La horrible lengua alemana
by Mark Twain

by Amalia Van Gent
The dream of a less corrupt, democratic Armenia drove hundreds of thousands onto the streets across the country in the spring of 2018. This peaceful mass movement actually succeeded in driving the corrupt government out of office. But what has become of the great promise in the meantime? Which changes are sustainable and how does the Karabach Conflict affect social developments? This book is a highly topical encounter with modern Armenia, a valuable continuation of the author's first book (Den Ararat in front of her eyes - with Christina Leumann), but also an excitingly written examination of the history of this fascinating, but largely unknown country.

Modern Othodox Thinkers
From the Philokalia to the Present Day
by Andrew Louth
A lively and perceptive account of the lives, writings and enduring intellectual legacies of the great Orthodox theologians of the past 250 years. This book explores and explains the enduring influence of some of the world's greatest modern theologians. Starting with the influence of the Philokalia in nineteenth-century Russia, the book moves through the Slavophiles, Solov'ev, Florensky in Russia and then traces the story through the Christian intellectuals exiled from Stalin's Russia - Bulgakov, Berdyaev, Florovsky, Lossky, Lot-Borodine, Skobtsova - and a couple of theologians outside the Russian world: the Romanian Staniloae and the Serbian Popovich, both of whom studied in Paris. Andrew Louth then considers the contributions of the second generation Russians - Evdokimov, Meyendorff, Schmemann - and the theologians of Greece from the sixties onwards - Zizioulas, Yannaras, and others, as well as influential monks and spiritual elders, especially Fr Sophrony of the monastery in Essex and his mentor, St Silouan. The book concludes with an illuminating chapter on Metropolitan Kallistos and the theological vision of the Philokalia.

A Sensational Encounter with High Socialist China
by Paul G. PICKOWICZ
A Sensational Encounter with High Socialist China is a recollection of the historic visit of fourteen American students (and one Canadian) to China in 1971. The visit was one of the first approved for American scholars after the Chinese Communist Party came to power in 1949 and occurred prior to President Nixon’s famous trip (as well as that of a second group of scholars) in 1972. One of these students, Paul Pickowicz, kept a journal and photographically documented the trip. This book is a personal account of the events leading up to their visa approvals as well as those that occurred during the journey itself. The five senses are used to connect the reader to his experience and are placed in the context of a theatrical production. The images included have been selected from an archive at the University of California, San Diego, which digitized the author’s images as well as those of others in the Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars (CCAS) taken during both the 1971 and 1972 delegations.

Large Animal Orthopedics
An Illustrated Handbook on Amputations, Prosthetic Fittings and Rehabilitations
by Nayak, S.
The concept of amputation, prosthetic, orthotic fitting and orthopaedic rehabilitation on large animals is an innovative practice developed by the author. The author has developed several techniques of fitting of prosthetic and orthotic appliances for the large animals. The practical lessons and illustrations included in the book will be of very much of use for the students, teachers and researchers and practitioners in Veterinary Science in general and surgery in particular, covering details of surgical techniques in a brief manner with pictorial representation. The basic idea behind this book is to publish innovative methods and new affective techniques that are easy successful and cost effective. In orthopaedic treatment in large animals fitting of artificial limbs, prosthetic and orthotic appliances, amputation and rehabilitation appear to be very rare and complicated. Large numbers of hand drawings and photographs have been incorporated in order to visualize the surgical techniques for better understanding. Fabrication of modified Thomas Splint has been demonstrated step wise using illustrations. Use of conjoined U plate for better immobilization in case of lower limb fabrication in large animals is claimed as an innovative step. A sling has been fabricated for lifting of downed large animals for making them mobile to facilitate exercise of unused and paralyzed limbs using locally available materials to make it cost effective as well as availability in most rural interiors.

Grounded at Kai Tak
Chinese Aircraft Impounded in Hong Kong, 1949–1952
by Malcolm Merry
Set against the backdrop of regional and international post–Second World War tensions, Grounded at Kai Tak is the most comprehensive account of the complex legal struggle for ownership of 71 airplanes belonging to the two main Chinese airlines, which were stranded at Kai Tak airfield in Hong Kong at the end of the Chinese civil war. The resulting contest for possession of them took place in the courts and among politicians and diplomats on three continents. In the process, the struggle became entangled with the anti-communist policies of the United States in the emerging ‘Cold War’, British hopes for restoration of her pre-war commercial position in China, disagreements between nations about recognition of the new government in Peking, and the delicate balance that the colonial government of Hong Kong had to keep to preserve that colony’s interests. Merry tells the tale of this legal saga by weaving together archival documents and news reports of the day, revealing the international alignments that emerged from the aftermath of the wars and the colourful cast of actors that influenced the outcome of the dispute. This struggle would go on to become one of the leading public international law cases on the recognition of governments at the time.

The Minimum You Need to Know to Be an OpenVMS Application Developer
by Roland Hughes
For years now the question has been surfacing in the OpenVMS community "Where are the pimply faced kids?" The other situation which seems to continually occur is a developer of one language suddenly finding themselves having to modify or maintain an application written in a language completely foreign to them. This book was a year long effort to answer both of those questions. It also should help those to work on a good platform. Once the rudimentaries of logging in, symbols, logicals and the various editors are handled this book takes the reader on a journey of development using the most common tools encountered on the OpenVMS platform and one new tool making headway. A single sample application (a lottery tracking system) is developed using FMS and RMS indexed files in each of the covered languages. (BASIC, FORTRAN, COBOL and C/C++). The reader is exposed on how to use CDD, CMS and MMS with these languages as well. A CD-ROM is included which contains the source, MMS and command files developed through the course of the book. Once RMS has been covered with all of the languages the same application using MySQL with C and FMS is covered. This breaks readers into the use of relational databases if they are not currently familiar with the concept. Rounding out the technical portion of the book is the same application using RDB with FMS. While source code is provided for all of the language implementations only FORTRAN and COBOL are actually covered in the text. It is the hope of the author that this book will prove a useful reference on the desk of every OpenVMS developer. The inclusion of MySQL should benefit both those unfamiliar with relational technology and those platformveterans interested in playing with MySQL for the first time.
