Adomeit, über den man in seinem Wetterauer Provinznest mehr Mutmaßungen erzählt als Tatsachen, wird zu Grabe getragen. Über sein Vermögen kursieren wilde Gerüchte, und Skandalöses munkelt man auch über seine Beziehung zur Schwester, die er vor vielen Jahren wegen eines unehelichen Kindes aus dem Haus gejagt haben soll. Adomeit hat seinen Tod so inszeniert, daß die Beerdigung ausgerechnet am Pfingstsonntag stattfindet. Auch für die Testamentseröffnung ist vom Verstorbenen ein unpassender Termin festgelegt worden: der Pfingstdienstag, an dem man im Frankfurter Raum traditionell im Wald zusammensitzt und Wäldchestag feiert. Andreas Maier läßt seinen Erzähler berichten, was er bei den Gesprächen zwischen den Einheimischen und Fremden aufschnappt, was ihm gebeichtet oder vertraulich als todsicher wahr hintertragen wird. So entsteht eine tollkühn erzählte Geschichte über einen gebeutelten Kerl, der der Welt auf beeindruckende Weise eine Nase dreht.

Literatur ist ein Mittel, um ein Ich sichtbar zu machen. Das ist ein Kernsatz aus Maiers Poetik. So, wie man sein eigenes Gesicht nicht ohne Hilfsmittel sehen kann, kann auch ein anderes Ich nur mit einem Hilfsmittel sichtbar gemacht werden. »Die Bücher waren eigentlich die Menschen«, so beschreibt Maier seine erste Begegnung mit Literatur. In einer Selbstanalyse zwischen Psychologie und Religion forscht der Autor seinem Entwicklungsgang hinterher, von der Verweigerung des Kindergartens, von den Schwierigkeiten des Suchens nach einer Form bis hin zu der Gewißheit, daß sich alles von selbst einstellt, wenn man aufhört, danach zu suchen. Maiers Poetik ist auch eine Polemik gegen das Interessante in der Literatur. Literatur, sagt er, stellt immer die einfachsten Fragen.

Wenn Hans Maier beschreibt, wie aus Cäcilia, der jungen Märtyrerin aus der Zeit Marc Aurels, durch einen Übersetzungsfehler die Patronin der Kirchenmusik wurde und wie Goethe, Herder, Wackenroder und Kleist sie »unter die Deutschen« brachten, ersteht ein Stück erlebter Musik-, Literatur-, Kunst- und Theatergeschichte. Bachs einsame Gestalt wird ebenso sichtbar wie Händels internationale Wirkung. Und Mozart, in seinen Briefen betrachtet, wird als Persönlichkeit »durchsichtig bis ins Innerste hinein: kein selbstmächtiger Gestalter, sondern ein Mensch mit seinem Auf und Ab, ganz heutig und gegenwärtig, verletzlich und lebendig, als sei er unser Zeitgenosse«. Die neu in diese Ausgabe aufgenommenen Beiträge reflektieren vor allem Phänomene der Musik- und Kulturgeschichte in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts – bis hin zu aktuellen Fragen. Sie zeigen, daß Kultur und Bildung in der Gegenwart ohne demokratische Struk- turen, ohne eine teilnehmende – mithörende – öffentlichkeit nicht gedeihen können. Die enge Verbindung von Musik und Literatur, die spezifische Nähe des Musikalischen und des Poetischen, wie sie bei den Romantikern, in der Philosophie Schopenhauers und Nietzsches oder im Werk Thomas Manns sichtbar wird, ist Gegenstand der hier in erweiterter Neuausgabe gesammelten Schriften. Hans Maier spricht in ihnen als exzellenter Kenner der Musik- und Literaturgeschichte, nicht zuletzt aber auch als ausübender Organist.

Seit seinem Debüterfolg mit dem Roman Wäldchestag im Jahr 2000 ist Andreas Maier häufig unterwegs, um aus seinen Romanen zu lesen. Nur daß er in den letzten ein, zwei Jahren meist, wenn er eingeladen war, auch immer wieder schon aus dem kommenden Onkel J. las. Jedesmal hatte er damit das Publikum im Handumdrehen auf seiner Seite. Umstandslos fand man sich angeschlossen an Maiers Welt aus Wetterau, Familie, Fußball, Apfelwein, aus Thomas Bernhard und dem Evangelium nach Matthäus, aus Ängsten, Kneipenfreuden und -nöten, eingepackt in absurde Vorkommnisse und komische Erlebnisse. Jede Kolumne beginnt mit einem »Neulich«-Satz, die erste so: »Neulich war ich in Berlin. Das wird jetzt niemand weiter ungewöhnlich finden, aber ich bin Hesse, und mir ging in Berlin ein Wunsch in Erfüllung.« Dennoch handelt es sich um alles andere als ein Kolumnenbuch. Vielmehr nimmt Onkel J. – im Übergang von den ersten vier Romanen zu Maiers Projekt »Ortsumgehung« – eine zentrale Stelle ein. »Alles gehört zusammen, und für alles ist das Kolumnenbuch der Kern.«
