This edited volume examines the political, economic and security legacies former US President Barack Obama leaves across Asia and the Pacific, following two terms in office between 2009 and 2017. The aim is to advance our understanding of Obama's style, influence and impact during that time and the regional footprint he leaves behind. Moreover, it is to inform upon the endurance of, and prospects for, that legacy after two years of the Presidency of Donald Trump. The volume uniquely explores US engagement with key Indo-Pacific states including China, India and Japan; multilateral institutions and organisations such the East Asia Summit and ASEAN; and issue areas such as regional security, politics and diplomacy, and the economy. The making of a modern artist

Alone of his contemporaries, J.M.W. Turner is commonly held to have prefigured modern painting, as signalled in the existence of The Turner Prize for contemporary art. Our celebration of his achievement is very different to what Victorian critics made of his art. This book shows how Turner was reinvented to become the artist we recognise today. On Turner's death in 1851 he was already known as an adventurous, even baffling, painter. But when the Court of Chancery decreed that the contents of his studio should be given to the nation, another side of his art was revealed that effected a wholescale change in his reputation. This book acts as a guide to the reactions of art writers and curators from the 1850s to the 1960s as they attempted to come to terms with his work. It documents how Turner was interpreted and how his work was displayed in Britain, in Europe and in North America, concentrating on the ways in which his artistic identity was manipulated by art writers, by curators at the Tate and by designers of exhibitions for the British Council and other bodies. ;

Erzählt wird die Geschichte einiger junger Leute, die in einer zukünftigen Stadt Australiens aufwachsen, in der sich die Massen drängen, in der aber nur die Privilegierten Arbeit und menschenwürdige Unterkünfte haben, und die Städte allmählich in den steigenden Fluten des Ozeans und des Elends versinken – eine Folge des Treibhauseffektes, der zu katastrophalen Klimaveränderungen und als Folge davon zu weltweiten Hungersnöten führt. Der überwiegende Teil der Bevölkerung muß eine von Gewalt geprägte, kümmerliche Existenz fristen. Trotz des düsteren Hintergrunds, der andere Antiutopien anklingen läßt, ist dies keineswegs ein pessimistisches, deprimierendes Buch, sondern eine differenzierte Lektüre, die menschlichen Unternehmungsgeist und Mut feiert, die sich auch durch bedrückende äußere Umstände nicht unterkriegen lassen.

The European or Mediterranean cultivated olive (Olea europaea L., subsp. europaea, var. europaea) is one of the most ancient cultivated fruit tree crops. Today, hundreds of olive varieties are grown to produce high-quality fruit for oil and for table olives consumption. The olive industry has undergone profound innovations in the past 30 years, due to scientific and technical advances, particularly in genomics, breeding, orchard management, mechanization and agro-ecology, although not all these developments are yet available to smaller producers. Olive cultivation has also spread to many countries outside the Mediterranean Basin, where it ihas been traditionally present for over 6,000 years. Bordering intimacy explores the interconnected role of borders and dominant forms of family intimacy in the governance of postcolonial states. Combining a historical investigation with postcolonial, decolonial and black feminist theory, the book reveals how the border policies of the British and other European empires have been reinvented for the twenty-first century through appeals to protect and sustain 'family life' - appeals that serve to justify and obfuscate the continued organisation of racialised violence. The book examines the continuity of colonial rule in numerous areas of contemporary government, including family visa regimes, the policing of 'sham marriages', counterterror strategies, deprivation of citizenship, policing tactics and integration policy.

On 16 March 1968, two US infantry companies entered a Vietnamese village and in the course of a single morning killed over 400 of its unarmed, unresisting inhabitants . . . This is the first book to examine the response of American society to the My Lai massacre and its ambiguous place in American national memory. Kendrick Oliver argues that the massacre revelations left many Americans untroubled. It was only when the soldiers most immediately responsible came to be tried that opposition to the conflict grew, for these prosecutions were regarded by supporters of the war as evidence that the national leaders no longer had the will to do what was necessary to win. Oliver goes on to show that, contrary to interpretations of the Vietnam conflict as an unhealed national trauma or wound, many Americans have assimilated the war and its violence rather too well, and they were able to do so even when that violence was most conspicuous and current. US soldiers have been presented as the conflict's principal victims, and this was true even in the case of My Lai. It was the American perpetrators of the massacre and not the Vietnamese they brutalized who became the central object of popular concern. Both the massacre and its reception reveal the problem of human empathy in conditions of a counter-revolutionary war - a war, moreover, that had always been fought for geopolitical credibility, not for the sake of the Vietnamese. This incisive enquiry into the moral history of the Vietnam war should be essential reading for all students of the conflict, as well as others interested in the war and its cultural legacies. ;

Gerade erst hatte er als Laie auf dem Gebiet der Anatomie gezeigt, dass Menschen und Tiere viel enger miteinander verwandt waren, als Wissenschaft und Kirche es gelehrt hatten. In seiner Begeisterung über den gelungenen Nachweis des Zwischenkieferknochens beim Menschen wollte er sich nun auch mit dem Knochenbau von Elefanten beschäftigen – der selbst Fachleuten einige Rätsel aufgab. Für seine Forschungen scheute Goethe keine Mühen und ließ sich sogar einen Elefantenschädel quer durch das Land zusenden. Mit aufwendigen Zeichnungen fasste er die Ergebnisse seiner Arbeit zusammen und forderte mit seinem neuen Blick auf die Entwicklungsgeschichte die Fachgelehrten seiner Zeit heraus. Oliver Matuschek begibt sich in Naturkundemuseen auf die Spuren von »Goethes Elefanten« und führt die Entdeckungsreise des Dichters und Naturforschers detailreich und kurzweilig vor Augen.
