Description
Countless young women around the world feel badly about their bodies and wish they were thinner. Millions of them develop eating disorders in their quest to lose “just 5 more pounds.” Delve into the mindset of someone in the throws of bulimia who holds nothing back. Experience her ups and downs, triumphs and setbacks, all mirroring the experiences of those who struggle with this illness.
Lori Henry went through the roller coaster ride of bulimia from age 12 until she graduated from high school. This collection of poetry was written during that time and in the years of recovery that followed.
Silent Screams was written by a teenager overcome with depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Her only way to express herself was through poetry and the poems in this book are a raw and powerful example of what it feels like to be young and in pain. The author has spoken about the book and her experience with bulimia in classrooms, youth groups, girls-only groups, dance conventions, libraries and at special events in order to encourage those struggling to seek help and begin recovery.
Book Details: This is a book of poetry for young adults. The target market is teenagers who are struggling with an eating disorder (in particular, bulimia), but also anorexia, compulsive overeating, and EDNOS (eating disorders not otherwise specified). Author Biography
Lori Henry is a Writer and Anthropologist of Dance based in North Vancouver, Canada. She struggled with bulimia when she was a teenager and spent many years in recovery thanks to the help of doctors, nutritionists, psychologists, counsellors, and her supportive family. She has fully recovered from bulimia and now lives free of an eating disorder.
The poems in this book were written in journals the author kept throughout her entire struggle. She wrote late at night when she couldn’t sleep, at school where she could barely pretend that she was okay, and at any private moment when she needed to let out her painful emotions and didn’t know any other way to do that. The book has sold over 500 copies in North America and has been used in junior high school classrooms to talk about issues such as body image, peer pressure, the dangers of dieting, and eating disorders.
