        Linking Urban and Rural Tourism

        Strategies in Sustainability

        by Susan L Slocum, Carol Kline

        Destinations rely on regional strategies to support and enhance the tourism product through regional partnerships and integration. Integrated tourism is defined as tourism that is explicitly linked to the economic, social, cultural, natural and human structures of the region in which it occurs. Integrated tourism has evolved to include numerous meanings and definitions but all of which have a vertical approach. The first of its kind, this book moves away from the vertical approach and provides insight into inclusive regional development strategies that support both the needs of urban and rural areas whilst enhancing the tourist experience, supporting the positive impacts of tourism and mitigating the negative. Regional studies tend to portray either an urban or rural focus without acknowledging that often these spaces constitute joint governance structures, similar historical and cultural roots, and economic dependencies. Sustainable tourism promotes sourcing locally, such as using rural agricultural products in urban tourism experiences. Furthermore, innovative marketing strategies linking tourism heritage, attractions, food and drink trails, and artisans with urban visitors are emerging. Including theoretical and applied research and international case studies, this will be a valuable resource to academics, students and practitioners working in tourism development and regional policy. ; This book provides insight into inclusive regional development strategies that support both the needs of urban and rural areas. Sustainable tourism promotes sourcing locally, such as using rural products in urban experiences, while innovative marketing linking tourism heritage, food and drink trails, and artisans with urban visitors are emerging.

        Carol Reed

        by Peter William Evans, Brian McFarlane, Neil Sinyard

        Carol Reed is one of the truly outstanding directors of British cinema, and one whose work is long overdue for reconsideration. This major study ranges over Reed's entire career, combining observation of general trends and patterns with detailed analysis of twenty films, both acknowledged masterpieces and lesser-known works. Evans avoids a simplistic auteurist approach, placing the films in their autobiographical, socio-political and cultural contexts and relating these to the analysis of Reed's art. The critical approach combines psychoanalysis, gender theory, and the analysis of form. Archival research is also relied on to clarify Reed's relations with his creative team, financial backers and others. Films examined include Bank Holiday, A Girl Must Live, Odd Man Out, The Fallen Idol, The Third Man, Night Train to Munich, The Way Ahead, Outcast of the Islands, Trapeze and Oliver!. ;

        The Winter's Tale

        by Judith Dunbar, Jim Bulman, Carol Chillington Rutter

        This illuminating study of The Winter's Tale in performance in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries contributes to understanding the growth during that time of high critical esteem forwhat is now one of Shakespeare's frequently performed plays. Writing about performance as a richly collaborative living art, the author learns from and gives voice to the work of actors, directors, designers and other theatre professionals whose labor and interpretive discoveries have made it possible for audiences to experience the play's multiple potentialities in the theatre. She does this in part by citing from her interviews with directors like Trevor Nunn and Peter Hall and with actors engaged in some of the most significant twentieth-century productions of The Winter's Tale. Dunbar connects her scholarly research, including fresh use of materials in theatrical archives, to her direct experience of those productions she has able to see in performance and, at times, to see develop in rehearsal. Her in-depth analysis of selected significant twentieth-century productions, including cross-cultural productions of The Winter's Tale by the Royal Dramatic Theatre of Sweden (directed by Ingmar Bergman), and the Maly Drama Theatre of Europe, in St. Petersburg (directed by Declan Donnellan), explores how theatre artists have approached the play's most crucial theatrical and interpretive challenges. The book's last chapter, by distinguishedtheatre scholar and performance critic Carol Chillington Rutter, contributes a richly layered and highly engaging comparative analysis of eight of the most important recent British productions of the play. Dunbar makes a significant contribution to understanding The Winter's Tale which will be of great interest to scholars, teachers, and students of Shakespeare, to theatre lovers, and to all involved in productions of the play. ;

        Tourism, heritage and commodification of non-human animals

        a post-humanist reflection

        by Álvaro López-López, Gino Jafet Quintero Venegas, Carol Kline, Tomas Arias, Jean Azcatl Pineda, Alicia Mariana Penélope Castro Pérez, Bobbie Chew Bigby, Émilie Crossley, Johan Edelheim, Georgina Flores, Carolin Funck, Leonardo Garavito-González, Yulei Guo, Jes Hooper, Brenda Martínez Velasco, Alejandro Morales, Gustavo Ortiz-Millán, Mateo Nicolás Rico Medina, Jorge Iván Ruiz Barrera, Javed Salim, Estephania Sepúlveda Perdomo, Rie Usui, David A. Varela-Trejo, Nusrat Yasmeen

        Heritage is a social construction rooted in modern and contemporary societies. It is commonly a positive assessment of many elements of the physical and human environment (e.g. ecosystems and landscapes, monuments, customs, gender norms, religious practices, gastronomy, and livelihoods). Heritage and tourism are strongly related to each other in that heritage gives rise to tourist attractions and activities, and tourism enhances the designation of heritage sites. Non-human animals (hereafter 'animals') are present as implicit or explicit heritage elements through multiple tourist environments: animals may be themselves the heritage focus of tourist interest (visual arts, gastronomy, as charismatic and distinguished beings, as part of festivities or rituals), or it may be that animals are agents involved in heritage tourist environments such as working animals or in recreational activities. A post-humanist perspective the moral valuation of equality between humans and other animals demands that both are sentient beings and self-aware of their pain and pleasure. Thus, the involvement of animals as heritage elements by themselves or as an element of tourist consumption in heritage sites implies their commodification and lack of agency. As such, these practices are usually unethical, since they threaten the animals' primary interests: not to suffer, not to feel pain and to be able to live their freedom. This book contains chapters that reveal both the unethical interactions between humans and animals within heritage tourism, and those that show experiences in which efforts are made to minimize damage within the commercialization of animals involved as heritage themselves. It will be of interest to postgraduate students, academics, NGOs and tourism planners.

        Einfach Kafka

        by Franz Kafka, Peter Höfle

        Kafka? Würde mich interessieren, hab' sogar schon mal was von ihm gelesen, ist mir aber zu schwer und macht obendrein depressiv … Wir versprechen: Jeder, der bisher so dachte, wird die Lektüre dieses Lese- und Einführungsbuchs als Kafka-Fan beenden! Seine bedeutendsten Erzählungen sind hier enthalten, leichtverständlich eingeleitet und in Kafkas Biographie eingeordnet. Dazu gibt es sorgfältig ausgewählte kürzere Texte, Tagebuchnotizen, Briefe und anderes mehr, das uns auch den Menschen Kafka näherbringt, der gar nicht so verschroben war, wie das Klischee es will, sondern ein humorvoller, warmherziger Mann, der sich der Qualität seiner Literatur bei aller Bescheidenheit durchaus bewußt war.

        Popular protest in late-medieval Europe

        Italy, France and Flanders

        by Samuel Kline Cohn

        The documents in this stimulating volume span from 1245 to 1424 but focus on the 'contagion of rebellion' from 1355 to 1382 that followed in the wake of the plague. They comprise a diversity of sources and cover a variety of forms of popular protest in different social, political and economic settings. Their authors range across a wide political and intellectual horizon and include revolutionaries, the artistocracy, merchants and representatives from the church. They tell gripping and often gruesome stories of personal and collective violence, anguish, anger, terror, bravery, and foolishness. Of over 200 documents presented here, most have been translated into English for the first time, providing students and scholars with a new opportunity to compare social movements across Europe over two centuries, allowing a re-evaluation of pre-industrial revolts, the Black Death and its consequences for political culture and action. This book will be essential reading for those seeking to better understand popular attitudes and protest in medieval Europe.

        Charles Dickens

        Little People, Big Dreams. Deutsche Ausgabe

        by María Isabel Sánchez Vegara, Isobel Ross, Silke Kleemann

        Der kleine Charles war eine Leseratte, Bücher verschlang er wie andere ein Stück Brot. Aber seine Familie war bettelarm, und so musste er mit zwölf die Schule verlassen und in der Fabrik arbeiten. Nun erfand er selbst Geschichten, sie handelten von Menschen, die das Beste aus ihrem Leben machten. So wie er, der – inzwischen Angestellter in einer Kanzlei – Fortsetzungsgeschichten für Zeitungen schrieb, die man ihm aus den Händen riss. Noch heute werden seine Geschichten landauf, landab gelesen. Allen voran die Weihnachtsgeschichte, aber auch die Geschichte von Oliver Twist, einem Waisenjungen, der auf der Straße lebte. War es ein bisschen auch seine eigene Geschichte? Little People, Big Dreams erzählt von den beeindruckenden Lebensgeschichten großer Menschen: Jede dieser Persönlichkeiten, ob Philosophin, Forscherin oder Sportler, hat Unvorstellbares erreicht. Dabei begann alles, als sie noch klein waren: mit großen Träumen.

        by Charles Dickens, Flix

        Ebenezer Scrooge ist ein Geizkragen. Er behandelt seine Mitarbeiter schlecht, ist hartherzig gegenüber seinen Schuldnern und hat für seine Mitmenschen außer Misstrauen nichts übrig. Auch an Weihnachten – für ihn ein wahrlich überflüssiges Fest – sitzt er am liebsten in seinem Büro und zählt Geld. Eines Heiligabends wird er von den Geistern der vergangenen, gegenwärtigen und zukünftigen Weihnachtsfeste heimgesucht. Sie zeigen ihm das Glück, das er durch seine Habgier und Selbstsucht versäumt hat, aber auch das jämmerliche Dasein, das er einsam fristen wird, falls er sein Leben nicht ändert. Detektivgeschichten

        Aus dem Englischen von Franz Franzius

        by Charles Dickens, Franz Franzius

        Charles Dickens wurde am 7. Februar 1812 in Landport, England als zweites von acht Kindern geboren. Er wuchs in ärmlichen Familienverhältnissen auf und lernte schon früh die Erfahrung von Hunger und Not kennen, als der Vater in Schuldhaft kam. Charles mußte für die Versorgung der Familie aufkommen und arbeitete, wie zahlreiche andere Kinder auch, in einer Lagerhalle und als Hilfsarbeiter in einer Fabrik. Nachdem die widrigsten Zeiten überstanden waren, setzte er mit vierzehn Jahren seinen Schulbesuch fort und arbeitete später als Schreiber bei einem Rechtsanwalt und als Zeitungsjournalist. Mit seiner Skizzensammlung Sketches by Boz (1836) und The Pickwick Papers (1837) hatte Dickens überraschend Erfolg und wurde schnell zu einem der bekanntesten Autoren Englands. Später erlangte er auch große Bekanntheit in den USA. Dickens erste Romane erschienen alle als Fortsetzungsgeschichten in Zeitungen, so auch eines seiner bekanntesten Werke, Oliver Twist (1837). Dickens war Herausgeber der Tageszeitung Daily News und der Zeitschrift Household Words. Neben der Schriftstellerei verdiente er sich sein Geld mit Lese- und Vortragsreisen in England und den USA. A Christmas Carol (1843), gehörte dabei zu seinem festen Leseprogramm. Charles Dickens starb am 9. Juni 1870 in Kent.
