Die Mission der Gesundheitserziehung Hadassah: Die amerikanischen zionistischen Frauen im Heiligen Land von Prof. Schifra Shvarts und Dr. Zipora Shehory-Rubin mit Prof. Yoel Donchin Die Buch Hadassah behandelt die Themen Frauen, Gesundheit und Zionismus. Das Buch konzentriert sich hauptsächlich auf das einzigartige Bestreben der Mitglieder der Hadassah Women's Organisation, die es als ihre Aufgabe ansahen, auf der Grundlage ihrer amerikanischen Erfahrungen im Bereich moderne öffentliche Gesundheitsdienste für die jüdische Gemeinde in Palästina unter britischer Herrschaft ein Gesundheitswesen aufzubauen. In diesen ersten zehn Jahren erhielten 46.000 schwangere Frauen und 53.000 Kinder Hilfe durch dieses Gesundheitssystem, Krankenschwestern erledigten 700.000 Hausbesuche, und die 44 Mütter- und Säuglingsstationen, die flächendeckend ihre Dienste bereitstellten, wurden 1,7 Millionen Mal besucht. Dank dieser Dienste sank die Kindersterblichkeit in der jüdischen Gemeinde signifikant von 144 pro 1000 im Jahre 1922 auf 54 pro 1000 im Jaher 1939 (im Vergleich zu 50 pro 1000 in den USA und 53 pro 1000 in Großbritannien). Kein anderer vergleichbarer Dienst hat in so kurzer Zeit so bemerkenswerte Ergebnisse erzielt. Alle öffentlichen Gesundheitsdienste unter dem Dach der Hadassah waren für alle Menschen gleichermaßen zugänglich, einschließlich der arabischen Bevölkerung. Die Mission wurde hauptsächlich von der zionistischen Ideologie des Aufbaus einer neuen, körperlich und geistig gesunden Nation getragen. Der öffentliche Gesundheitsauftrag dieser amerikanischen Frauen war ein integraler Bestandteil des zionistischen Engagements zu diesem Zeitpunkt. Doch im Gegensatz zu anderen Bereichen der zionistischen Tätigkeit in Palästina während dieser Zeit wurde die Organisation ausschließlich von Frauen getragen. Dieses Buch ist die Geschichte dieser engagierten amerikanischen zionistischen Frauen und ihrer bemerkenswerten Leistungen und Beiträge für die Gesundheit der jüdischen Gemeinde in Palästina in der Frühzeit des Aufbaus des Landes. Das Buch Hadassah enthält Original-Bilder, die vor ein paar Jahren in einem der alten Hadassah-Lagerräume in Jerusalem von Prof. Yoel Donchin entdeckt wurden und derzeit in einer Sonderausstellung im Jerusalem Theater gezeigt werden. Über die Autoren Schifra Shvarts, Ph.D., ist außerordentliche Professorin für Geschichte der Medizin an der Ben-Gurion-Universität und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Gertner-Institut für Epidemiologie und Health Policy Research, Sheba Medical Center. Sie ist spezialisiert auf die soziale Geschichte der Medizin und der öffentlichen Gesundheit vom neunzehnten zum zwanzigsten Jahrhundert in Israel. Umstandslos fand man sich angeschlossen an Maiers Welt aus Wetterau, Familie, Fußball, Apfelwein, aus Thomas Bernhard und dem Evangelium nach Matthäus, aus Ängsten, Kneipenfreuden und -nöten, eingepackt in absurde Vorkommnisse und komische Erlebnisse. Jede Kolumne beginnt mit einem »Neulich«-Satz, die erste so: »Neulich war ich in Berlin. Das wird jetzt niemand weiter ungewöhnlich finden, aber ich bin Hesse, und mir ging in Berlin ein Wunsch in Erfüllung.« Dennoch handelt es sich um alles andere als ein Kolumnenbuch. Vielmehr nimmt Onkel J. – im Übergang von den ersten vier Romanen zu Maiers Projekt »Ortsumgehung« – eine zentrale Stelle ein. »Alles gehört zusammen, und für alles ist das Kolumnenbuch der Kern.«

Yitzhak Rabin – The Growth of A Leader

“Even before Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated, I always saw him as an enigmatic hero,” writes the author Dr. Shaul Weber. This enigma only intensified after his assassination. Rabin’s appearances in the media and the testimony given by those close to him reflected a complexity that could not be ignored. Always surrounded by others, he stood out as an emotionally distant loner. A politician who projected unease with the political norms, and basically a man of integrity and morality, he was nevertheless willing to stray from his ideals in the interests of national security. Despite his undiplomatic image, he became a senior diplomat and national leader. Rabin, emotionally withdrawn, shy and blunt throughout his formative years, demanded uncompromising perfection from himself and others. Blessed with impressive analytic capabilities, he demonstrated the qualities of leadership, even when not quite ready to assume the onerous mantle of military leadership when that role was forced on him by circumstances beyond his control. In his early days with the Palmach, Rabin comes across as a man who glorified camaraderie, but who was lonely, shy and unable to communicate. Although he spoke in terms of “we,” he closed himself off from others, putting up barriers of individualism and fastidiousness. Cool and analytic, he paradoxically had a hot temper and was known to speak bluntly, even offensively. However, in the latter years of his life, he learned to better express his feelings and project more warmth. As an educator and historian, Dr. Webber assumes that every human being is a product of his childhood and upbringing, which offers only partial solutions to the riddle of Rabin’s boyhood, his adolescence, and his painful ordeal as commander of the Harel Brigade during Israel's 1948 War of Independence. Throughout his life, and especially after his death, Rabin was said to be the “salt of the earth.” It appears, however, that in order to earn this noble title, one has to eat a lot of bitter herbs, too. This book is about those bitter herbs. Each year the president and the prime minister of Israel present prizes – usually to writers – for the best works related to one of each of their predecessors. This year the prize winner for memorizing Yitzhak Rabin was Dr. Shaul Weber for his book The Growth of a Leader, which follows Rabin’s path from childhood through to his youth in the Palmah and subsequently in the army, and sheds fresh light on what influenced Rabin’s growth as a military leader, a diplomat and a political leader. Shaul Webber was born in Tel Aviv. After his army service, he joined Kibbutz Ha'on nearby the Kinneret (the Sea of Galilee). When the Six-Day War was over he joined Kibbutz Merom Golan in the Golan Heights, and worked there as an educator and teacher. The author received his B.A. in philosophy and education from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, an M.A. in education from Haifa University, and his Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Today he lives in Ramat Gan and teaches education and history at the Open University. This is Dr. Webber’s third book. His first book, A Blue Shirt on a Black Background, was published in 1998 and describes how the youth movements in Eretz Israel related to the Diaspora during and after the Holocaust. His second book, Mystery Hill, published in 2003, analyzes the famous battle of Ammunition Hill from his personal point of view as a soldier who participated in that terrible bloodshed, as well as from the perspective of a researcher and historian. His recently published book, The Spy Who Was Forgotten, is about Major Max Bennett – one of Israel's most controversial and tragic undercover agents, a brilliant intelligence officer who was recklessly involved by his superiors in the notoriously failed secret operation in Egypt in the early 50s, and who tragically ended his life there in a prison cell. The Hadassah Book covers the topics of women, public health, and Zionism. The book focuses mainly on the unique endeavor of the members of the Hadassah Women’s Organization, who took upon themselves the mission of building modern public health services for the Jewish community in Palestine under British rule, based on their American experience in that field. During these first ten years, public health services were provided to 46,000 pregnant women, 53,000 infants, 700,000 house visits were made by nurses, and 1.7 million visits were made to the 44 maternal and infant welfare centers that provided services nationwide. Thanks to these services, infant mortality in the Jewish community dropped significantly from 144:1000 in 1922 to 54:1000 in 1939 (compared to 50:1000 in the U.S. and 53:1000 in the U.K.). No other similar endeavor has achieved such remarkable results in such a short period of time. All public health services provided under the umbrella of Hadassah were equal to all, including the Arab community. The mission was based mainly on the Zionist ideology of building a new nation healthy in body and mind. The public health mission of these American women was an integral part of the Zionist mission and activities at that time. However, unlike other fields of Zionist activity in Palestine during this period, it was led completely and only by women. This book is the story of these determined American Zionist women and their remarkable achievements and contributions to the health of the Jewish community in Palestine, which was the early offspring of a nation in building. The Hadassah Book also includes original pictures that were discovered only a few years ago in one of the old Hadassah storage rooms in Jerusalem by Prof. Yoel Donchin, and they are currently displayed at a special exhibition in the Jerusalem Theater. About the Authors Shifra Shvarts, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of the History of Medicine at Ben-Gurion University, and a researcher at the Gertner Institute for Epidemiology and Health Policy Research, Sheba Medical Center. She specializes in the social history of medicine and public health in nineteenth- to twentieth-century Israel. She has published six books on the development and history of the Israeli health care system. She is also the author of the Israeli HMO indices in the Israeli Medical Encyclopedia and in the Encyclopedia Judaica. Zipora Shehory-Rubin, Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer at Kaye Academic College of Education in Beer-Sheva, Israel, where she teaches the history of education and Hebrew language. She received her Ph.D. in history from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev after completing her dissertation on Hadassah's educational enterprises and health activities during British Mandatory rule over Palestine. Her publications include books and articles on various aspects of the history of education and the history of medicine. Prof. Yoel Donchin, M.D., is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the Hadassah Medical Center, Hebrew University, Jerusalem. After graduating from Hadassah Medical School, he continued his residency at Hadassah, where he is now the head of the Patient Safety Center. He also rescued and preserved more than 1,000 photographs from Hadassah’s early years and films created during that period. Currently he is the president of the Israeli Society of the History of Medicine. An English-language eBook edition was published in Summer 2012 by Samuel Wachtman's Sons, Inc., CA.
