        Arnulf. Die Axt der Hessen

        by Focken, Robert

It is the time of Charlemagne. When pagan Saxon tribes invaded Hesse led by the legendary Widukind, Charles gathered a giant army at the Main. Arnulf, a destitute man, is forced into service within this army. During the bloody battles he achieves military exploits with his battle axe and wins the favor of the kings’ consultant Einhard. When Arnulf eventually destroys Irminsul, the biggest Saxon sanctuary, his future seems bright. But a hostage at the king’s court unravels the knight’s world: It is Widukind’s sister. And no axe or shield can help him against her charms… With the first volume of the Arnulf/saga the author portraits the expiring 8th century, which is coined by superstition, brutality, godliness and passion. Across the whole Franconian camp there is the gulf between the civilized scholars, like Einhard, and the fanatic chaplain of Charles, who wants to exterminate the pagan belief. Both sides fight with all available means to expand their influence on the king.

The people of Amalea are about to clean the world from the last supporters of darkness and help the gods back to their power… Thorn, Chara, Telos and Bargh swore fidelity to Al’Jebal. Only Thorn stays suspicious and follows his own plans. After a hard apprenticeship under the best of Al’Jebal’s supporters, the heroes are sent to their first mission far away from Ashrans and the Valianian Imperium. What the four do not know is this: The mission is one of three tests from Al’Jebal that are meant to prepare them for each of their fates. Telos discovers his true destiny during this first deadly mission at the Kabugna/Islands, Chara is confronted with a shocking realization of her own nature and Thorn has to face his past which directly takes him back to the Valianian Imperium to end what was once started. Meanwhile, the first signs appear that do not announce a golden time period at all. And while Chara, Telos, Bargh and Thorn each seal their fate, Al’Jebal starts to prepare for a war that will shake the world… “There is a principle that resembles fate very much. It follows the same rules, results in the same thing and sends us on the same journey. It whisperingly talks of a beginning, of a change, of an end. Where the Gods have no power, there it is the Alpha and the Omega. This principle is called strategy. If it is supposed to be like this, then let it be. Everyone is there where he is supposed to be.” Series: Amalea: The last chaos/war during the third Dark Period was won by the supporters of order. In the year 342 after the foundation of Fiorinde, the people of Amalea believe that chaos, thus Evil, is defeated. There is only one who sees the world with different eyes. He lives in the South of Amalea, is famous for his army of Orcs and Assassins and is said to be one of the most powerful surviving supporters of chaos. His name is Al’Jebal. The chronicles of chaos and order is a story about the winding road of an Assassin, a war priest, a ranger and a barbarian. While they are entangled in the big war between the powers of chaos and order, they gradually discover the truth about the origin of the world, of humanity and of magic. During their contribution to the war they realize that the fate of Amalea is controlled by only a few and that the world is far bigger than assumed. Thereby they walk all paths – in light and in the darkness, between chaos and order, as murderer and lovers, as hunters and hunted… And until the end they are accompanied by a man named Al’Jebal. In a world which offers everything that ever existed in the genre of fantasy (Elves, Dwarfs, Dragons, Vampires, Werewolves, Centaurs, Demons and Gods…) a cosmos unfolds which is still completely strange to us. And the best known being carries this cosmos within itself – the human. Whenever a human is the center of a fantasy novel and is shown in all its facets, the bright and the dark ones, without any kind of extenuation, fantasy comes to life, turns into High Fantasy and transforms into Real Fantasy.

        Mein Leben lang nierenkrank

        Ein Mut/mach/Buch

        by Petznick, Marion

“We can fulfill our dreams despite the handicap; we just have to prepare them better than healthy people do.” What does it mean to be ill all your life? Which ways lead out of this crisis? How can I fulfill my dreams and wishes despite a handicap? These and other questions are addressed by Marion Petznick in her book. In the middle of her life she draws conclusions regarding an eventful time and tells the story of her winding road with a kidney disease. With hope and motivation Petznick wants to bolster people in similar situations, so they will not give up. That way she tells the moving story of her life and describes how she managed to achieve her aims despite the disease. The potentially deadly kidney disease is diagnosed when Marion Petznick is only two years old. When the disease gets so worse that a dialysis becomes inevitable, she decides for a less common healing dialysis called the ‘peritoneal dialyses’. She reports about her experiences with the center of dialysis and weighs the pros and cons of the different procedures. After the fall of the Berlin wall she can travel wherever she wants and implements it in spite of the dialysis. She is lucky and receives a new kidney through transplantation. She tenderly calls this kidney ‘Paul’. In her book the author gives advice concerning the enjoyment of food despite a kidney disease, journeys and the fulfilment of compulsion to move. Thereby she also allows several experts on the subject of kidney diseases to speak. She makes clear that individual initiative and responsibility give life a better quality and that diseases can be understood as chances to deal with life more intensively, but also to contact others. Everybody who is authentic, credible and genuine will get honest consolation and find confidence in life. That way new perspectives can be developed and designed. Just have the courage!

Olympia 1936. Danach kam alles anders

        by Hemeyer, Karl

In August 1946 the first food supplies from American civils reached the Bremer habours. But how was this biggest aid program of the world history until then achieved? Within his book Karl Hemeyer gives an answer to this question, which is as entertaining as it is informative. Home here and home there – but what do you do when you are no longer welcome in your home? What do you do when you cannot fulfill your aims and imaginations at home? The brothers David and Harro Stern from Wesermünde (now Bremerhaven) face exactly these problems when they return home from the Olympic Games in Berlin 1936. As journalists for the Nordsee magazine they spent an exciting time there and made friends with the stadium announcer Henri Nannen, the director Leni Riefenstahl and the Afro American sprinter Ralf, a college of Jesse Owens. They had an eventful future for themselves in their mind and planned to take over their father’s publishing house and expand it. But everything came differently… Because of persecution and escape, then because of war and imprisonment, the disparate brothers and their wayward father are suddenly separated. They never lose sight of their new aim to one day see each other and their father again, despite the constantly threatening and changing dangers and the connected tragedies, as well as the few happy events. Against this historical background a thrilling and adventurous story unfolds about the Brothers Stein whose fate is gripping from the beginning. The author successfully brings the protagonists close to the reader by telling entertainingly, fast/paced and pictorially.

        by Koch, Cécile

Cécile Koch reflects how, with the eyes of a child, she watched her once attractive, charming and witty mother lose control of her life and her family. Partly set off by the marriage to manic/depressive alcoholic who is also addicted to narcotics, the mother lets her own addictions take over, before being defeated by them. Young Cécile, an outsider among her peers, tries to cope with her reality by adjusting it with the help of her vivid phantasy. But when with advancing age she realizes that an internal escape will not suffice, her eagerness to leave home grows. At the age of 14, she runs away to travel with a small circus, earning her keep with the only thing she has – herself. Though torn inside, she decides that anything is better than staying home. An involuntary return shakes the ground beneath her feet, causing her to search for meaning in empty relationships, drug abuse and repeated attempts to take her own life. When her mother dies of liver failure, Cécile manages to turn her life around and begin the road to recovery. This autobiographic novel about a young woman’s relationship to her mother tells of a life without a sheltered childhood and the attempt to seize one’s own destiny through courage and a strong will to live – and the problems that come with these attempts.
