I was drawn to this book as I'm a great believer that we humans are far more motivated by animal instincts than we like to think, but had not considered the potential applications to business. The book surprised me on two levels. Firstly, that it doesn't discuss how we currently use animal behaviour in business and secondly that it is not - as I had half-anticipated - about how to harness your inner lion to rule the other animals. It is practically the opposite on both scores! The books deals with the animal behaviours that we do not use in business or in life generally, that we should be observing and imitating; including unspoken communication, sensible use of energy and reactions to stress, disconnection versus collaboration, courage, disengagement and commitment. Tomkins draws on many examples from the animal kingdom to illustrate her points; horses, hares, ducks, wolves, bees, hedgehogs and even humming birds are among the animal line-up.
I had intended to read N-STINCTIVE over a quiet week but actually read it in one sitting. Not only is it fascinating, it's very easy-to-read; being peppered with interesting anecdotes, case studies and insightful quotes (my favourite "How often are you dancing the waggle dance?") I suspect I will return to this book again and again and look forward to seeing how I can apply the principals to my working life.
Author Biography
Rosie Tomkins is the creator of the concept of Natural Intelligence (NQ) and she is the founder of Natural Capital Consultants Limited in the United Kingdom. She is a dedicated and passionate business entrepreneur, management consultant and sportswoman. She started her own lifestyle company more than thirty years ago, which she successfully led as managing director for more than ten years. Her first business offered adventure, sporting breaks and specialist holidays to high worth individuals and corporate clients. When she wanted to sell her business, Rosie researched and proactively targeted likely buyers, with the positive outcome of negotiating the sale of her business to one of the United Kingdom's fastest moving and dynamic PLCs. She was subsequently invited to join the board of directors and launched an innovative range of products nationwide to more than 120,000 members across forty-two health clubs. Rosie is currently building her Natural Intelligence brand and is about to launch a new marketing campaign in both the UK and USA to enhance her brand and pave the way for the publication of her book to make an impact in the world and a greater contribution to our future.
