View Rights PortalRecent years have witnessed an explosion of interest in the 'spatialities of cinema' across the social sciences and humanities, yet to date critical inquiry has tended to explore this issue as a question of the 'city' and the 'urban'. For the first time, leading scholars in geography, film and cultural studies have been drawn together to explore the multiple ways in ideas of cinema and countryside are co-produced: how 'film makes rural' and 'rural makes film'. From the expanse of the American great west to the mountainous landscapes of North Korea, Cinematic countrysides draws on a range of popular and alternative film genres to demonstrate how film texts come to prefigure expectations of rural social space, and how these representations come to shape, and be shaped by, the material and embodied circumstances of 'lived' rural experience. At the heart of this volume's varied apprehensions of the 'cinematic countryside' is a concern to argue that ideas of rurality in film are central to wider questions of 'modernity' and 'tradition', 'self' and 'other', 'nationhood' and 'globalisation', and crucially, ones that are central to an account of the 'cinematic city'.

Tilapia are a group of cichlid fish endemic to tropical freshwater in Africa, Jordan and Israel, that are extremely nutritious and in high global demand. They are a popular species to farm because of their relative ease of culture, their tolerance to relatively high stocking densities, large size, rapid growth and palatability. As a thorough exploration of tilapia aquaculture, this book emphasizes the significance of this group of fish and discusses the crucial elements of tilapia farming, including their reproductive and genetic characteristics, the various cultivation systems employed and the emerging governance of the practice. It also addresses important health management issues, focusing on nutrition, immunology, and animal welfare and extensively analyses the diseases that afflict tilapia, how they are diagnosed and what potential zoonotic hazards exist. The value of the book includes: Contributing to the wider understanding of tilapia aquaculture and the importance of the species to global food security. Providing an in-depth discussion on tilapia fish health, including major diseases, nutrition, immunology and disease prevention. Giving detailed insights into tilapia genetics, production systems, and reproduction. Written by an international team of experts to advance the long-term, sustainable growth of the global aquaculture industry, this book is a comprehensive and essential resource for anyone involved in or learning about tilapia farming.
After securing popularity in home aquariums, zebrafish have also become an essential animal for biomedical research. Ensuring they are adequately cared for in research settings is therefore of the utmost importance and this book is designed to help laboratories develop good welfare and husbandry practices, refine procedural protocols and engage with ethical obligations. A wide range of topics are addressed, starting with husbandry aspects such as environmental enrichment, nutrition, housing conditions, diseases, health monitoring, biosecurity and larval rearing. More experimental topics are then discussed, such as genotyping, ageing, imaging, behavioural studies, experimental design and statistics. Ethical challenges are also considered through the environmental impact of aquatic facilities and the 3Rs - Replacement, Reduction and Refinement - with a focus on anaesthesia, analgesia, euthanasia and severity assessment. Zebrafish are a shoaling species by nature but this book also takes into account their individual needs by providing: - practical advice from experienced zebrafish caretakers; - bridges between data acquisition and fish welfare; and - the latest guidance for reporting, reproducibility and compliance. This book is written for zebrafish facility personnel and for researchers who are aware of the need for robust care for their zebrafish model. It also provides an unparalleled insight for ethics committee members with the intention to provide the best care possible for this ever-important fish.

Consumers stand perplexed at the fish counter. Cod or salmon; mackerel or sea bass? Or perhaps rather carp and trout? How about flounder and dab? Dab what? A terrific flatfish, but sadly hardly anyone has heard of it. And what was it again about organic, aquaculture, wild-caught, and that little blue sustainability certificate? Is catching your own a way out? Before you start thinking it’s time to opt for a chop and fried potatoes instead, read this book. It provides readers with deep blue facts from the world’s waters and analyses the global and local habitat of the finned creature.
Fish is the principal source of protein for people in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries. While most fish are caught from nature, aquaculture or fish farming is now making a significant contribution to total fish production. More intensive conditions of aquaculture often result in a higher incidence of fish diseases and disorders. As in the first edition, the focus of this second edition is on protozoan and metazoan parasites that cause disease in fish. Significant changes to this second edition include the addition of 3 new chapters and 4 of the original chapters have new authors.
This important new title on climate change, and its effects on selected non-infectious disorders of fish, contains contributions by internationally recognized experts who have contributed significantly to our knowledge in the area. Comprehensive and thought provoking, the text details abiotic and biotic environmental changes associated with climate change and their effects on fish in tropical, subtropical and temperate waters. It proceeds to cover in detail developmental, physiological and metabolic disorders of fish. Outlining both current and expected changes in aquaculture systems due to climate change, plus suggestions for further studies, this contemporary book is key reading for biologists, aquatic ecologists, fish health consultants, veterinarians, policy makers and all those involved in fish health and the environment.
