A snapshot of the American avant-garde in the 1930s

Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. This book, published in collaboration with The Photographers' Gallery, London, presents a wide selection of photographs of the cast, performances, and other material - many images reproduced for the first time - alongside essays by an international range of scholars exploring different aspects of the opera, including dance, fashion, music, and avant-garde writing, as well as photography.

Since the middle of the twentieth century the world has witnessed a succession of political and social disruptions. Globalisation, technological advancement, climate change, human migration, war and conflict - all have caused major worldwide upheavals. In this light, it's unsurprising that conservation of rare breed animals has been neglected. Yet the preservation of these genetic resources - this biological diversity - is an essential ingredient of sustainable life on Earth, and not something we can afford to lose. This book, straight from the 'horse's mouth' Lawrence Alderson CBE, challenges often repeated 'facts' about livestock farming and argues for a reasoned and evidence-based approach from political and public circles. Correcting misconceptions as he goes, he recounts the creation and development of the rare breed conservation movement, addresses extinctions and genetic safe-guarding measures, and considers where we go from here. Challenged as we are by climate change, sustainability and feeding the world, perhaps it is these endangered animals that hold the answer - perhaps with them, we can adapt to our changing environment and see a way forward to a more certain future.

In den darauffolgenden Jahren schaffte ihre Mutter es nicht mehr aus dem Bett, geschweige denn aus dem Haus. »Ein normales Familienleben«, sagt Stein, »war nicht mehr möglich seit dieser Zeit. Meiner Kindheit.« Steins Mutter hatte Angststörungen. Wie man heute weiß, leidet jeder vierte Deutsche irgendwann im Leben daran. In den achtziger Jahren waren sie der breiten Öffentlichkeit noch nicht bekannt. Mit dem Mut der Verzweiflung beschloss Stein, selber zu erforschen, was ihr die Kindheit stahl. Sie übernahm zu Hause die Mutter-, dann die Beobachterrolle. Wurde erwachsen, führte Selbstversuche durch, ließ Gentests und Hirnscans anfertigen, sprach mit Betroffenen, Ärzten, Pharmakologen, Chemikern, Apothekern. Kurz: Sie tauchte in alle Ängste ein, die ihr begegneten. Den Effekt ihrer Recherchen stellte die Autorin sich wie ein Stahlbad vor. Um vielleicht so gefeit zu sein vor der wirklich bangen, alles entscheidenden Frage: Was, wenn es ihrer Mutter nie besser gehen würde? Ihr Schicksal, ihre Suche nach Antworten wurde eine Forschungsreise in das limbische System der heutigen Gesellschaft. Und liest sich ebenso spannend wie berührend.
