The Death of Cecil the Lion Made Sense

        by Olena Stiazhkina

This is the first novel Olena Styazhkina wrote in Ukrainian, and the theme of embracing Ukrainian identity is central to the plot. It takes place in Donbas over the course of several years: the reader follows the journeys of characters who are, at first, held back by Soviet mentalities. As a result of war, they undergo important changes relating to their understanding of themselves and their country, like the dentist who becomes a military surgeon or the cosmetics saleswoman who becomes a sniper shooting instructor. The characters go through a whirlpool of historical events and are reborn as Ukrainians.

        The Soul of a Lion

Reflections on a life lived with animals

        by Willie Labuschagne

The Soul of a Lion, an engaging memoir by Willie Labuschagne, is an exhilarating journey which begins with the young conservationist’s unique experiences with wild animals. From his groundbreaking research on the desert cheetah’s behaviour and ecology to becoming an internationally respected consultant on environmental and wildlife-related issues, he holds the reader’s attention with all the skill of the master storyteller. The numerous occasions when Willie faced potentially life-threatening situations with wild animals are vividly recounted, many of them wryly humorous while others evoke deep emotion. But not all animal encounters took place in the wild. A significant and poignant encounter that further inspired Willie’s approach to conservation occurred when, during his time as director of the Johannesburg Zoo, he and his family hand-raised a newborn lion cub that had been rejected by its mother. Willie shares his entertaining and often moving life experiences with warmth and understanding, whether it is sleeping under the stars with the bushmen of the Kgalagadi desert or observing the traditions of the Zulu Royal House. His travels in the African landscape in particular are an exciting panorama of many distinctive habitats, from the relentless desert of the Skeleton Coast in Namibia to the pristine beauty of the Tsitsikamma Forest and the breathtaking vastness of the African bushveld. He is forthright in his view of the critical position of the world we live in and the future it holds for mankind and believes that we are all part of a custodianship which should do everything in its power to protect our fragile environment.

        On the Move

by Art studio Agrafka (Authors), Art studio Agrafka (Illustrators)

The universe is always on the move: Nothing in it remains completely at rest. Movement is natural: The Earth, the water on it, the atmosphere, the continents, and all living organisms exist in a state of constant motion. We walk, run, jump, crawl, swim, and fly. We travel. This book is about movement and travel—not only by people, but also that of animals, plants, the wind, water, and our planet. It describes journeys for the purpose of trade and commerce, journeys for the purpose of pleasure and repose or for survival, as well as scientific expeditions and pilgrimages. It’s about migrations, maps, navigation, and, finally, about finding your own path. Travellers often hear questions associated with "where" and "where from:" "Where are you going?", "Where are you from?" This book is a visual and intellectual expedition through thousands of years of movement, in search of answers to these as well as many other questions related to movement.       From 6 to 9 years, 2896 words Rightsholders: Ivan Fedechko,  ivan.fedechko@starlev.com.ua

        Metrophobia

        by Myroslav Laiuk

Metrophobia is the second book of poetry by Miroslav Layuk. It is the space of language and the world it creates. A world that begins with small autobiographical stories (according to the author), marked with a dash-and-dot line of school trees, abandoned buildings, nursing homes, children's mental hospitals and cemeteries, and it grows into a Sonnetarium – the grand and disparate world of Ezra, in which all connoisseurs of this not very common today poetic genre will live luxuriously. The splendid artistic design by Zhanna Kadyrova further reveals this world, gives it a structure and monumental features, but at the same time seems to build a separate parallel, a separate perspective of movement into the depth of consideration, reading, and interpretation. Metrophobia was recognized as the best poetry collection of 2015 by the annual LitAkcent Literary Prize.

Bridges Instead of Walls, or What Unites Ukrainians?

        by Tetiana Teren

In this collection of essays, twenty Ukrainian intellectuals reflect on the phenomenon of social bridges and walls. Why do they both exist? Do bridges always bring understanding? Or do they perhaps sometimes allow crossing boundaries? Do walls necessarily separate? Or do they occasionally protect? With whom and how should we build bridges, and from whom shall we isolate by walls? The result of the media project of the Ukrainian branch of the International PEN Club, published in the New Time publication, is now under one cover. On the pages of the book, you will find essays by the following authors: Kateryna Kalytko, Kateryna Botanova, Vakhtang Kebuladze, Zoya Kazanzhy, Ostap Slyvinskyi, Olena Stiazhkina, Larysa Denysenko, Myroslava Barchuk, Viktoriya Amelina, Vitaliy Ponomariov, Vasyl Makhno, Volodymyr Rafeenko, Mykola Riabchuk, Volodymyr Yermolenko, Svitlana Pyrkalo, Borys Gudziak, Ihor Isichenko, Halyna Vdovychenko, Pavlo Kazarin, Vitaliy Portnykov. My Journey to the Land of Marines

        by Andriy Zelinskyi

My Journey to the Land of the Marines is the diary of a chaplain and a Marine. During the war in the East of Ukraine, Father Andriy Zelinskyi was side by side with the soldiers, shared with them their anxiety and unrest, supported, gave last rites to his comrades-in-arms, looked into the eyes of death, and appreciated every new day. This book is about how important it is to strive for victory and understand that the most important victory is over oneself; about how important it is to dream, not to give up, and to believe in the insurmountable power of the good.
