When is the use of force for humanitarian purposes legitimate? The book examines this question through one of the most controversial examples of humanitarian intervention in the post Cold War period: the 1999 NATO intervention in Kosovo. Justifying Violence applies a critical theoretical approach to an interrogation of the communicative practices which underpin claims to legitimacy for the use of force by actors in international politics. Drawing on the theory of communicative ethics, the book develops an innovative conceptual framework which contributes a critical communicative dimension to the question of legitimacy that extends beyond the moral and legal approaches so often applied to the intervention in Kosovo. This child tells us that he is not happy with the head that he has. He thinks it is a wrong head. The parents, after listening to him, take him to a specialist, who agrees with the little one. A mysterious man dressed in black supplies him with heads in exchange for his own. The child tries several, until he finds the one he was looking for. These verses are inspired in the Latin American oral tradition and only an author and expert of the oral tradition such as Pilar Posada can write these verses with the tone of those that have passed by word of mouth for several generations. She manages to integrate verses from her own oral tradition (creates from what has already been created) and offer the reader something totally new. The illustrations by Juliana Salcedo, great Colombian illustrator, based in Spain, accompany the texts with delicacy and wisdom also favoring the play among and between children, and between children and adults.
This is a novel that appeals to the kids as well as teachers and parents. It depicts the school and home life of a primary school pupil Jin Ling, and tells of how this quick-witted, kind-hearted and upright girl, who is soon to graduate with probably a middling record, strives with great efforts, and even with some “contentions” to be a “good girl” in order to satisfy her parents and teachers. It successfully creates some believable characters such as Jin Ling, her classmates, and many parents and teachers. With its well developed artistic plot and fluent language, which reflect the characteristics of the time and the rich flavor of life, the novel is not only vivid and touching, but also gives much food for thought.
