View Rights PortalWhat does it mean to be called an industrial designer? This book traces the remarkable rise of this professional identity in historical perspective from a position of anonymity in the early twentieth century, to mid-century professionalisation, to decline and disintegration by 1980. Drawing on new, extensive, original archival research, it uncovers the history of a profession in a state of re-invention, 1930-1980 in Britain and the United States. The book tests assumptions about the relationship between the professions in the two countries, bringing them into comparative historical perspective for the first time. The gendered dynamics of professionalisation and their interaction with the representation of the heroic male designer are interrogated and critically examined. Building on new gender perspectives to the history of the industrial design profession, the book calls for a re-examination of the limits and boundaries of what constitutes professional identity and work.

This book analyses and examines the origins, names, categories, materials, styles, production techniques, wearing styles and decorative patterns of jewelry, as well as the corresponding rules and regulations and other cultural information attached to them, through a combination of literature, aesthetic appreciation and cultural interpretation, and explains the close relationship between dress and people in traditional Chinese culture: jewelry is close to people and is an important symbol of status, skills and so on. The book fills a gap in the study of ancient Chinese jewelry and is of innovative and cumulative cultural value. It was nominated for the 5th China Publishing Government Award.
How did ordinary men and women dress in early modern Europe? What fabrics and garments formed the essential elements of fashion for artisans and shopkeepers? Did they rely on affordable alternatives to the silks, jewellery, and decorations favoured by the wealthy elite? Or did those with modest means find innovative ways to express their fashion sense? This book provides new perspectives on early modern clothing and fashion history byinvestigating the consumption and meaning of fashionable clothing and accessories among the 'popular' classes. Through a close examination of the materials, craftsmanship and cultural significance of fashion items owned by and available to a broad group of consumers, it challenges conventional assumptions that the everyday dress of ordinary families was limited to a narrow selection of garments made of coarse textiles, often produced at home and resistant to change.

Challenging standard economic models, this book shows how farmers tend to use cognitive shortcuts in their decision-making and how their professional pride frequently outweighs profit considerations. This indicates that environmental regulation based on economic incentives may not be as effective as economic theorists and ex ante policy analysts maintain. Rather than assuming that regulations respond to incentive-based policies, this book examines the ways in which they do. Bounded rationality in decision-making has typically been studied in a laboratory setting, but this book uses original empirical research to demonstrate how bounded rationality plays out in the real world, examining the responses of Danish farmers to fertiliser regulation and their decision-making processes. The book will be of interest to a broad range of scholars within the fields of public policy, public administration, political science, behavioural economics and sociology. ;

This book is about power in welfare encounters. Present-day citizens are no longer the passive clients of the bureaucracy and welfare workers are no longer automatically the powerful party of the encounter. Instead, citizens are expected to engage in active, responsible and coproducing relationships with welfare workers. However, other factors impact these interactions; factors which often pull in different directions. Welfare encounters are thus influenced by bureaucratic principles and market values as well. Consequently, this book engages with both Weberian (bureaucracy) and Foucauldian (market values/NPM) studies when investigating the powerful welfare encounter. The book is targeted Academics, post-graduates, and undergraduates within sociology, anthropology and political science.

In veterinary practice, the interface between veterinarians, veterinary nurses or technicians, and paraprofessional team members is crucial. It influences patient care, the incidence of medical errors, client satisfaction, the success of the veterinary practice and revenue generation. Ensuring a coherent approach to the maintenance of the animal health and wellbeing is of paramount importance, yet challenges such as interprofessional prejudice, contrasting motivations, and a lack of recognition, respect, empowerment or trust, can prevent best practice. Nutrition is one of the most important considerations in the maintenance of health, and plays a critical role in disease management, patient recovery and hospital outcome. Owners are increasingly aware of nutrition's role in optimising pet health, yet considerable misinformation can make this one of the most difficult aspects of pet ownership. Playing a central role as a source of expert information, the veterinary healthcare team must rise to the challenge of optimising pet nutrition. This book: - Provides evidence-based theory in an accessible and practical way to help veterinary healthcare teams implement interprofessional approaches to nutritional care and support; - Demonstrates how robust interprofessional practice and teamwork help to overcome challenges; - Emphasises collaborative working across the healthcare team. With effective interprofessional communication and collaboration considered a key factor in the successful implementation of nutritional assessment, forming a positive team environment founded on respect, trust and mutual support helps to overcome challenges and provide the best outcome for both pets and their owners.
