Communitarian thought and New Labour

Blair's community is an exciting and timely book which challenges the accepted wisdom about the role of communitarian thought in the development of New Labour under Tony Blair. From the mid-1990s there has been a widespread view that Labour policies have reflected, or even been influenced by, the work of communitarian writers like Amitai Etzioni and John Macmurray, and philosophers such as Alasdair MacIntyre and Michael Sandel. The book begins by establishing that such a view was widely, and frequently unquestioningly, held, in both popular and academic forums. It then identifies reasons for the persistence of this impression, the evidence on which it was based, and the understandings of communitarianism used by commentators. The book argues that existing accounts of 'New Labour's communitarianism' fail to present an accurate picture because they are - in some cases explicitly - working with a generic or composite conception of communitarianism which bears little relation to the work of the communitarian writers whose names have been associated with the party. ;

Chantal Akerman is widely acclaimed as one of the most original and important directors working in Europe today. A towering figure in women's and feminist film-making, she has produced a diverse and intensely personal body of work ranging from minimalist portraits of the everyday to exuberant romantic comedies, and from documentaries and musicals to installation art. This book traces the director's career at the crossroads between experimental and mainstream cinema, contextualising her work within the American avant-garde of the 1970s, European anti-naturalism, feminism and the post-modern aesthetics. While offering an in-depth analysis of her multi-faceted film style, it also stresses the social and ethical dimension of her work, especially as regards her representation of marginal groups and her exploration of exilic and diasporic identities. Wider die kosmopolitische Illusion

In westlichen Gesellschaften sind post-politische Konzepte des Dritten Weges derzeit en vogue. Sie propagieren eine konsensuelle Form von Demokratie jenseits der politischen Opposition von rechts und links. Chantal Mouffe kritisiert daran, daß diese Konzepte die antagonistische Dimension des Politischen und die Ambivalenz der menschlichen Natur leugnen. Nach einer Analyse des Begriffs des Politischen, die sich auf Carl Schmitt stützt, übt Mouffe Kritik an Habermas, Rorty, Giddens und Beck. Unter Bezug auf aktuelle Probleme wie den Terrorismus deckt sie Defizite und politische Gefahren post-politischer Konzepte auf und argumentiert zwingend gegen die Möglichkeit eines universalen rationalen Konsenses und für den antagonistischen Charakter von Politik. Über das Politische ist eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem aktuellen Zustand und der Zukunft der Demokratie. Chantal Mouffe ist Professorin für Politische Theorie am Centre of the Study of Democracy an der Universität Westminster.
