Mindfulness and Character Strengths - A Practical Guide to Flourishing

      by Ryan M. Niemiec

At the core of this hands-on resource for psychologists and other practitioners, including educators, coaches, and consultants, is Mindfulness-Based Strengths Practice (MBSP), the first structured program to combine mindfulness with the character strengths laid out in the VIA Institute's classification developed by Drs. Martin E. P. Seligman and Christopher Peterson. This 8-session program systematically boosts awareness and application of character strengths. The first section of the book consists of a detailed primer on mindfulness and character strengths while the second part goes into more detail about the integration of mindfulness and character strengths. The third section then leads readers step-by-step through each of the 8 MBSP sessions, including details of session structure and content, suggested homework, 30 practical handouts, as well as inspiring quotes and stories and useful practitioner tips. An additional chapter discusses the adaption of MBSP to different settings and populations (e.g., business, education, individuals, couples). The mindfulness and character strengths meditations on the accompanying CD support growth and development. Target Group: Psychologists, consultants, therapists and counselors, and all those interested in mindfulness, positive psychology, and improving life.

Theory and Clinical Practice of Modern Acupuncture and Moxibustion (in Chinese and English)

      by Chen Shaozong

For decades, Prof. Chen Shaozong has been dedicating to the research on the modern acupuncture and moxibustion system that is different from the traditional paradigm. As early as 1990, he published Theory and Clinical Application of Modern Acupuncture and Moxibustion. The book is the prototype of the modern acupuncture and moxibustion system, though it contains merely 100,000 Chinese characters. 21 years later in 2011, Prof. Chen Shaozong published Modern Acupuncture and Moxibustion that contains nearly 1 million Chinese characters with more informative content and a more comprehensive theoretical system. At the same time, as acupuncture and moxibustion grows into a more international discipline, the European and American community of acupuncture and combustion is going beyond the study of traditional acupuncture and moxibustion to start exploring into the acupuncture and moxibustion system in the context of modern science and technology. In recent years, they have gradually developed "western acupuncture and moxibustion" represented by "dry needling". As a response to the huge challenges brought by the evolution of western acupuncture and moxibustion, we published the six-volume Modern Acupuncture and Moxibustion by Prof. Chen Shaozong in 2018. Containing more than 3 million Chinese characters, this book features richer content and a further improved theoretical system. A few foreign universities have expressed their hope to have a compact edition of Modern Acupuncture and Moxibustion in Chinese and English languages based on the original edition so that they can use it as a textbook in teaching. This is how this Theory and Clinical Practice of Modern Acupuncture and Moxibustion (in Chinese and English) comes into being. It is believed that the publication of this book not only benefits the international exchange and communication on acupuncture and moxibustion, but also produces positive impact on the orientation of the discipline.

      by Alexander Ghanem

Doctors fnd themselves caught between the growing demands of having to learn more and more plus physical and mental stress, and the needs of a fulflling private life. Previously, there was no selfhelp guide focused on how to effectively improve the wellbeing of physicians (and patients). Previously, there was no selfhelp guide focused on how to effectively improve the wellbeing of physicians (and patients). Over the course of their careers, physicians often lose momentum, become exhausted and subsequently lack meaning in their life. This can even culminate in burnout. To prevent this, it is important to continually refocus, adapting your goals to circumstances. With this in mind, time management for physicians becomes more than just normal planning.

Talking about Health and Illness in Simple Terms

Medical Information Sheets in Plain Language

by Tanja Sappok, Reinhard Burtscher, Anja Grimmer

People with intellectual disabilities are signifcantly more likely to suffer from mental and physical disorders than the general population. For this very reason, good healthpromoting and medical care is especially important. Communication diffculties with patients and specialist staff make the necessary examinations and treatments more diffcult and can result in critical situations that are avoidable. If patients can be provided with explanations that are in line with their capabilities, then the level of anxiety and stress is reduced for all concerned. The treatment success rate increases. This largeformat book includes materials that explain about illnesses, examination and treatment methods in language that is easy to understand. The materials can help medical, treatment and educational personnel with their everyday work. They promote dialogue with relatives and people with learning diffculties, contribute to informed decisionmaking and strengthen patient rights.

      In the Dementia Maze

      A Graphic Novel

      by Albin Zauner

Is it possible to tell in drawings how people with dementia experience, cope with, or fail in their everyday lives? The art therapist Albin Zauner has accomplished this feat. The picture story comprises 84 drawings and is one of the frst graphic novels on the subject of dementia. The focus is not on the medicalpathologizing view of the disease pattern or course, but on the protagonist’s inner world of experience. The existential effects, the loss of spatial and temporal orientation, the memory lapses and the breakdown of speech, permeate the old man’s world of experience in symbolic image sequences.

      Fasciolosis

      by John Pius Dalton

Fasciolosis is a major global infection of livestock causing both huge losses to the agricultural community and affecting human health as a food-borne disease. Fully updated throughout, this new edition continues to cover the life cycle, biology, and development of the parasite; clinical pathology, immunology, diagnosis and vaccine development; and emergence, cause and mechanisms of drug resistance. It reviews the temperate liver fluke Fasciola hepatica, together with molecular, biochemical, control, and epidemiologial aspects of the tropical liver fluke F. gigantica. Many fundamental advances have taken place in the last two decades, but of particular importance has been the mapping of the draft genome of Fasciola. In addition, comprehensive advances in transcriptomics, proteomics and glycomics have been made, and the book therefore pays particular attention to these developments with the addition of brand-new chapters. Also covering the impact these parasites have had on the global human population, their distribution and their ecology, this book provides a comprehensive and accessible resource for scientists, researchers and students of medical and veterinary parasitology.
