        The Clockwork Testament or: Enderby's End

        By Anthony Burgess

        by Ákos Farkas, Anthony Burgess

        First published in 1974, this novel is a semi-autobiographical reflection on the author's experience of having been the subject of Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation of A Clockwork Orange in 1971. This is the end of Enderby, Anthony Burgess's finest comic creation. Dyspeptic and obese, this is the account of his last day as a visiting professor in New York, and his last day on Earth. The Irwell Edition of The Clockwork Testament will provide new information about the genesis of the novel, gleaned from a series of drafts and typescripts recently discovered in the archive of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation (IABF) in Manchester, as well as printing a deleted chapter for the first time in English.

        Journeyman

        An autobiography

        by Ewan Maccoll, Peggy Seeger, Peggy Seeger

        This new edition of Journeyman, Ewan MacColl's vivid and entertaining autobiography, has been re-edited from the original manuscript, and includes a new introduction by Peggy Seeger, for whom he wrote the unforgettable 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'. MacColl, a singer, songwriter, actor, playwright and broadcaster, begins this fascinating account with his working class Salford childhood, traces the founding and life of Theatre Workshop, one of Britain's most innovative theatre companies, then moves on to his work with folksingers, the Radio Ballads and his ascent into old age. Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger were among the main leaders of the UK folksong revival. Journeyman documents their struggle to secure the integrity of that revival as the popular media appropriated and re-created traditional music for commercial gain. An entertaining and thought-provoking slice of British history, it will appeal to those interested in the histories of folk music, theatre, radio, left-wing politics and the Manchester area. ;

        Anthony Asquith

        by Tom Ryall, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

        This is the first comprehensive critical study of Anthony Asquith. Ryall sets the director's work in the context of British cinema from the silent period to the 1960s, examining the artistic and cultural influences which shaped his films. Asquith's silent films were compared favourably to those of his eminent contemporary Alfred Hitchcock, but his career faltered during the 1930s. However, the success of Pygmalion (1938) and French Without Tears (1939), based on plays by George Bernard Shaw and Terence Rattigan, together with his significant contributions to wartime British cinema, re-established him as a leading British film maker. Asquith's post-war career includes several pictures in collaboration with Terence Rattigan, and the definitive adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest (1951), but his versatility is demonstrated in a number of modest genre films including The Woman in Question (1950), The Young Lovers (1954) and Orders to Kill (1958). ;

        A Vision of Battlements

        by Anthony Burgess

        by Andrew Biswell, Paul Wake

        A Vision of Battlements is the first novel by the writer and composer Anthony Burgess, who was born in Manchester in 1917. Set in Gibraltar during the Second World War, the book follows the fortunes of Richard Ennis, an army sergeant and incipient composer who dreams of composing great music and building a new cultural world after the end of the war. Following the example of his literary hero, James Joyce, Burgess takes the structure of his book from Virgil's Aeneid. The result is, like Joyce's Ulysses, a comic rewriting of a classical epic, whose critique of the Army and the postwar settlement is sharp and assured. The Irwell Edition is the first publication of Burgess's forgotten masterpiece since 1965. This new edition includes an introduction and notes by Andrew Biswell, author of a prize-winning biography of Anthony Burgess.

        Agnes Grey

        Roman

        by Anne Brontë, Elisabeth Arx

        Die Schwestern Charlotte, Emily und Anne Brontë gehören bis heute zu den meistgelesenen Autorinnen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Als Töchter eines englischen Pfarrers wuchsen sie in der Abgeschiedenheit eines abgelegenen Pfarrhauses in West Yorkshire auf, wo sie bis zu ihrem Lebensende blieben. Bereits als Kinder verfaßten die Schwestern gemeinsam mit ihrem Bruder Branwell (1817-1848) die Erzählungen aus Angria. Als der Bruder jedoch alkohol- und drogenkrank wurde, waren die Schwestern aufgrund des frühen Todes der Mutter und der mangelnden Unterstützung des Vaters auf sich alleine gestellt. Ihre Werke erschienen zeitlebens unter den männlichen Pseudonymen Currer Bell (Charlotte), Ellis Bell (Emily) und Acton Bell (Anne).    Anne Brontё (1820-1849) war die jüngste der drei Schwestern. Sie arbeitete wie ihre Schwester Charlotte als Gouvernante. Diese Erfahrungen flossen in ihre Werke Agnes Grey und Die Herrin von Wildfell Hall ein. Sie erlag mit 29 Jahren der Tuberkulose.

        Nutrition and Feeding Organic Cattle

        by Robert Blair

        Organic cattle farming is on the increase, with consumer demand for organic milk and meat growing yearly. Beginning with an overview of the aims and principles behind organic cattle production, this book presents extensive information about how to feed cattle so that the milk and meat produced meet organic standards, and provides a comprehensive summary of ruminant digestive processes and nutrition. Since the publication of the first edition, global consumers have increasingly become concerned with the sustainability of meat production. Here, Robert Blair considers the interrelationships of sustainable practices and profitability of organic herds, reviewing how to improve forage production and quality, and minimizing the need for supplementary feeding using off-farm ingredients. This new edition also covers: - Managing a recurrent shortage of organic feed ingredients, due to increased GM feed crop cultivation worldwide - Current findings on appropriate breeds and grazing systems for forage-based organic production - Diet-related health issues in organic herds and the effects of organic production on meat and milk quality. Required reading for animal science researchers, advisory personnel that service the organic milk and beef industries and students interested in organic milk and meat production, this book is also a useful resource for organic farming associations, veterinarians, and feed and food industry personnel.

        ABBA ABBA: By Anthony Burgess

        by Paul Howard, Andrew Biswell

        ABBA ABBA is one of Anthony Burgess's most original works, combining fiction, poetry and translation. A product of his time in Italy in the early 1970s, this delightfully unconventional book is part historical novel, part poetry collection, as well as a meditation on translation and the generating of literature by one of Britain's most inventive post-war authors. Set in Papal Rome in the winter of 1820-21, Part One recreates the consumptive John Keats's final months in the Eternal City and imagines his meeting the Roman dialect poet Giuseppe Gioachino Belli. Pitting Anglo-Italian cultures and sensibilities against each other, Burgess creates a context for his highly original versions of 71 sonnets by Belli, which feature in Part Two. This new edition includes extra material by Burgess, along with an introduction and notes by Paul Howard, Fellow in Italian Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge.

        Agroforestry for Soil Management

        by Edited by Anthony Young

        Agroforestry refers to land use systems in which trees or shrubs are grown in association with agricultural crops, or pastures and livestock. From its inception, it has contained a strong element of soil management. Well-designed and managed agroforestry systems have the potential to control run-off and erosion, maintain soil organic matter and physical properties, and promote nutrient cycling. By these means, agroforestry can make a major contribution to sustainable land use. The previous edition of this book, entitled Agroforestry for Soil Conservation (1989), was based on indirect evidence from agriculture, forestry and soil science. The present work provides a new synthesis, drawing on over 700 published sources dating largely from the 1990s. These include both results of field trials of agronomy systems, and research into the plant-soil processes which take place within them. Soil conservation in its narrower sense, the control of erosion, is treated alongside other equally important aspects of soil management, such as nutrient cycling. The new edition summarizes the present state of knowledge and indicates needs for research. It is essential reading for all concerned with agroforestry, whether as students, research scientists, or for practical purposes of development. It is also of interest to soil scientists, agronomists and foresters. Anthony Young was for nine years a Principal Scientist with the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF), Nairobi, Kenya. He was previously Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, from which he received the degree of Doctor of Science. He was a joint author of the FAO standard texts on land evaluation and land use planning. Besides these, his other books include Soil Survey and Land Evaluation (1981) and Land Resources: Now and for the Future (1998). He is now Honorary Research Fellow in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia.

        Wittgenstein

        Aus dem Englischen von Hermann Vetter

        by Anthony Kenny, Hermann Vetter

        Anthony Kenny studierte in Rom und Oxford und lehrte seitdem an verschiedenen Universitäten (u.a. an der University of Chicago und der Stanford University). Veröffentlichungen: Action, Emotion and Will (1963), The Five Ways (1969) und Descartes (1968). Zur Zeit arbeitet er an einer Übersetzung von Wittgensteins nachgelassener Philosophischer Grammatik. Kennys Einführung in die Philosophie Ludwig Wittgensteins wendet sich weniger an die etablierte akademische Philosophie als vielmehr an ein breiteres Publikum von »Laien«, das an allgemeinen sprachphilosophischen Themen interessiert ist. Kenny ist es gelungen, so weit in die moderne Logik einzuführen - und zwar unter weitgehendem Verzicht auf mathematische Symbolik -, daß sich der Leser ohne größere Schwierigkeiten auf diesem Gebiet mit Wittgensteins Werken beschäftigen kann. Das vorliegende Buch ist eines der ersten, das das umfangreiche Œuvre Wittgensteins als ganzes darstellt; sein Wert liegt nicht zuletzt darin, daß es sich ausführlich mit den erst kürzlich publizierten Werken aus Wittgensteins mittlerer Zeit befaßt: mit den Philosophischen Bemerkungen und der Philosophischen Grammatik.
