Canongate is an independent publisher: since 1973 we’ve worked to unearth and amplify the most vital, exciting voices we can find, wherever they come from, and we’ve published all kinds of books – thoughtful, upsetting, gripping, beatific, vulgar, chaste, unrepentant, life-changing . . . Along the way there have been landmarks of fiction – including Alasdair Gray’s masterpiece Lanark, and Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, the best-ever-selling Booker winner – and non-fiction too. We’ve published an American president and a Guantanamo detainee; we’ve campaigned for causes we believe in and fought court cases to get our authors heard. And twice we’ve won Publisher of the Year. We’re still fiercely independent, and we’re as committed to unorthodox and innovative publishing as ever. Cancer nutrition and dietary guidance

China Chronic Disease Nutrition and Dietary Guidance Series

        by Li Zengning

The audio-visual products and series of books of "Nutrition and Dietary Guidance for Chronic Diseases in China" were compiled by the Nutrition and Metabolism Management Branch of the China Association for the Promotion of International Health Care and Nutrition and nine major hospitals. This book describes the relationship between various foods and tumors, and how to eat for tumor patients. Recent studies have proved that environmental factors may be an important factor in the incidence of tumors. Among them, eating habits, insufficient nutrient intake, excessive intake or imbalance between nutrients are all important aspects. The tumors affected by the above factors mainly include esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer and lung cancer. The pollutants in the diet, such as aflatoxin, aggravate the lack and imbalance of certain nutrients, thereby enhancing the carcinogenic effect. Nutrient intake is directly related to tumor occurrence, development, treatment effect, quality of life and survival period.

Sexually Transmitted Infections and AIDS in the Tropics

by Edited by Om P Arya, Charles A Hart

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) are a major public health problem both in their own right and because of their link with HIV infection. This has elevated their control to an absolute priority throughout the world. In developing countries, which account for approximately 75% of the easily curable STI, as estimated by the WHO, and where sexually transmitted HIV infection has reached epidemic proportions, the need is most acute. Here AIDS is claiming hundreds of thousands of lives and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. In addition, because of inadequate resources, the sequelae of STI (e.g. infertility and some cancers) contribute greatly to ill-health in the tropics. This book written by acknowledged experts working or with experience in tropical countries, gives clear, concise and up to date knowledge and understanding on all aspects of Sexually Transmitted Infections. It should be useful for all those involved in the appropriate management and control of STI in various settings, ranging from peripheral and rural and urban health care centres to large hospitals. It will also be invaluable for students of tropical medicine, medical microbiology and genito-urinary medicine.

        The new pornographies

Explicit sex in recent French fiction and film

        by Victoria Best, Martin Crowley

The turn of the twenty-first century has witnessed the striking advance of pornography into the Western cultural mainstream. Symptomatic of this development has been the use by writers, artists, and film-makers of the imagery and aesthetics of pornography, in works which have, often on this basis, achieved considerable international success. Amongst these artists are a number of French authors and directors - such as Michel Houellebecq, Catherine Breillat, Virginie Despentes, or Catherine Millet - whose work has often been dismissed as trashy or exploitative, but whose use of pornographic material may in fact be indicative of important contemporary concerns. In this, the first study of this significant trend, the authors explore how the reference to pornography encodes diverse political, cultural, and existential questions, including relations between the sexes, the collapse of avant-garde politics, gay sexualities in the time of AIDS, the anti-feminist backlash, the relation to the body and illness, the place of fantasy, and the sexualisation of children. It will be of interest to undergraduates, graduates, and researchers in the fields of French culture, gender, film and media studies.

        Aai and I

by Mamta Nainy and Sanket Pethkar

Aadya looks just like her mother (Aai)—same little nose, same delicate ears, same big eyes, and identical thick, long hair. But one day, Aai goes away to a big hospital with a promise to return before Aadya learns her next Math lesson. The long-awaited return shocks Aadya because now her mother looks completely unlike her. She wonders if Aai will ever greet her with her usual, cheery, ‘Hello! Mini-me.’ Or will Aadya have to take matters into her own hands just to hear that again? With lyrical prose and a tender touch, Aai and I is an empowering story of the bond between a mother and a daughter, and of the little one finding her own identity as she finds herself no longer 'looking' the same as her mother. Mamta Nainy captures with elan Aadya’s innocence, impatience, and dilemma, and Sanket Pethkar’s vibrant, gorgeous artwork brings to life a typical Indian household in the state of Maharashtra.
