Most discussion of visitor experiences uses a behavioural or managerial approach where the way the visitor thinks is ignored - it's a black box. Visitor Experience Design is the first book of its kind to examine best practice in creating and delivering exciting and memorable travel and visitation experiences from a cognitive psychological perspective - it opens the black box. The chapters draw on recent findings from cognitive psychology, cognitive science and neuroscience to provide a basis for a better understanding of the antecedents of a memorable experience, including: · The psychological process of the formation or creation of a visitor's experiences · Psychological aspects of tourism experiences such as attention, emotion, memory and mindfulness · Pre-stage experience: customer inputs such as knowledge, myths, values and memories from previous travel · On-site experience: co-creation processes · Post-stage experience: immediate and long term outcomes including happiness and well-being · Experience design cases Tourism, hospitality and event managers seek to provide WOW experiences to their visitors through better design and management. This book encourages the discussion of different facets of experience design such as emotions, attentions, sensations, learning, the process of co-creation and experiential stimuli design. It will be of interest to tourism researchers and postgraduate students studying tourism management, marketing and product design.

        Unhappy mothers

Women, motherhood and social change in postwar Britain

        by Sarah Crook

In the decades following the Second World War, mothers' experiences of loneliness, boredom and unhappiness were increasingly widely acknowledged. The language of postnatal depression came to be attached to this, but mothers organised around their own discontent in ways that challenged the medical model. Unhappy mothers draws attention to the social, political, and professional contexts within which knowledge about unhappy mothering developed. Drawing upon an extensive range of archival material, the book addresses themes around expertise, feminism, and the value given to lived experience.

        Sensory Tourism

Senses and SenseScapes Encompassing Tourism Destinations

by Ian Jenkins, Robert S. Bristow, Hilary Becker, Émilie Crossley, Sara Duerte, Carlos Ferreira, Carla Fraga, Elisa Alén González, Rubén C. Lois-González, Hairul Nizam Ismail, Sofie Scheen Jahnsen, Gunnar Thór Jóhannesson, Claudette John, Margaret Kenna, Jaciel Gustavo Kunz, Katrín Anna Lund, Sharanya M, Chandru M C, Velvet Nelson, Nur Haizum Abd Rahman, Breixo Martins Rodal, Carlos Alberto Patiño Romarís, Lucia Rubio, Bidisha Sarkar, Deborah Slater, Patricia A. Stokowski, Philip Stone, Tim Taylor, Kathryn Terzano, Trinidad Domínguez Vila, Dr Pola Q. Wang, Aristeidis Gkoumas, Nur Hidayah Abd Rahman, Karen Davies

Tourism offers countless global locations, providing a multitude of sensory experiences. These include commercialised tourism products such as saunas and floatation tanks through to natural phenomenon such as mountains and wilderness destinations. Consequently, sensory elements are a curious concept within tourism because every destination provides a sensory experience of one kind or another. The first of its kind, this book examines holidays and tourism through sensory perceptions which either encourage or deter consumers. It studies sensoryscapes and how they effect and affect tourism at destinations and be linked with the development of tourist niches, reflecting the segmenting of the mass market tourism into smaller segments. Finally, it reflects on how with increased urbanisation there a growing need is to find quiet spaces, free from urban or anthropogenic noise, such as silent retreats and dark sky meditation holidays. Escape has always been one of the main components of tourism development together with attraction to spatial locations that match tourists' needs. Structed to address each of the senses separately, this book provides a: · wide range of case studies from interdisciplinary backgrounds · links amongst common themes across the various threads of research on sensory experiences · theoretical framework and practical application for sensory tourism. It will be of interest to those studying tourism management as well as wider social science disciplines.

Medicine, health and Irish experiences of conflict, 1914–45

by Edited by David Durnin, Ian Miller

This book explores Irish experiences of medicine and health during the First and Second World Wars, the War of Independence and the Civil War. It examines the physical, mental and emotional impact of conflict on Irish political and social life, as well as medical, scientific and official interventions in Irish health matters. The contributors put forward the case that warfare and political unrest profoundly shaped Irish experiences of medicine and health, and that Irish political, social and economic contexts added unique contours to those experiences not evident in other countries. In pursuing these themes, the book offers an original and focused intervention into a central, but so far unexplored, area of Irish medical history.

Imagineering: Innovation in the Experience Economy

        by Gabrielle Kuiper, Bert Smit

To survive in today’s complex economies, it is imperative for companies to understand their consumers in terms of how and why they like to use their products. Distinction based on quality no longer provides competitive advantage. Imagineers use design methods to create meaningful experiences that connect consumers to brands, employees to companies and consumers to consumers. This book explains the background of the need for experiences and then focusses on how to design them. Bringing theory into practice for students of tourism marketing, event planning and business, it provides a window into the creative world of Imagineering.

        The anthropology of ambiguity

        Theory, praxis and critique

        by Mahnaz Alimardanian, Timothy Heffernan

This volume puts ambiguity and its generative power at the centre of analytical attention. Rather than being cast negatively as a source of confusion, bewilderment or as a dangerous portent, ambiguity is held as the source of the dynamic between knowledge and experience and of certainty amid uncertainty. It positions human life between the realms of mystery and mastery where ambiguity is understood as the experience and expression of life and part of navigating the human condition. In turn, the tension between the tradition in anthropology of examining cultural certitudes through ethnographic description and efforts to challenge dominant expressions of incertitude are explored. Each chapter presents ethnographic accounts of how people engage individually and collectively with the self, the other, human-made institutions and the more-than-human to navigate ambiguity in a world affected by viral contagion, climate change, economic instability, labour precarity and (geo)political tension.

        Dogs in the Leisure Experience

        by Neil Carr

This book explores the social and cultural constructions and debates of what are dogs and what is leisure. It looks at how working dogs play a significant role in leisure experiences such as ensuring the safety of air transport, and considers the differing roles and changing acceptance of dogs’ involvement in sport. Within the setting of the animal welfare and sentience debates, it examines the leisure needs of dogs and their owners. Providing an original contribution to our understanding of dogs as both participants and objects in the leisure experience, this book is a useful resource for researchers in leisure, hospitality and tourism.

Today Is a Good Day to Abolish the Patriarchy

        by Bettina Schulte (ed.)

Do we still need feminism in Europe? Equality or difference feminism? A new generation of feminists has now broken away from the feminism of the 1960s. The old white Cis man has been discredited, by the "#MeToo" movement at the latest. Sexualised violence against women has been outlawed, perpetrators taken to court. So everything’s good? No, of course not. Men still dominate public discourse; men are unchallenged in leadership positions in politics, society and business; male power still prevails in the domestic environment as well. The extent to which men fight back when they feel threatened by feminism is also evident in the revival of authoritarian nationalist politicians in Europe and around the world. The seven authors shed light on feminist struggles in different areas of life, and illustrate the range of feminism today.

Know Us 1. Know me again. June & Kian

        by Jette Menger, Moon Notes
