guide to the past of our country from historians Maria Takhtaulova and Sergiy Zhukov. The book can be divided into two parts. The first part contains brief information on significant historic events (settlement of the first people, the formation of Kyivan Rus, the Cossacks, etc.); the second gives a general idea of the cultural achievements of Ukrainians (language, architecture, traditions, and much more). A simple presentation of information and many illustrations make the book ideal for familiarizing children with the history and culture of Ukraine, as well as contribute to the interest in this science.
The collection of materials of oral history and local history journalism is the first archeographic and memorial publication in Ukraine, which directly reproduces the causes, circumstances and socio-demographic consequences of the post-war famine of 1946-1947 in Ukraine. The collection includes an archeographic overview, scientific and analytical articles on the peculiarities of famines in Ukrainian villages and cities in the 1920s and 1940s, a memorial and biographical account of O.M. Veselova’s ascetic activity, thoughtful reflections by A.I. Bondarchuk, an eyewitness to the famine disaster, and a collection of memoirs and journalistic materials arranged according to the administrative and territorial division of Ukraine. This collection is an attempt to preserve and express Ukrainians’ collective memory of this tragic event. For historians, local historians, museum workers, and the people of good will.
This book is not about war."How Ukraine lost Donbas" is the latest history of two regions of Ukraine, Donetsk, and Luhansk. This book is about the economic catastrophe of the region, Russian propaganda expansion, the formation of powerful financial and political clans, and the origins of separatism. We talk about how the powerful elites of Donbas first lit the fire of enmity, then burned in it themselves, pushing their region into the abyss of bloodshed.
The book contains a fascinating story written in the genre of popular science about the emergence of the Ukrainian Cossacks, their prosperity and decline. The customs of the Cossacks, their military art, religious life, daily life, organization and functions of the Zaporizhzhya Sich Army, the struggle against external enemies, and the contribution of the Cossacks to the culture of the Ukraine are analysed. The impact of Cossack traditions on the mentality and social and political life of modern Ukrainians is also highlighted.
Emerging Art in Ukraine is a book to be the first comprehensive publication about contemporary young art in Ukraine, that has flourished in the country in recent years. The authors named the project EMERGING ART since they are trying to demonstrate to the world the art of new age, young talents who each have an individual style, a specialised education, exhibition experience and promising creativity. And who grew up as both individuals and creative personalities alongside our country during its era of independence. Along with their works, the reader will find these artists’ biographies as well as their answers to questions exploring what art is for them and where they find inspiration; the manifestation of national identity in their works; changes in creativity during the war; and, of course, their hope for the future of Ukrainian art.
