Marcantonio Raimondi, Raphael and the image multiplied

by Edward H. Wouk, Leslie A. Geddes, Jun Nakamura, Lisa Pon, David Morris, Edward H. Wouk, Henri Zerner, Tatiana Bissolati, Guido Rebecchini, Kathleen Christian, Paul Joannides, Bryony Bartlett-Rawlings, Beverly Louise Brown, Patricia Emison, Catherine Jenkins, Madeleine Viljoen, Sarah Vowles, Jamie Gabbarelli, Peter Black, Barbara Furlotti, Steven Milner, Jenny Spinks, Rheagan E. Martin, Sophie Gordon Cumming, Imogen Harley, Jemima Rose, Heather Garner, Max Weaver, Albert Lindsell, Peter Hayes, Monique Nievas, Holly Smallbone, James Wildgoose

Best known for his partnership with Raphael, the engraver Marcantonio Raimondi (c. 1480-c. 1534) enabled Renaissance artists to disseminate their designs in print, advancing a revolution in visual communication that still reverberates in our own information age. Yet Marcantonio did more than render compositions by famous artists in the novel medium of engraving. The entries and essays in this catalogue, written by a group of international scholars and published to accompany the first exhibition of Marcantonio's work in over three decades, reveal the diversity of Marcantonio's oeuvre and the scope of his innovation as the leading printmaker of the Italian Renaissance. In-depth studies of Marcantonio's engravings expand our knowledge of his collaboration with Raphael, while also probing Marcantonio's creative response to the dynamic humanist culture in his native Bologna and later in Venice and Rome. Contributions also examine engravings by Marcantonio's 'followers' and consider the importance of his work to the history of print collecting.

Lugares, recorridos y sentidos de la memoria histórica: Acercamientos metodológicos

by Laura Fonseca Durán, Diana Vernot, Tatiana Rojas Roa, Laura Giraldo Martínez, Edwin Corena Puentes, David J. Luquetta Cediel

This book is an initiative of the Regional Groups of Historical Memory (GRMH), which, together with the National Center for Historical Memory since 2013, generated proposals for the construction of historical memory in Colombia. The objective of the consolidation of the GRMH has been to recognize local research processes carried out by university professors to build bridges between the country's institutions and communities victimized in the framework of the internal armed conflict in Colombia.   Although the participatory social research bets are nourished by multiple edges, disciplines, and schools of thought, there are methodological peculiarities in the investigations that are formulated in the key of historical memory that, on this occasion, are transversal and are deepened in each chapter.

        by ANJALI ENJETI

"Captivating."—Jenny Offill, author of Weather and Dept. of Speculation   "Epic … A fantastic debut."—Laila Lalami, author of The Other Americans   "A magnificent debut." --Vanessa Hua, author of A River of Stars   "Deeply affecting."—Nayomi Munaweera, author of What Lies Between Us   A cross between Jess Walter’s Beautiful Ruins and Tatiana De Rosnay’s Sarah’s Key, and for fans of Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko, Anjali Enjeti’s debut novel is a heartfelt and human portrait of the long shadow the Partition of India cast on three generations of women. The story begins in New Delhi in August 1947, as 16-year-old Deepa navigates the changing politics of her home, finding solace in messages of intricate origami from her secret boyfriend Amir. It also begins 60 years later and half a world away in Atlanta as Deepa’s granddaughter Shan, recovering from a lost pregnancy and the implosion of her marriage, starts the search for her estranged grandmother. Spanning more than half a century, Enjeti’s The Parted Earth follows hypnotic characters on their search for identity after loss uproots their lives. Antoine Watteau

by Youri Zolotov, Vera Alexeyeva, Tatiana Kamenskaya

Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), Watteau incarnates all the grace, all the intelligence, all the poetry of the eighteenth century, when French tastes were triumphant throughout the whole of Europe. He is well known as one of the key figures of Rococo art. He excels in scenes of everyday life and theatrical costumes. His world is indeed highly artificial, depicting some melancholy under apparent frivolity, reflecti ng the deep sense of love beyond the pleasure of the flesh, the enigmatic atmosphere brooding over his landscapes and the drooping glance of lovers’ eyes. He alone possessed that genius for colour which conveys a sense of softness and mystery, a sense of music everywhere; that vigorous draughtsmanship which proclaims him equal to the greatest; that natural poetry arising from the dreams.

        Firkin & the Grey Gangsters

by Ann Scott-Moncrieff, Illustrated by Rojan

Firkin and the Grey Gangsters is a collection of four tales in which animals are the heroes. Firkin and the Grey Gangsters was in 1936 a metaphor for the fear of takeover by corporate America – Firkin is a young red squirrel who leads his people in a battle against a horde of grey squirrel invaders from America. Firkin speaks in Scots. The Sheep who wasn’t a Sheep is about the thoughts going through the head of a sheep, swimming between one Outer Isle and the other. The White Drake is a farmyard drake in Perthshire learning about flying.

      • Oleksander Hnylytskyj. Reality of Illusion

by Texts: Olesia Ostrovska-Liuta, Oleksander Soloviov, Solomia Savchuk, Alisa Lozhkina, Tatiana Kochubinska, Kateryna Tykhonenko

This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition Reality of Illusion. Oleksander Hnylytskyj (February 23 — March 26, 2017). The exhibition was constructed not as a simple final retrospection. It had a specific conceptual core, reflected in the title – the reality and illusiveness of the world in their intermutation and convergence. It is this core that combines incredible variety into a cohesive artistic world of Oleksandr Hnylytskyj. The artistic path was depicted not in the linear form, but in the conceptual form instead – the exhibition was disintegrated like a puzzle where separate fragments, cycles, blocks and meanings joined and intertwined with unexpected logic, generating a complicated “exhibitional performance.”

        Saving The Tsars' Palaces

by Christopher Morgan & Irina Orlova

Millions of people annually visit the great country palaces built by the tsars in a circle round St. Petersburg. Created by artists from all over Europe, with untold serf labour at their disposal, the palaces were intended to impress and they do. Today, in the corner of most rooms, a single black and white photograph shows the same room in 1944, amid the smouldering wreckage found by Russian soldiers returning after the three-year siege of Leningrad. Forced to abandon the palaces, the Nazis vented their anger on the treasures they occupied. The story behind these photographs is in many ways more impressive even than the rooms themselves. It is the story of a relatively small band of talented Russians who were determined not to allow their country’s heritage to be swept away by all the horrors of the twentieth century. The palaces today are truly the work of Russians but restorers have to be self-effacing. There have been books about what they did but not about them. In Saving The Tsars’ Palaces, Christopher Morgan and Irina Orlova vividly recount the remarkable story of those who battled to save the palaces, not just during and after the war, but during the Revolution and the harsh times that followed.
