        Practical R for Biologists

        An Introduction

by Donald Quicke, Buntika A Butcher, Rachel Kruft Welton

R is a freely available, open-source statistical programming environment which provides powerful statistical analysis tools and graphics outputs. R is now used by a very wide range of people; biologists (the primary audience of this book), but also all other scientists and engineers, economists, market researchers and medical professionals. R users with expertise are constantly adding new associated packages, and the range already available is immense. This text works through a set of studies that collectively represent almost all the R operations that biology students need in order to analyse their own data. The material is designed to serve students from first year undergraduates through to those beginning post graduate levels. Chapters are organized around topics such as graphing, classical statistical tests, statistical modelling, mapping, and text parsing. Examples are based on real scientific studies, and each one covers the use of more R functions than those simply necessary to get a p-value or plot. The book walks the reader through the data analysis process, starting with very simple plots, and continuing through more complex analyses and programming. It shows how to deal with issues such as error messages that can be confronting for beginners, in order to set students up for a successful scientific career using R.Collectively the authors have a vast amount of teaching experience which they apply here to make the passage into R programming as gentle and easy as possible, whilst guiding the reader to tackle quite complicated programming. Infectious and Parasitic Diseases of Livestock (2 volume set)

        by P Lefèvre, J Blancou, R Chermette, G Uilenberg

Translated from the French original published by Lavoisier In this new English language edition all the chapters have been updated with new references and additional chapters written by authors in the UK, USA, Australia and Canada. In recent years infectious livestock diseases have swept across many countries, often with dramatic consequences for animal and public health. With climatic changes modifying the distribution of vector-borne diseases, emerging novel pathogens can spread rapidly in new areas, at the same time as resistance spreads in places where they are established. This calls for new approaches for the control of parasitic diseases. This book presents in detail over 130 viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases of large livestock species from all over the world, accompanied by very valuable and informative illustrations and photographs. Particular attention is also paid to the role of wildlife in their epidemiology, stressing the potential zoonotic characteristics of diseases where applicable and their effects on humans. As this a two volume set - higher delivery charges apply: UK: £8.00 Europe: €9.50 ROW - $15.00

        Enzymes in Farm Animal Nutrition

by Edited by Dr Michael R Bedford, Gary G Partridge.

From alpha-galactosidases to xylanases, Enzymes in Farm Animal Nutrition, 2nd Edition provides a comprehensive guide to all aspects associated with enzyme supplemented animal feeds. Detailing economic, environmental and technological impacts, this new edition brings the reader up to date with the considerable advances of the last decade, providing a unique insight into the current market. Chapters cover a wide range of topics using a variety of evidence from both in vitro and in vivo studies, providing a better understanding of the complex links between feed enzyme function, digestive physiology and ultimately animal performance. Particular attention is paid to new methods for the evaluation of enzyme responses, including holo-analysis. The authors provide a detailed discussion of the various enzyme classes that have been introduced into the market, exploring current use in the global industry and assessing the likely future trends and practices.

        Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries

by Edited by G Bianchi, H R Skjoldal

The ecosystem approach to fisheries management is high on national, regional and international agendas for sustainable fisheries management. Implementing the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries covers both theoretical and applied aspects, with a particular emphasis on practical experiences in the form of case studies from around the world, and tools for solutions. Researchers, practitioners and policy makers in fisheries, aquaculture, marine biology and ecology will find this book an invaluable overview and guide to fisheries management.

        Methodologies for Transgenic Fish

by Edited by Anne R Kapuscinski, Keith R Hayes, Sifa Li, Genya Dana

The decline of many individual and wild fish stocks has commanded an increase in aquaculture production to meet the protein demands of a growing population. Alongside selective breeding schemes and expanding facilities, transgenic methods have received increasing attention as a potential factor in meeting these demands. With a focus on developing countries, this third text in the series provides detailed information on environmental biosafety policy and regulation and presents methodologies for assessing ecological risks associated with transgenic fish.
