        Psychoanalysis and the family in twentieth-century France

        Françoise Dolto and her legacy

        by Richard Bates, David Hopkin, Maire Cross, Jennifer Sessions

        In the last quarter of the twentieth century, if French people had a parenting problem or dilemma there was one person they consulted above all: Françoise Dolto (1908-88). But who was Dolto? How did she achieve a position of such influence? What ideas did she communicate to the French public? This book connects the story of Dolto's rise to two broader histories: the dramatic growth of psychoanalysis in postwar France and the long-running debate over the family and the proper role of women in society. It shows that Dolto's continued reputation in France as a liberal and enlightened educational thinker is at best only partially deserved and that conservative and anti-feminist ideas often underpinned her prominent public interventions. While Dolto retains the status of a national treasure, her career has had far-reaching and sometimes harmful repercussions for French society, particularly in the treatment of autism.

        Nordau to NASDAQ: The Evolution of an Israeli High-Tech Start-Up

        A Second Updated Edition

        by Miriah Yahil-Wax & Roni A. Einav

        “So how much are we worth, in your opinion?” I spoke up. “If some party, yours perhaps, would be interested in merging with us tomorrow morning, how much would we be worth?” Rick Gardner lifted his glass to the light, relished its crimson transparency and said: “My estimate for your company is between $600 and $620 million.” Then he smiled once more and emptied his glass. This crucial meeting with co-founder Roni Einav marks a turning point in the history of The New Dimension Software, one of Israel’s most successful software companies at the time, which was eventually sold to Texas-based BMC Software for $675 million. Armed only with an M.A. degree in engineering and operations research from the Technion, plus his unshaken resilience and determination, Mr. Einav (Roni, as his friends and colleagues call him) started to make his way. The book candidly exposes the power struggles and bold decisions that led to the extraordinary success of The New Dimension. Mr. Einav's analysis of his extensive experience touches upon trade secrets: How do you recognize a good idea? How do you cope with bureaucracy or inner dissent? How do you identify or create a significant share for your software products in the global market? Where do you seek financing and what do you do when none is found? Roni Einav's personal journey coincides with that of the State of Israel, from its inception. He served his country as a system analyst in its defense forces, and as a civilian he participated in the planning and construction of major new towns in pre-revolutionary Iran. Nordau to NASDAQ is a unique and true example of the bigger story of the amazing talents, daring, leadership and dedication that made possible the birth and ascent to prominence of the Israeli high-tech industry, which led to the country often being called a “start-up nation.” This second updated edition also covers the last twenty years of the author’s career and his active involvement in various technology start-ups, including the founding of high-tech companies such as Jacada, White Source, Eurekify, and thirty other ventures. An English-language eBook edition was published in 2012 and translated into several languages. A Second updated edition has been scheduled for publication in Fall  2024 by Samuel Wachtman's Sons, Inc., CA. 288 pages , 15x 22.5 cm

        History of the Throw-Away Society

        The drawback of consumption

        by Wolfgang König

        Sooner or later everything is thrown away. In the consumer society, however, usable and serviceable products that may be as good as new are also thrown away. Such behaviour is the result of a long-term process that has developed over a period of one-and-a-half centuries. The change was led by the USA, and the Federal Republic of Germany followed. It started at the turn of the last century with personal hygiene: articles such as toilet paper, sanitary towels, nappies and paper handkerchiefs. After the Second World War, a large number of other disposable articles were soon added, such as paper cups and plastic dishes, nylon stockings and pens, razor blades, beverage cans and much more besides. Wolfgang König shows how business and consumers have together made throwing things away perfectly normal – and discusses how the throwaway society may be overcome.

        One Health for Dog-mediated Rabies Elimination in Asia

        A Collection of Local Experiences

        by Vanessa Slack, Deborah Nadal, Sandul Yasobant, Florence Cliquet, Waqas Ahmad, Nihal Pushpakumara, Sumon Ghosh

        Although an effective rabies vaccine has existed since 1885, rabies continues to kill an estimated 59,000 people, and uncalculated animals, every year. Sixty per cent of these human deaths occur in Asia. To work towards the global target of eliminating dog-mediated rabies by 2030, the rabies community is applying the One Health approach. Written by a multidisciplinary group of scholars and rabies control programme specialists, this book is a collection of experiences and observations on the challenges and successes along the path to rabies control and prevention in Asia. It: - Grounds chapters in solid scientific theory, but retains a direct, practice-focused and inspirational approach; - Provides numerous examples of lessons learned and experience-based knowledge gained across countries at different levels of rabies control and elimination; - Brings together and highlights the practices of a strong, international rabies network that works according to the One Health concept. Covering perspectives from almost a dozen Asian countries and a wide range of sectors and disciplines, such as healthcare facilities, veterinary services, laboratories, academia, public health institutes and wildlife research centres, this book is an invaluable resource for rabies scholars and practitioners, but also those working in the wider fields of disease control and cross-sectoral One Health.

        The republican line

        Caricature and French republican identity, 1830–52

        by Laura O'Brien, Maire Cross, David Hopkin

        The years between 1830 and 1852 were turbulent ones in French politics - but were also a golden age for French political caricature. Caricature was wielded as a political weapon, so much so that in 1835 the French politician Adolphe Thiers claimed that 'nothing was more dangerous' than graphic satire. This book is the first full study of French political caricature during the critical years of the July Monarchy (1830-48) and the Second Republic (1848-52). Focusing on the crucial question of republicanism, it shows how caricature was used - by both republicans and anti-republicans - to discuss, define and articulate notions of republican identity during this highly significant period in modern French and European history. ;
