        Into the woods

        An epistemography of climate change

        by Meritxell Ramírez-i-Ollé

This book is a detailed exploration of the working practices of a community of scientists exposed in public, and of the making of scientific knowledge about climate change in Scotland. For four years, the author joined these scientists in their sampling expeditions into the Caledonian forests, observed their efforts in the laboratory to produce data from wood samples and followed their discussions of a graph showing the evolution of the Scottish temperature over the past millennium in conferences, workshops and peer-review journals. This epistemography of climate change is of broad social and academic relevance - both for its contextualised treatment of a key contemporary science, and for its original formulation of a methodology for investigating expertise.

        Olive Oil and Health

by Edited by Jose L Quiles, Carmen Ramirez-Tortosa, Parveen Yaqoob

Nutritional aspects of dietary fats, in general, and of olive oil in particular, are of great interest in many nutrition-related pathologies in which they are implicated. Olive oil plays an important role in the reduction of blood cholesterol levels, hence reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. It is a good source of antioxidants in the form of polyphenols and vitamin E and there is also emerging evidence that olive oil has a role in reducing the incidence of certain types of cancer. This book discusses and summarizes current research and knowledge on olive oil.

Hurley, Fiona Impson, Cally Jansen, Nolweth

The book provides a comprehensive overview of current knowledge about "wattles", a large clade of over 1000 species of trees and shrubs in the genus Acacia, most of which are native to Australia. It examines the biology, ecology, evolution, and biogeography of wattles in their native ranges, including the evolutionary forces that have driven past speciation and adaptation to diverse environments, the conservation status, uses and human perceptions of these species. It considers the different histories of the introductions and proliferation of wattles as alien species in different parts of the world since c. 1850 (the Anthropocene), situated within relevant political, socio-economic and scientific contexts, together with an analysis of how awareness of their impacts as invasive species has changed over time. Differences in the dynamics and trends associated with the introduction, naturalization and invasion of wattles in different parts of the world are reviewed. The book also synthesizes the global distribution of wattles using diverse data sources, alongside trends, patterns and projections of global uses of wattles. It discusses the genetics, biotic interactions, and ecological, economic and social impacts of invasive wattles. The first comprehensive global synthesis in book form of aspects of the biology, ecology, biogeography and management of one of the world's most important woody plant genera. Provides the foundation for the assessment of evidence-based information required to formulate sustainable management strategies for non-native plants that have both benefits and negative impacts. Sheds new light on many aspects of plant invasion science. This book is aimed at academics and students in the field of ecology, and at managers of natural and anthropic ecosystems, policy-makers and regulators, and the general public interested in biology and environmental science.

        Pura sangre (Pure blood)

        by Moisés Ramírez

With a rhythmic irregularity that breaks its own voice, this work contains a deceptive but measured movement, as if it were the footwork of a boxer, which gradually envelops the reader. There is a singular back-and-forth in this collection of poems: scenarios described through sensations, through immaterial elements; and sensations exposed through physical ingredients. There is bebop. Words are left behind. And then they come back on their own, lashing out. It is not surprising, then, that inside this book there is a reference to Thelonious Monk, an expansive creator who took harmony to its ultimate consequences. As the author himself puts it, this book is a horse on the prairie.

Rough Work. Illustrated Architecture by Smiljan Radic

by Smiljan Radic, Alan Chandler, Ricardo Serpell, Moisés Puente, Hans Ulrich Obrist.

In the last years, Smiljan Radic has become in one of the most renowned architects in the world, mainly due to his work’s eccentricity, his “significative contribution to architecture as an art” as recognized by the Arnold W. Brunner of the American Institute of Architects in 2018. Rough Work, written mainly by Radic himself, is an essential compilation of his work. Smiljan shares his thoughts, inspirations, heroes, and a selection of 24 key works that allows us to understand the architect’s trajectory. "In it, you will find a stolen title and other tales, together with my writing, frustrated projects, drawings and scribbles, academic excercises, happy buildings in use, others that are gone now, and many engineering plans. It is all part of what I have been able to build through 2015—a past that today takes a natural and expectant position in my present work, as if it were REMEMBERING A FORGETTING."—Smiljan Radic.

Tongolele did not know how to dance

        by Sergio Ramírez

Sergio Ramiréz’s returns to the noir genre with a novel about Nicaragua and the end of the Revolution's dream. We are in the middle of the twenty-first century, in a Nicaragua in the mist of popular revolts, which are being brutally repressed by the government, backed by the sinister executive arm of the head of the secret services. Inspector Dolores Morales must confront from a distance that terri-ble being dubbed Tongolele, ultimately responsible for his exile in Honduras, and who, with coldness and cynicism and partly thanks to the divinatory advice of his mother, pulls many a string of the country's deranged politics.Sergio Ramírez’s skillful prose gradually reveals a murky network, full of secrets, betrayals and dark maneuvers that Inspector Morales will have to face, backed by the ineffable Lord Dixon, Doña Sofía Smith and the rest of his associates. For, in that never-ending convulsive Nicaragua, any misstep might result in the ultimate demise of anyone who dares confront in any manner of way, no matter how petty it might appear, the powers that be.

      • SECRETOS DEL CLANDESTINAJE (Secrets of the underground)

Las vidas que alumbraron el levantamiento zapatista (The lives that illuminated the Zapatista uprising)

        by Federico Ramírez

Faced with the repression of the popular student movement, which in October 1968 culminated in the Tlatelolco massacre, dozens of guerrilla groups emerged in Mexico. Conceived to confront an implacable enemy, these organizations had to develop and act clandestinely, behind the back of the law, without being able to fully achieve their objective of linking up with the people they were trying to lead towards revolution, since they only came to public light in quick and small propaganda actions or in violent confrontations with soldiers and police, who persecuted with equal ferocity both militants and frightened citizens suspected of sympathizing with the subversives. In society, concerns arose without a clear and reliable answer: Who are these people really? Why do young people who could have a decent future expose themselves to almost certain death? And what is their daily life like; what do they do when they are not robbing banks? Where do they get their weapons? How can they abandon their parents, their partners, their children? What drives the increasingly rare survivors to continue fighting decade after decade without renouncing their ideas? The novel Secretos del clandestinaje offers a comprehensive and authoritative answer to these questions; it is an authentic narrative based on shocking real events that the author witnessed and knew directly from more than twenty years of militancy as a member of the Directorate of the National Liberation Forces and the Command of the Zapatista Army. When opening the book, hundreds of gray men and women who talk, dress, walk, work and travel, without distinguishing themselves from those around them? because their purpose is precisely to go unnoticed while they follow a policeman, acquire military manuals, receive donations of medicines, work in an oil company, rent apartments with assumed names, fill out forms in an embassy, teach or take classes, chat in parks and ice cream parlors, drive a cab, sell ground coffee in markets and restaurants... to fulfill the modest mission that day corresponds to them in the great project: to silently build the revolutionary organization to overthrow the regime.Through the lens of literary art, the reader will see everything from student rallies to jungle camps, passing through safe houses, recruitment of combatants, political debates, armed confrontations, persecutions, ambushes... acts, thoughts, emotions of men and women who, in the search for a world of justice and freedom, gave their lives and, if the time came, also their death.

by Ramírez Daza y García, Rómulo; Del Toro Comte, Cristina
