        Ai Wan’s Daffodil Ball

        by Huang Beijia

After several years of conception and more than one year of writing, Huang Beijia, a famous children’s literature writer, has recently published her new dedication named 'Ai Wan’s Daffodil Ball' in Jiangsu Children Press. The story is set in China in the early 1980s. At that time, the country was like a sleeping giant who was about to wake up. It was easy for people to get lost in that restless, unstable society. This is the setting for the story of the eight-year-old Aiwan. She grew up quietly with her brothers and sisters in an ordinary family in the small town of Qingyang. The story of Aiwan's upbringing is the same as that of many other girls during that period. Her ordinary life style was peaceful and low-key, just like the daffodil in the conch pot, which would be satisfied even with just a little water, all the while sending out a gentle fragrance. Her philosophy of life was learnt from her own life experience in this family, instead of being taught by others. Hard and restrained as her childhood was, we could still imagine that once she grew up, she would discover the wings to fly out into this wide world, and her wealth of experiences would become her fortune, helping her to create a bright, amazing future.

        Also sprach GOLEM

Vom großen Vordenker und Kritiker der Künstlichen Intelligenz

by Stanisław Lem, Friedrich Griese, Franz Rottensteiner, Richard Popp, Irving T. Greve

The Death of Cecil the Lion Made Sense

        by Olena Stiazhkina

This is the first novel Olena Styazhkina wrote in Ukrainian, and the theme of embracing Ukrainian identity is central to the plot. It takes place in Donbas over the course of several years: the reader follows the journeys of characters who are, at first, held back by Soviet mentalities. As a result of war, they undergo important changes relating to their understanding of themselves and their country, like the dentist who becomes a military surgeon or the cosmetics saleswoman who becomes a sniper shooting instructor. The characters go through a whirlpool of historical events and are reborn as Ukrainians.

        Three tenches for Maria

        by Serhiy Osoka

Each novel by Serhiy Osoka is a small-big story of an ordinary man who would probably stay unnoticed on this Earth if not for the attentive master of words. Because he does not simply write but creates a three-dimensional picture of human life with a few strokes, it seems you can hear how reeds rustle, fish splash in the pond, apples fall, old doors creak, and how man sighing, muffled laughter, and sobs mix with the wind. And you can also feel the smells - sometimes thick and dense to dizziness, at times volatile and transparent, like a floral scent. Somewhere in this 3D format, you see a man with all his beautiful and ugly features, rough surfaces, and deep recesses of his troubled soul. The plots of these novels may seem minor or secondary, but they are only the key to the portal that leads you to the world of great literature.

A Healthy Pregnancy with Selected (Micro)Nutrients

        by Uwe Gröber

Adequate nutrition and a healthy lifestyle – before and during pregnancy - are of great importance for a trouble-free pregnancy, birth, and the subsequent development of the child. Since the nutritional status before the onset of pregnancy influences both fertility and the course of pregnancy, including complications, the birth and breastfeeding, close attention should be paid to a healthy diet and adequate supply of essential (micro)nutrients well in advance and not only at the family planning stage. Poor micronutrient status prior to conception is often carried over into pregnancy, and can significantly increase the risk of pregnancy complications and, for example, lead to the dreaded spina bifida in the child. This patient guide tells you what you need to know! Various micronutrients are described in detail. Special emphasis is placed on the latest study results concerning pregnancy and nutrition.

        Who Grows in the Garden

by Kateryna Mikhalitsyna (Author), Oksana Bula (Illustrator)

The nightingale has returned from distant Africa and is looking for a spot to build its nest. And there are so many trees and bushes in the garden to chose from! Which of them would make a good home for a bird? Maybe a sour cherry tree, or a sweet cherry tree... or perhaps even a cherry plum tree? And what about a plum, or a pear tree? Each tree tells its story to the nightingale, describing its own special traits. What emerges from the stories of the trees is the image of the old gardener, clever and kind, who treats the trees as living creatures, talks to them and cherishes them greatly, along with his family, still living in the nearby house, honoring the trees and collecting their fruit.     From 3 to 6 years,  2515 words Rightsholders: ivan.fedechko@starlev.com.ua

        England’s military heartland

Preparing for war on Salisbury Plain

by Vron Ware, Antonia Dawes, Mitra Pariyar, Alice Cree

A considered investigation of a long-standing army base's impact on the British countryside. What is it like to live next door to a British Army base? Beyond the barracks provides an eye-opening account of the sprawling military presence on Salisbury Plain, drawing on a wide range of voices from both sides of the divide. Targeted for expansion under government plans to reorganise the UK's global defence estate, the Salisbury 'super garrison' offers a unique opportunity to explore the impact of the military footprint in a particular place. But this is no ordinary environment: as well as being the world-famous site of Stonehenge, the grasslands of Salisbury Plain are home to rare plants and wildlife. How does the army take responsibility for conserving this unique landscape as it trains young men and women to use lethal weapons? Are its claims that its presence is a positive for the environment anything more than propaganda? Beyond the barracks investigates these questions against the backdrop of a historic landscape inscribed with the legacy of perpetual war.

        Lazy!

On the benefits of doing nothing

        by Bernd Imgrund

        — Against the mantra of always having to be doing something — A compact cultural history of laziness — Anecdotes and aphorisms In a world that is characterised by the idea of achievement, laziness is considered a mortal sin. This has a long tradition. "If anyone will not work, let him not eat," wrote Paul the Apostle. So laziness, we are led to believe, is considered punishable by death in the Bible. But there is more to laziness than the mortal sin of inertia. It also includes idleness and contemplation, which no one finds reprehensible. Laziness can even be sexy. Its most charming variant is nonchalance: nothing upsets me; I take things as they come. A very readable essay about the need for idleness in our stressful times.

        Bison Looks for a Nest

by Oksana Bula (Author), Oksana Bula (Illustrator)

Once upon a time a bison met a bear. Winter was coming and he asked the bear where he could get food since everything was covered with snow. The bear answered that he didn’t eat in the winter. Instead he usually went into a deep sleep. Every year at the same time the Tukonis, the magical forest inhabitants, would put him to sleep in a den and wake him up at springtime. The bison was amazed. He had never slept all though the winter and couldn’t even imagine that other animals did. How wonderful it would be to sleep in a cozy nest rather than roam around in the snow searching for food! The bison decided that the Tukonis should put him to bed as well.   From 3 to 6 years, 407 words Rightsholders: ivan.fedechko@starlev.com.ua
