        East German intelligence and Ireland, 1949–90

        Espionage, terrorism and diplomacy

        by Jerome de Wiel

        This book is an in-depth examination of the relations between Ireland and the former East Germany between the end of the Second World War and the fall of the Berlin Wall. It explores political, diplomatic, economic, media and cultural issues. The long and tortuous process of establishing diplomatic relations is unique in the annals of diplomatic history. Central in this study are the activities of the Stasi. They show how and where East German intelligence obtained information on Ireland and Northern Ireland and also what kind of information was gathered. A particularly interesting aspect of the book is the monitoring of the activities of the Irish Republican Army and the Irish National Liberation Army and their campaigns against the British army in West Germany. The Stasi had infiltrated West German security services and knew about Irish suspects and their contacts with West German terrorist groups. East German Intelligence and Ireland, 1949-90 makes an original contribution to diplomatic, intelligence, terrorist and Cold War studies. ;

        Allein unter Briten

        Eine Entdeckungsreise

        by Tuvia Tenenbom, Isi Tenenbom, Karen Witthuhn

        Als Dramatiker und Gründer des Jewish Theater of New York wusste Tuvia Tenebom schon immer gutes Theater zu schätzen. Und wo kommen die besten Stücke zur Aufführung? In Großbritannien natürlich! Grund genug also, der Insel mal wieder einen Besuch abzustatten, zumal in einer Zeit, in der das große Brexit-Schauspiel über die Bühne geht. Ist es eine Komödie? Ist es eine Tragödie? Oder schlicht absurdes Theater?, wollte er von den Briten wissen. Das war zumindest der Plan. Aber: Der Mensch denkt, und Gott lacht, wie es so schön heißt. Denn seine Reise – die ihn über viele Monate durch das Vereinigte Königreich führte und während der er in Winston Churchills Zimmer ein Nickerchen machte, mit Jeremy Corbyn Katz und Maus spielte, mit Nigel Farage verbotenen Tabak rauchte, ein Monster verspeiste und einem Geist nachstellte – gestaltete sich ganz anders als angenommen. Die meisten Inselbewohner wollten nämlich mit ihm nur bedingt über den Brexit sprechen, dafür redeten sie bereitwillig über andere Themen – Themen, die ihnen am Herzen lagen, wie der allgegenwärtige Antisemitismus. Die Gespräche, die Tuvia Tenenbom mit Lords und Ladies führte, mit Politprofis und Pub-Philosophen, Wohlhabenden und Habenichtsen, Geistesgrößen und Geistlichen, mit Gangstern und Beauty Queens, mit Antisemiten und Palästina-Romantikern u.v.m., zeichnen nicht nur ein erhellendes Stimmungsbild der englischen Gesellschaft, sondern zeigen auch, dass sie zutiefst gespalten ist und erbittert um ihre Identität und ihre Zukunft kämpft.

        Italian graphic design

        Culture and practice in Milan, 1930s-60s

        by Chiara Barbieri

        Italian graphic design offers a new perspective on the subject by exploring the emergence and articulation of graphic design practice, from the interwar period through to the appearance of an international graphic design discourse in the 1960s. The book asks how graphic designers learned their trade and investigates the ways in which they organised and made their practice visible while negotiating their collective identity with neighbouring practices such as typography, advertising and industrial design. Attention is drawn to everyday design practice, educational issues, mediating channels, networks, design exchange, organisational strategies and discourses on modernism. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources and placing an emphasis on visual analysis, this book provides a model for a contextualised graphic design history as an integral part of the history of design and visual culture.

        Intelligence, security and the Attlee governments, 1945–51

        An uneasy relationship?

        by Daniel W. B. Lomas

        Drawing on recently released documents and private papers, this is the first book-length study to examine the intimate relationship between the Attlee government and Britain's intelligence and security services at the start of the Cold War. Often praised for the formation of the modern-day 'welfare state', Attlee's government also played a significant, if little understood, role in combating communism at home and overseas, often in the face of vocal, sustained opposition from its own backbenches. This book tells the story of Attlee's Cold War. From Whitehall vetting to secret operations in Eastern Europe and the fallout of Soviet atomic espionage on both sides of the Atlantic, it provides a fresh interpretation of the Attlee government, making it essential reading for anyone interested in the Labour Party, intelligence, security and Britain's foreign and defence policy at the start of the Cold War.
