        The Boy Who Saw the Color of Air

        by Abdo Wazen

        In his first YA novel, cultural journalist and author Abdo Wazen writes about a blind teenager in Lebanon who finds strength and friendship among an unlikely group.   Growing up in a small Lebanese village, Bassim’s blindness limits his engagement with the materials taught in his schools. Despite his family’s love and support, his opportunities seem limited.   So at thirteen years old, Bassim leaves his village to join the Institute for the Blind in a Beirut suburb. There, he comes alive. He learns Braille and discovers talents he didn’t know he had. Bassim is empowered by his newfound abilities to read and write.   Thanks to his newly developed self-confidence, Bassim decides to take a risk and submit a short story to a competition sponsored by the Ministry of Education. After winning the competition, he is hired to work at the Institute for the Blind.   At the Institute, Bassim, a Sunni Muslim, forms a strong friendship with George, a Christian. Cooperation and collective support are central to the success of each student at the Institute, a principle that overcomes religious differences. In the book, the Institute comes to symbolize the positive changes that tolerance can bring to the country and society at large.   The Boy Who Saw the Color of Air is also a book about Lebanon and its treatment of people with disabilities. It offers insight into the vital role of strong family support in individual success, the internal functioning of institutions like the Institute, as well as the unique religious and cultural environment of Beirut.   Wazen’s lucid language and the linear structure he employs result in a coherent and easy-to-read narrative. The Boy Who Saw the Color of Air is an important contribution to a literature in which people with disabilities are underrepresented. In addition to offering a story of empowerment and friendship, this book also aims to educate readers about people with disabilities and shed light on the indispensable roles played by institutions like the Institute.

        Molière et Son Premier Tartuffe

        Genèse et évolution d'une pièce à scandale

        by Robert McBride

        Molière et son premier Tartuffe sheds light on one of the most enduring mysteries in world theatre: the nature, structure and purpose of the first and no longer extant version of his most controversial play, Le Tartuffe. The study provides a succinct overview of the problem and a close analysis of events leading up to the original performance at Versailles. A careful reading of Molière's own defence of this version situates its overriding inspiration in his wish to satirise specific religious groupings, whilst hoping vainly to avoid censure from the religious establishment of his day. There are three appendices: the first evaluates the hypotheses of a complete or incomplete play; the second analyses the claims that Molière took certain people as models for Tartuffe, and the final appendix seeks to reopen the question of Molière's stance towards religion. The conclusion is that Le Tartuffe should not be seen as inherently hostile to religion, but rather as constituting a plea for tolerance, charity and transparency in its practice, none of which runs counter to the spirit and tenets of historic Christianity. This will appeal to lecturers and students of French Studies and Theatre Studies. ;

        Max Frisch. Citoyen

        by Max Frisch, Matthias Gunten

        »Wir riefen Gastarbeiter, und es kamen Menschen.« Mit Sätzen wie diesem griff Max Frisch immer wieder in das öffentliche Leben der Schweiz ein. Als politischer Intellektueller war er auch in anderen Ländern ein gefragter Gesprächspartner: Er diskutierte mit Henry Kissinger über den Krieg in Vietnam, war 1977 in der Nacht, in der die »Landshut« gestürmt wurde, bei Helmut Schmidt in Bonn. Dem Citoyen, dem engagierten Bürger Max Frisch hat Matthias von Gunten sein Porträt gewidmet. Zu Wort kommt, neben Kissinger und Schmidt sowie Schriftstellerkollegen wie Christa Wolf, Günter Grass und Peter Bichsel, auch der Autor Max Frisch selbst – seine Tagebucheinträge und Reden werden gelesen von Reto Hänny. »Solche Stimmen fehlen heute in der Schweiz«, sagte von Gunten dazu der Neuen Zürcher Zeitung. Man möchte ergänzen: und anderswo.

        by Meggie Berns

She seems to have a problem that is really putting her in a bad mood. But now Feodora + Gino are curious to find out what they can do for the little bee. Eucational approach: What does the book Bibbi aim to express? Sometimes something you have to do might not be so bad after all! Each of the picture books has a basic theme that is dealt with. There is always a conclusion with which the story ends. This can then serve as a basis for further discussions on the topic. Picture book cinema This book by Meggie Berns has also been published as a movie in our picture book cinema. Picture Books about Emotion Management for Boys

        by Le Fan, Duan Zhang Qu Yi

        There is a pervading idea, both in the east and west, that "big boys don't cry". To reach some cultural ideal of a "real man", boys are too often pushed to be tough and stoic and suppress their emotions. The Picture Books about Emotion Management for Boys challenges this old tradition. Of course boys cry, and we should let them cry!   The series contains five books. I Want to Cry encourages boys to express their vulnerable feelings in appropriate ways. I Don't Want to Hit Back encourages boys to follow their hearts and stick up for themselves in the way they like. I am a Coward talks about self-acceptance. I Don't Want to be a Big Brother is for boys experiencing issues with new siblings. I Didn't Hear You talks about protecting boys' own little worlds.   All five stories came from author Le Fan's real experiences of raising two sons as a mother. While the books are certainly children's books, they could even be viewed as parent handbooks of sorts. The author has written their parents and other adults in little boys' eyes, and calls for parents and society to raise boys differently and understandingly so they can grow in positive, healthy ways.
