On the Life and Death of Insects

        The world of Jean-Henri Fabre

        by Stephan Krall

        — 200th anniversary of the birth of Jean-Henri Fabre on 21 December 2023 — First all-encompassing biography of the entomologist — Biodiversity as a hot topic Jean-Henri Fabre (1823–1915) was a French teacher, scientist and researcher. At a time when insects were not among the preferred biological objects of study (and if they were, it was only for them to be collected, pinned and identified), Fabre began to conduct behavioural research on insects. This was not appreciated until very late in his life, so Fabre and his family were largely destitute most of the time. Stephan Krall provides a very personal account of this extraordinary and passionate researcher of insects, spiders and scorpions, who managed to publish scientific documents, complete his doctorate and write books on the side. Today he is considered as one of the founding fathers of the behavioural biology of insects.

        The After-Time Chronicles

        One Small Spark

        by Andy Woodage

In the footsteps of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series comes Andy Woodage's debut novel and our entrance into his bio-engineered fantasy world. The After-Time Chronicles: One Small Spark is a young-adult fantasy novel of good, evil, genetically engineered creatures, romance, blood, and the search for belonging. Imagine a world without oil, where metals are only available if they can be salvaged or recycled. Imagine if coal was running out. It’s a world where armies no longer build metal monsters, but biological horrors. A world where genetic engineering has become the art of war. This is 12-year-old Jothan’s world. Orphaned by a terrible accident, he dreams of leaving his uneventful life with his grandparents on the family’s griffin farm. However, when a catastrophic attack wipes out every homestead in The Zoological Zone, his world is turned upside down. He finds himself thrust into a story larger than he ever dreamed, embarking on a rough journey with a mysteriously appearing warrior to the fabled ‘Temple of Elohim’. Accompanied by his best friend, the griffin Gozell, Jothan sets off across a land ravaged by poverty and wild creatures. Battling his way across the dangerous landscape, his eyes are opened to an empire in the grip of war and unrest... with the ever increasing weight of his role in events to come. Will they make it to the Temple? Will they be welcomed when they arrive? Can Jothan unravel the secrets that seem to control the lives of everyone he meets, including his mysterious saviour?

        Fish in Distress

On the careful management of an endangered resource

        by Manfred Kriener, Stefan Linzmaier

Consumers stand perplexed at the fish counter. Cod or salmon; mackerel or sea bass? Or perhaps rather carp and trout? How about flounder and dab? Dab what? A terrific flatfish, but sadly hardly anyone has heard of it. And what was it again about organic, aquaculture, wild-caught, and that little blue sustainability certificate? Is catching your own a way out? Before you start thinking it’s time to opt for a chop and fried potatoes instead, read this book. It provides readers with deep blue facts from the world’s waters and analyses the global and local habitat of the finned creature.

        Cryptos

        by Poznanski, Ursula

Where do we go when Nowhere is the only destination left?   Kerrybrook is Jana‘s favourite virtual escape. An idyllic fishing village with beautiful nature and, every now and then, a breeze of fresh air from the nearby sea. Jana, is this world‘s designer and person in power, she’s satisfied with her masterpiece. Best job so far. Until one day, a dead body is found, in both, ’Virtual Reality‘ and the real world. In times of climate change, VR is the only safe place for humankind. That‘s why Jana needs to solve the crime, she’s responsible for stopping the destruction.   • CliFi Thriller (Climate Fiction): Climate change & virtual reality • For fans of Black Mirror (Netflix) • All age readers • Strong, female protagonist • Highly relevant topic   WHITE RAVENS recommendation (2021):   "In the not too distant future, the world is an inhospitable place: droughts, storms, floods. That’s why world designers construct »alternative realities«, such as landscapes populated by dinosaurs, life at court in the Middle Ages, and surfing and chilling out on a beach. People can switch between these worlds at will and, when they die there, they are not truly dead; instead, they merely return to the »real world« – same as at night when they sleep. Then they are reunited with their body, which is lying inside a capsule.   In »Cryptos«, Ursula Poznanski pulls out all the stops of storytelling: She embeds numerous references to human and intellectual history in an action-packed and extremely suspenseful thriller plot. In the process, she raises central existential and ontological questions that result from the interplay between the real and the virtual worlds. This complex dystopian novel is narrated in such an enjoyable way that readers will hardly notice their brains going into overdrive as they devour it."

        Hotel California

        by Ramón Valdés Elizondo

Damián flees from two assassins who are chasing him on a lonely desert road. He manages to elude them but his car is running out of gas. In the distance he discovers a hotel that looks abandoned from the outside. He knocks on the door and is greeted by Mercedes, a beautiful blonde who invites him in. Inside the hotel is spectacular: every detail is taken care of to perfection, but there is something shady lurking within its walls and corridors. Damián thinks he hears voices calling his name, although he attributes them to stress and fatigue. Our anguished protagonist lives a terrifying experience when he tries to leave the next day and inexplicable things happen that prevent him from doing so. Suddenly, Damian will be trapped in this place that changes, that whispers, that makes us doubt if he is living a nightmare or if everything is a product of his hallucinations. A novel written to the rhythm of rock, with nods to horror classics and a twist that will take you to a place you may never be able, or want, to leave.

        The Perils of Skinny-dipping

        by Julie Sandilands

Readership: Women's fiction Genre: Romance/adventure Manuscript length 65,000 words   Abbey Harris is a successful, career woman and enjoys a comfortable life style in the leafy Cheshire suburbs. One Sunday, she spots an advertisement for volunteers to work on an ecological project in the north of Botswana, and impulsively applies.   Abbey arrives in Kasane, ready to complete a one year contract with an international charity, working in the forestry unit. A few months into her contract, Abbey meets Darren, a diamond prospector, falls in love, and marries. As Abbey settles into her new life, she has to battle her way through black magic, arson and a poisonous snake lurking under her bed. To add to her problems she also has to contend with Anna, a stunning South African, who is determined to rekindle a relationship with Darren, undermining Abbey’s confidence whenever she can.    Abbey has two colleagues, Richard and Phil, who have both run away from responsibilities and failures at home in the England. Richard is an emotionally dysfunctional man, who in a bid to dominate others, treats people, especially women, with disdain and suspicion.  His attitude towards the Batswana women whom he uses for his personal gratification, demonstrates an inability to interact with the opposite sex in a meaningful way. Richard’s growing frustration of his two colleagues result in him devising a plot which he thinks will eliminate both of them out of his life forever.   Just as Abbey thinks she is settled and her problems are behind her, the sudden death of her mother forces her to temporarily return to the UK.  Here, she has to not only reassess her feelings, and come to terms the loss of her mother, but finds herself on a collision course with her estranged father. The rift between father and daughter is not just one of geographical distance, but deep rooted in an upbringing Abbey struggles to come to terms with.   Local characters are also important to the story, their individual accounts intertwined around the two main characters. Each character is based on a person who was/is known by the author. Names and other personal details have been changed; however, both Botswana and the Batswana have been portrayed as a proud, gracious race of people who readily accept newcomers into their hearts and communities. The story takes the reader from Gaborone in the south, to Kasane in the north.   The Perils of Skinny-dipping is a love story which documents one woman’s desire to find inner peace and create a meaningful life which has so far eluded her. It also describes the beauty and uniqueness of a country which enjoys both political and economic stability, and, reflects on its achievements as well as its problems. It observes the interaction between rich and poor, black and white, as they strive to live in harmony side by side
