        Politicising and gendering care for older people

        Multidisciplinary perspectives from Europe

        by Anca Dohotariu, Ana Paula Gil, Lubica Volanská

        This book offers a new critical framework for understanding the processes of politicising and gendering care for older people and their manifestations in several European contexts. It interrogates how care for older adults varies across time and place while searching for an in-depth comprehension of how it becomes an arena of political struggle and the object of public policy in different countries and at various societal and political levels. It brings together multidisciplinary contributions that examine the issue of care for older people as a political concern from many angles, such as problematising care needs, long-term care policies, home care services, institutional services and family care. The contributions reveal the diversity of situations in which the processes of politicising and gendering care for older adults overlap, contradict or reinforce each other while leading to increased gender (in)equalities on different levels.

        Nutritional Practice Elderly People

        Concise advisory knowledge

        by Prof. Dr. Martin Smollich (ed.)

        The physiology and living conditions of people change as they grow old, whereas it is often more difficult to adapt eating habits to the new requirements. Psychological aspects come to the fore. The challenge for giving specific nutritional advice is therefore particularly great. This volume in the book series Nutritional Practice provides all the information needed for the competent care of elderly people. It deals with general aspects of nutrition in old age, as well as specific nutritional situations such as poor diet, dehydration, chewing and swallowing problems, dementia, mobility, oral and food hygiene or nutrition at the end of life. A further section is concerned with communal catering.

        Politics and provincial people

        Sligo and Limerick, 1691–1761

        by D. A. Fleming

        This ground-breaking study is the first to systematically examine the politics and political culture of provincial Ireland. The book compares two distinct localities that provide differing perspectives on how politics and power manifested itself in provincial Ireland: Sligo in the north west and Limerick in the south west. Drawing on a wealth of previously unknown and under-utilised contemporary material, David Fleming focuses on individuals who were determined to shape the political landscape and those who were affected by their actions. The book challenges many accepted models of how Ireland and the Irish were governed. While the propertied élite dominated many aspects of the political process, individuals and groups from the professional, mercantile, rural and other sections of society - the 'middling orders' - were also active in local institutions and office-holding. Their story, recounted here, reveals a far more complex set of relationships. Politics and provincial people is a carefully constructed story of people's motivations, ideas, and actions, and offers new insights into the complexity of their lives and the Irish political landscape. ;

        Oikoá

        by Felipe Valério

        The name of this book is Oikoá, which means life in the language of the Guarani Mbya people. This name was chosen because the indigenous peoples have been the guardians of life on planet Earth: it is in their territories that there are more types of trees and plants, animals, fish, birds, insects, and where the rivers and forests are best preserved.

        by Paul Sillitoe, Andrew Ainslie, Kojo Amanor, Jeff Bentley, Samara Brock, Stephen Brush, David A Cleveland, Luisa Cortesi, Michael R Dove, Romain Duda, Roy Ellen, James Fairhead, Álvaro Fernández-Llamazares, James Fraser, Sandrine Gallois, Chris Hebdon, Patricia Howard, Samuel Guindo, Sascha Huditz, Amy Leigh Johnson, Alder Keleman, J Stephen Lansing, Melissa Leach, Rosalinda Hidalgo Ledesma, Johannes Lehmann, Francis Michael Ludlow, Doyle McKey, Citlalli López Binnqüist, Paul Van Mele, Tom van Mourik, Lars Otto Naess, Florencia G Palis, Fortunata Panzo Panzo, Victoria Reyes García, Delphine Renard, Gede Sedana, Christopher Shepherd, Paul Sillitoe, Daniela Soleri, Dawit Solomon, Sidi Toure, Thérèse de Vet, Wayan Windia, Gérard Zoundji

        Indigenous Knowledge (IK) reviews cutting-edge research and links theory with practice to further our understanding of this important approach's contribution to natural resource management. It addresses IK's potential in solving issues such as coping with change, ensuring global food supply for a growing population, reversing environmental degradation and promoting sustainable practices. It is increasingly recognised that IK, which has featured centrally in resource management for millennia, should play a significant part in today's programmes that seek to increase land productivity and food security while ensuring environmental conservation. By drawing together strands of biocultural diversity research into natural resources management, this book: - Provides an overview of conceptual issues around IK and its contributions to sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation; - Addresses key themes via case studies from bioculturally diverse regions of the world; - Displays a wide range of methodologies and outlines a possible agenda to guide future work. An invaluable resource for researchers and postgraduate students in environmental science and natural resources management, this book is also an informative read for development practitioners and undergraduates in agriculture, forestry, geography, anthropology and environmental studies.

Duvall, Martin Farr, John Heeley, Andrew Holden, Stanislav Ivanov, Heather Jeffrey, Gabriele Manella, Chris Ryan, Asterio Savelli, Hongdi Shen, John E Tunbridge, David Weaver, Paul F Wilkinson

        This new book reviews all aspects of the phenomenon of mass tourism. It covers theoretical perspectives (including political economy, ethics, sustainability and environmentalism), the historical context, and the current challenges to domestic, intra-regional and international mass tourism. As tourism and tourist numbers continue to grow around the world, it becomes increasingly important that this subject is studied in depth and best practice applied in real-life situations. This book: - Is the first to address a range of theoretical issues relating to mass tourism; - Uses a wide selection of case studies to translate theory into practice, covering the historical rise and fall of UK seaside resorts, the increase in Chinese tourism, conflict between different mass tourism groups, destination transformation from mass to niche tourism, and specific problems facing cruise ships; - Is written by a range of international, established authors to give a global perspective on the subject. Finishing with a speculative chapter identifying potential future trends and challenges, this book forms an essential resource for all researchers and students within tourism studies. ; Section 1: Introduction1: Introduction: Mass Tourism in a Small WorldSection 2: Theoretical Approaches to Mass Tourism2: Mass Tourism Does Not Need Defending3: The Morality of Mass Tourism4: The Political Economy of Mass Tourism and its Contradictions5: A Theoretical Approach to Mass Tourism in Italy6: Sustainability and Mass Tourism: A Contradiction in Terms?7: Mass Tourism and the Environment: Issues and DilemmasSection 3: Historical Studies of Tourism Development8: The Dynamics of Tourism Development in Britain: The Profit Motive and that ‘Curious’ Alliance of Private Capital and the Local State9: From Holiday Camps to the All-inclusive: the ‘Butlinization’ of Tourism10: Decline Beside the Seaside: British Seaside Resorts and Declinism11: Mass Tourism and the US National Park Service System12: Transport and Tourism: The Perpetual LinkSection 4: Case Studies in Modern Mass Tourism13: Mass Tourism and China14: Mass Tourism in Thailand: The Chinese and Russians15: Mass Tourism in Bulgaria: The Force Awakens16: Mass Tourism in Mallorca: Examples from Calivià17: Tunisia: Mass Tourism in Crisis?18: From Blue to Grey? People and Work in Events and Conventions

        A Research Perspective

        by Hannah Theobald, Charles Arcodia, John Arthur, Parveen Yaqoob, Bruce German, Christopher Auld, Ronan Gormley, James D House, Paula Jauregi, Zuleika Beaven, Anne Pihlanto, Jo Lunn, Katalin Formádi, Bruce Mullan, Joe Goldblatt, Nigel Scollan, Russell Hoye, Kevin J Shingfield, Leo Jago, Chris Kemp, Jeong S Sim, Adele Ladkin, Judith Mair, Vivienne S McCabe, Roselyne N Okech. Edited by Caroline Rymer, Thomas Baum, Eddie Deaville, Margaret Deery, Clare Hanlon, Leonie Lockstone, Karen A Smith.

        The part of the tourism industry which covers events, conventions and meetings is a substantial part of the global economy and provides employment for a very large number of people worldwide. The breakdown of employees in this sector is complex - employees can be full-time, casual labour or part of a volunteer workforce, and events can be as diverse as the Olympic Games and a local meeting. This book examines the role of people who work in events, meetings and conventions by looking at the context in which they work, and presenting theories, perspectives underlying trends of employment in this sector. Leading authors present international examples to further understanding of the concepts involved in people management in tourism events. This book will be an important resource for students and researchers of leisure, tourism and events management.

        Power and the people

        A social history of central European politics, 1945–56

        by Eleonore Breuning, Jill Lewis, Gareth Pritchard

        This book covers various aspects of the social history of politics on both sides of the Iron Curtain in the period 1945 to 1956. The contributors come from a range of countries (Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and the United Kingdom) and comprise a mixture of established historians and younger scholars engaged in pioneering research. The individual chapters are organised into four sections dealing with workers, ethnic and linguistic minorities, youth, and women. In order to enhance the comparative character of the volume, the four chapters contained in each section consider the position of these social groups in, respectively, West Germany, East Germany, Austria, and either Czechoslovakia or Hungary. Major themes include the absence of popular revolutions in the aftermath of World War Two, the re-imposition of social control by post-war elites, the attempt to restore pre-war gender relations, and the failure of Communist parties to win popular support. The chosen time-frame saw most of the decisive developments which set the pattern for the remaining Cold War period and is therefore of key importance for any student of this topic. ;

        The mediated Arctic

        Poetics and politics of contemporary circumpolar geographies

        by Johannes Riquet

        The mediated Arctic analyses the multiple relations between geography and cultural production that have long shaped - and are currently transforming - the circumpolar world. It explores how twenty-first-century cultural practitioners imagine and poeticise various elements of Arctic geography, and in doing so negotiate pressing environmental, (geo)political, and social concerns. From the plasmatic force of ice in Disney's Frozen films to the spatial vocabulary of circumpolar Indigenous hip hop, it addresses Arctic geographical imaginaries in a wide range of media, including literature, cinema, comic books, music videos, and cartographic art. The book brings together a plurality of voices from within and outside the circumpolar North, both in terms of the works analysed and in its own collaborative scholarly practice. The book bridges Indigenous and Southern mediations of the Arctic and combines different epistemologies to do justice to these imaginaries in their diversity.

        Conquering nature in Spain and its empire, 1750–1850

        by Helen Cowie, Andrew Thompson, John M. MacKenzie

        This book examines the study of natural history in the Spanish empire in the years 1750-1850. During this period, Spain made strenuous efforts to survey, inventory and exploit the natural productions of her overseas possessions, orchestrating a serries of scientific expeditions and cultivating and displaying American fauna and flora in metropolitan gardens and museums. This book assesses the cultural significance of natural history, emphasising the figurative and utilitarian value with which eighteenth-century Spaniards invested natural objects, from globetrotting elephants to three-legged chickens. It considers how the creation, legitimisation and dissemination of scientific knowledge reflected broader questions of imperial power and national identity. This book will be of particular interest to scholars and students of Spanish and Latin American History, the History of Science and Imperial Culture

        History of the Chinese Communist Party's Mass Line Thought

        by LUO Pinghan

        This Book systematically explores the formation and development of the mass line thought of the Chinese Communist Party, and analyzes its mass viewpoint under different historical conditions, including: (1) Formation and theoretical generalization of the mass line thought. For the first time, the Communist Party of China realized the transformation of the revolutionary subject from the elite to the masses. (2) Continuations and setbacks of the mass line thought. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the general implementation of democratic centralism in national institutions and organizations, and the establishment of political consultation system and the system of people's congress fully reflect the application of the Party's mass line in the establishment of specific systems. (3) Restoration and innovation of the mass line thought. Since the Reform and Opening-up, the Party has restored the fine tradition of the mass line. DENG Xiaoping's theory of "People's Support", "People's Approval", "People's Delightfulness" and "People's Agreement", JIANG Zemin's "Three Represents", and HU Jintao's theory that "The government must function by the mandate of the people, empathize with the feelings of the people, and work for the well-being of the people" all reflect the innovation of the Party's mass line in the new century."
