        Antimicrobial Peptides

Discovery, Design and Novel Therapeutic Strategies

        by Guangshun Wang

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have attracted extensive research attention worldwide. Harnessing and creating AMPs synthetically has the potential to help overcome increasing antibiotic resistance in many pathogens. This new edition lays the foundations for studying AMPs, including a discovery timeline, terminology, nomenclature and classifications. It covers current advances in AMP research and examines state-of-the-art technologies such as bioinformatics, combinatorial libraries, high-throughput screening, database-guided identification, genomics and proteomics-based prediction, and structure-based design of AMPs. Thoroughly updated and revised, this second edition contains new content covering: defensins; cathelicidins; anti-MRSA, antifungal, antiviral, anticancer and antibiofilm strategies; combined treatments; adjuvants in vaccines; advances in AMP technologies that cover surface coating to prevent biofilm formation; nanofiber encapsulation technologies for delivery and sustained release; and understanding innate immunity and the basis for immune boosting to overcome obstacles in developing AMPs into therapeutic agents. Written and reviewed by a group of established investigators in the field, Antimicrobial Peptides is a valuable resource for postgraduate students, researchers, educators, and medical and industrial personnel.

        Popular television in authoritarian Europe

        by Peter Goddard

        This lively and ground-breaking collection brings together work on forms of popular television within the authoritarian regimes of Europe after World War Two. Ten chapters based on new and original research examine approaches to programming and individual programmes in Spain, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Romania, the USSR and the GDR at a time when they were governed as dictatorships or one-party states. Drawing on surviving archives, scripts and production records, contemporary publications, YouTube clips and interviews with producers and performers, its chapters recover examples of television programming history unknown beyond national borders and often preserved largely in the memories of the audiences who lived with them. The introduction examines how television can be considered 'popular' in circumstances where audience appeal is often secondary to the need for state control. Published in English, Popular television in authoritarian Europe represents a significant intervention in transnational television studies, making these histories available to scholars for the first time, encouraging comparative enquiry and extending the reach - intellectually and geographically - of European television history. There is a foreword by John Corner and an informative timeline of events in the history of television in the countries covered. ;

One Year of Me and Tree

        An Invitation Letter from Nature

        by Xue Tao

An Invitation Letter from Nature series is Xue Tao's first set of nature-themed picture books. Since childhood, Xue Tao has enjoyed getting along with the plants and animals in nature and felt the rise and fall of all beings with a sensitive heart. This set of picture books for nature and ecology education just pays tribute to nature, as well as to a vibrant childhood.   An Invitation Letter from Nature series focuses on the theme of nature in the form of transitions through the four seasons. It currently has five books: Epic of Mountain Forests, Day and Night of the Little Wooden House, One Year of Me and Tree, Missing Bugs and Grass, Birds and Little Beasts as Companions. Each book has its own theme, just like five different landscape paintings, presenting different life experiences.   One Year of Me and Tree takes one year as the timeline and presents the growth of the little boy and the tree. The tree adapts to the four seasons' changes and becomes one with the earth and the sky. The boy is also growing up joyfully day by day throughout the year and integrates with nature.

        Speculation by Commodity Index Funds

The Impact on Food and Energy Prices

by Scott H. Irwin, Dwight R. Sanders

Commodity futures prices exploded in 2007-08 and concerns about a new type of participant in commodity futures markets began to emerge. Market participants, regulators, and civic organizations began raising concerns that inflows from new "commodity index" investments were driving the increases in commodity prices instead of economic fundamentals. The main argument was that unprecedented buying pressure from these speculative long-only futures traders created massive bubbles that resulted in prices substantially exceeding fundamental value. At the time, it was not uncommon to link concerns about speculation and high prices to world hunger, food crises, and civil unrest. Naturally, this outcry resulted in numerous regulatory proposals to restrict speculation in commodity futures markets through transaction taxes, speculative position limits, and even the bizarre idea of a "virtual reserve" whereby a public agency would take futures positions opposite speculators. At the core, these assertions raised major economic questions about the efficiency of price discovery in commodity futures markets. Moreover, these so-called remedies did not come without a potential cost. Burdensome regulations would increase compliance and risk sharing costs across the global food system-lowering prices for producers and increasing costs to consumers. To guide this debate, a rigorous approach was needed to understand the dynamics between prices and commodity index activity. This book documents a curated selection of papers on the impact of index investment on commodity futures prices. The chronology of the papers roughly follows the timeline of our involvement in the world-wide debate about commodity speculation as it evolved after 2007. The 10 papers follow the evolving speculation debate with new author forwards highlighting the contribution and impact. Policy-makers, researchers, and market participants will find this not only as useful documentation of the debate; but, also a natural starting point when high commodity prices inevitably create the next speculation backlash.

        Posthuman Journey Trilogie

by Pat To Yan, John Birke, Ulrike Syha

        The Lazarus Shares

        A Wertheim's Return To Berlin

        by T.M. Löwenthal

With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Germans offer to return unclaimed properties to the survivors and heirs able to provide proof of original ownership. This is the story of those who inherited the challenge of such an offer, those who would build a case to reclaim the assets and risk revisiting the past. Part exposé and part family saga, The Lazarus Shares is a tale within a tale, the story of emigrant wealthy Wertheims, Jewish Berliners whose present-day heirs face the ironic task of amassing proof of their family’s Berlin credentials. But it is in-between these timelines that the real story is revealed, a brother and sister trying to keep up with their mother, the wild Lili whose mastery of assimilation is exceeded only by her mastery of a vagabond life. Stretching from Kassel to Jerusalem, Budapest to London, Hollywood to Bogota, the story unravels one man’s stand against the past, Gus Maparae’s legacy to his daughter, Emma, the last of the Wertheims, the last pawn left standing. The author lives with her family in a small house on the Southern Carmel Mountains in Israel enjoying a view to Phoenician ruins, a magical milieu to her other pursuits as a teacher of Philosophy (Ethics) and local tour guide. An English-language eBook edition has been scheduled for publication in fall 2017 by Samuel Wachtman's Sons, Inc., CA. 360 pages 15 x 22.5 cm.

        Small Animal Veterinary Psychiatry

        by Sagi Denenberg, Ali Thompson

Problem behaviours are often the result of how an animal thinks and feels, genetics, and environmental influences. Steering away from just description diagnoses and focusing instead on emotional and cognitive causes, this book provides a practical approach to diagnosing, treating, and managing behaviour pathologies in dogs and cats. Beginning by addressing cases in the first opinion practice, this book then considers physical disorders that may lead to or exacerbate abnormal behavior. From there, the focus shifts to mental and emotional health, from an assessment of normal behavior and giving juveniles an optimal start in life, to diagnosing mental and emotional disorders, addressing emotions such as anxiety and frustration, and how to manage these issues - by modifying behavior, managing the animal's environment, training, and, when necessary, the use of medications. The second half of the book then addresses owner concerns, including management problems, aggression, affective disorder, elimination disorder, abnormal and repetitive behaviours and ageing-related problems. With an emphasis on helping first line veterinarians identify common presentations and offer help to owners, this book: - Addresses both normal and abnormal behaviour in cats and dogs from an emotion and cognition perspective; - Provides behaviour modification protocols, and drug doses and indications; - Includes handouts to be used both within the practice and with clients to help the veterinary surgeon manage the case. Written by international experts, the book translates their insights and experience into approaches taken in behavioural medicine. Also including the most up-to-date drugs, it is an important resource for both small animal veterinarians and students of veterinary medicine or animal behaviour.

      • Sophia

        by Masoumeh Kazemi

After the end of the celebration, the dinner tablecloth is spread out. Pamir is unwilling to eat as usual. He eats a few reluctant bites, leaves the table sooner than others, and goes to the room. He lights up his cigarette and sits on a chair by the window. He fixes his eyes on a faint star flickering in the corner of the sky. The nostalgic grief that the star shoulders is felt and heard as much as its remoteness. It leaves a bitter aftertaste in his mouth, bitterer than the thick cigarette smoke circling his head, bringing his loneliness's in Kabul’s Darulamann in a straitjacket right before his eyes, in a dilapidated house with most of its rooms in a state of severe disrepair and uninhabited. He lit up his first cigarette right at the time the pain of love was running to his bones. Moreover, for fear of losing, being forgotten, and cheated, he counted stars all his nights. “I don’t understand why I have this feeling for you . . .”Sophia is the name of one of the three main characters in the story. The sad story of Sophia and why she and her husband resorted to illegal immigration is the reality of the lives of thousands of Afghan men and women who have been grappling with countless accidents and disturbances for the past forty years. The story is written in the romantic-social genre, narrated through two (dramatic and fictional) timelines. The Baran character in the story’s dramatic timeline is the same young Sophia of the novel’s fictional timeline. After living in Germany for 20 years, Baran (Sophia) spends the last days of her life in a nursing home. She is forty-eight and suffers from brain cancer. Her adopted son, Ahura, is her only delight that had survived the ravages of time. He is a physician doctor and works in a hospital where Baran would eventually land. Ahura addresses Baran as a mom. Ahura’s childhood is included in detail in the novel’s fictional timeline. He is the son of Mahrokh (one of the three main characters in the story). There is a great secret in Ahura’s life that he himself is not aware. According to Mahrokh’s will, Baran took custody of Ahura after her death and invited him to Germany. Ahura’s mistress is a girl named Mandegar who works as a nurse in a hospital. The madness that brought Ahura to his knees out of this gray love often evokes the past in Baran’s mind. Years ago, not too long after Baran arrived in Germany and right after he was released from the lunatic asylum, he began writing his memoirs. His memoirs narrate the fictional timeline of the novel.Afghanistan’s civil war between the country’s ethnic and political sects hit the nail of the Taliban terrorist regime in 1996 on the head of an unfortunate population. This marked another beginning for people to flee over the borders.
