View Rights PortalOur team continues to study Ukraine, the results of which we share with you. This book is a story of the Ukrainian land, told by the Ukrainian people and filmed by the Ukraїner team. It was not enough to travel around all regions of Ukraine just one time to get to know it. Therefore, during 2019-2021, we drove the second expedition circle and brought even more stories about our incredible country and its inhabitants. Like all Ukraїner materials, these are stories of real people and the places they take care of, with dialogues and without directing. Traveling around the country, we want to capture it for every Ukrainian and for the whole world. And with the beginning of the annexation war started by Russia, this book has another important goal: to show Ukraine as it was before February 24, to keep it in our memory so that after the victory it could be rebuilt, and made even better.
Who are we? This is the question that the Ukraїner team has been working on every day for over five years. We tell stories from different parts of Ukraine, and in this way we seek the answer. This book has grown out of a great desire to explore and tell about the people in Ukraine. First of all, it is about the indigenous peoples here, because since July 2021, in addition to Ukrainians, this list has officially included the Crimean Tatars, Krymchaks and Karaites. And also it is about a whole range of national minorities whose representatives appeared on our lands for one reason or another. After all, the history of each people living in the territory of Ukraine is a part of our common history, as ancient and rooted as the formation of the Crimean Tatar people in Crimea and nearby steppe of Prychornomoria, or as fresh as the newly Indian student community in Zakarpattia. With the story of the latter, in 2017 Ukraїner began a series of more than 30 multimedia stories about national minorities of Ukraine, fragments of which became the basis for this book. Most stories are accompanied by QR codes with links, which you can follow to watch the stories. We also set out to tell about the diversity of cultures and thereby answer the question: what are we? The deeper we researched the traditional holidays, cuisine, and symbols of each separate people, the more we found in common.
Over several years of expeditions, the Ukraїner team took thousands of photos of Ukraine from a drone. Many different screens have already seen our footage: from Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) to city buses in Warsaw. With the help of these images, we aim to share the beauty of Ukraine with the world. This photo book shows Ukraine from a bird's eye view. Fields, forests, coasts, snow-capped mountains, patterns of city streets – all these shots show amazing diversity and cause aesthetic awe. Despite the fact that enemy shells are still flying in the Ukrainian sky, we are already trying to make the whole world fall in love with it. The book is published only in English and is called “Ukraine from above”.
«Ukraïner. Ukrainian Insider» is the print edition of the ambitious digital media project Ukraïner (ukrainer.net) based on our 2016–2018 expedition throughout all the historic regions of Ukraine: from Sloboda Ukraine in the east to Podillia in the southwest, and Volyn in the northwest to Tavriia in the south. In this book we feature the most striking and memorable moments of our exploration as we intend to share with the world many unique places within Ukraine and the stories of the remarkable Ukrainians who live there. Evocative photography both showcases these stories and reveal Ukraine as authentic, surprising, and exciting country. Bogdan Logvinenko is the initiator of the project.
The book selects 300 works (groups) of painting, sculpture, grottoes, architecture, craft and other art works from the "13th Five-Year Plan" national key publications publishing planning project and the National Publishing Fund funded project "World Buddhist Art Atlas", closely related to auspicious themes in different periods and traditional Chinese cultural elements. Highlighting the development history of Chinese civilization and the radiation spread to neighboring countries and regions. Through appreciating the works of art, the manuscript analyzes their cultural connotation, expresses the auspicious vision of the ancient working people in health, reunion, peace, harvest, wealth and other aspects, reveals the far-reaching influence of Chinese culture, and has the function of art appreciation and cultural popularization.

What is public opinion? What does public opinion do with you? Does public opinion have a temper? This book examines the links between major contemporary public sector reforms and neoliberal thinking. The key contribution of the book is to enhance our understanding of contemporary neoliberalism as it plays out in the public administration and to provide a critical analysis of generally overlooked aspects of administrative power. The book examines the quest for accountability, credibility and evidence in the public sector. It asks whether this quest may be understood in terms of neoliberal thinking and, if so, how? The book makes the argument that while current administrative reforms are informed by several distinct political rationalities, they evolve above all around a particular form of neoliberalism: constructivist neoliberalism. The book analyses the dangers of the kinds of administrative power seeking to invoke the self-steering capacities of society and administration itself.
Zhijiang, in Hunan province, is the place where China and Japan negotiated for the affairs about Japan surrendered in the World War Ⅱ. It plays an important role in the history of world peace. Zhijiang focuses on peace culture and has held "China Zhijiang · International Peace Festival" for five times since 2003, which makes peace culture a calling card for Zhijiang to go global. Due to the influence of this festival and further research of peace culture in Zhijiang, more and more attention both at home and abroad has been paid to Zhijiang so that people hope to know more about Zhijiang in a more comprehensive and thorough way. As an instigator of debate and a defender of tradition, a man of letters and a popular hack, a writer of erotica and a spokesman for bishops, an urbane metropolitan and a celebrant of local custom, the various textual performances of Thomas Nashe have elicited, and continue to provoke, a range of contradictory reactions. Nashe's often incongruous authorial characteristics suggest that, as a 'King of Pages', he not only courted controversy but also deliberately cultivated a variety of public personae, acquiring a reputation more slippery than the herrings he celebrated in print. Collectively, the essays in this book illustrate how Nashe excelled at textual performance but his personae became a contested site as readers actively participated and engaged in the reception of Nashe's public image and his works.

This collection brings together studies of popular performance and politics across the nineteenth century, offering a fresh perspective from an archivally grounded research base. It works with the concept that politics is performative and performance is political. The book is organised into three parts in dialogue regarding specific approaches to popular performance and politics. Part I offers a series of conceptual studies using popular culture as an analytical category for social and political history. Part II explores the ways that performance represents and constructs contemporary ideologies of race, nation and empire. Part III investigates the performance techniques of specific politicians - including Robert Peel, Keir Hardie and Henry Hyndman - and analyses the performative elements of collective movements.

It does so by developing a theoretical approach focusing on the intersection of sites, agency, narratives, and events in memory-making. Drawing on rich empirical studies of mnemonic formations in Cyprus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rwanda, South Africa and Cambodia, the book speaks to a broad audience. The in-depth, cross-case analysis shows that inclusivity, pluralism, and dignity in memory politics are key to the construction of a just peace. This book is about power in welfare encounters. Present-day citizens are no longer the passive clients of the bureaucracy and welfare workers are no longer automatically the powerful party of the encounter. Instead, citizens are expected to engage in active, responsible and coproducing relationships with welfare workers. However, other factors impact these interactions; factors which often pull in different directions. Welfare encounters are thus influenced by bureaucratic principles and market values as well. Consequently, this book engages with both Weberian (bureaucracy) and Foucauldian (market values/NPM) studies when investigating the powerful welfare encounter. The book is targeted Academics, post-graduates, and undergraduates within sociology, anthropology and political science.
Air empire is a fresh study of civil aviation as a tool of late British imperialism. The first pioneering flights across the British empire in 1919-20 were flag-waving adventures that recreated an era of plucky British maritime exploration and conquest. Britain's development of international air routes and services was approved, organised and celebrated largely in London; there was some resistance in and beyond the subordinate colonies and dominions. Negotiating the financing and geopolitics of regular commercial air service delayed its inception until the 1930s. Technological, managerial and logistical problems also meant that Britain was slow into the air and slow in the air. Propaganda concealed underperformance and criticism. The study uses archival sources, biographies, industry magazines and newspapers to chronicle the disputed progress toward air empire. The rhetoric behind imperial air service offers a glimpse of late imperial hopes, fears, attitudes and style. Empire air service had emotional appeal and symbolic value, but disappointed in practice.
The pastor in print explores the phenomenon of early modern pastors who chose to become print authors, addressing ways authorship could enhance, limit or change clerical ministry and ways pastor-authors conceived of their work in parish and print. It identifies strategies through which pastor-authors established authorial identities, targeted different sorts of audiences and strategically selected genre and content as intentional parts of their clerical vocation. The first study to provide a book-length analysis of the phenomenon of early modern pastors writing for print, it uses a case study of prolific pastor-author Richard Bernard to offer a new lens through which to view religious change in this pivotal period. By bringing together questions of print, genre, religio-politics and theology, the book will interest scholars and postgraduate students in history, literature and theological studies, and its readability will appeal to undergraduates and non-specialists.
This book presents a new conceptual model for understanding the role of the media in the construction of public knowledge, belief and opinion in the context of a radically changed communications infrastructure. Drawing on a series of empirical studies conducted over nearly a decade, Happer deploys evidence of a 'disconnect' between neoliberal media and the public which is rooted in a disaffection with a mainstream political culture which has failed to deliver the societal outcomes promised. As people are pushed towards alternative digital sources, new communities of opinion are produced in ways which polarise publics and ultimately limit the potential for social change. Offering an innovative and urgently needed new sociological analysis, this book is required reading for an inter-disciplinary field of media, journalism, and politics/IR which has largely abandoned questions of media power and public opinion management, as well as policymakers, science communicators and journalists. Key points of the book: 1) public opinion formation and why people may come to different positions through the development of a new model 2) the societal outcomes produced when a widespread disconnect between journalism and public opinion emerges 3) the atomisation of opinion and its relations to newly constructed opinion communities (with consideration of the role of class) 4) the turn to digitally available alternatives which enable new, less visible power agents to exert control.
Civic identity and public space, focussing on Belfast, and bringing together the work of a historian and two social scientists, offers a new perspective on the sometimes lethal conflicts over parades, flags and other issues that continue to disrupt political life in Northern Ireland. It examines the emergence during the nineteenth century of the concept of public space and the development of new strategies for its regulation, the establishment, the new conditions created by the emergence in 1920 of a Northern Ireland state, of a near monopoly of public space enjoyed by Protestants and unionists, and the break down of that monopoly in more recent decades. Today policy makers and politicians struggle to devise a strategy for the management of public space in a divided city, while endeavouring to promote a new sense of civic identity that will transcend long-standing sectarian and political divisions.
