Terence Fisher is best known as the director who made most of the classic Hammer horrors - including The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula and The Devil Rides Out. But there is more to Terence Fisher than Hammer horror. In a busy twenty-five-year career, he directed fifty films, not just horrors but also thrillers, comedies, melodramas and science-fiction. This book offers an appreciation of all of Fisher's films and also gives a sense of his place in British film history. Looking at Fisher's career as a whole not only underlines his importance as a film-maker but also casts a new, interesting light on the areas in which he worked - Gainsborough melodrama, the 1950s B film, 1960s science-fiction and, of course, Hammer, one of the most successful independent film companies in the history of British cinema.

Noam Chomskys Buch »Reflexionen über die Sprache« (= stw 185) stellt eine Zusammenfassung der sprachphilosophischen Kontroverse zwischen Empirismus und Rationalismus und zwischen Semantik und Pragmatik dar. Es präsentiert aber auch einen neuen Entwicklungsstand in der Kontroverse darum, ob die Syntax unabhängig von der Semantik operieren kann. Chomsky führt in diesem Buch die bereits 1973 in den »Conditions of Transformation« entwickelte Spurentheorie ein und motiviert diese sowohl aus empirischen Gründen der Sprachbeschreibung als auch mit kognitiven Argumenten sowie mit Beobachtungen aus dem Prozeß des Spracherwerbs. Diese Theorie stellt eine starke Revision der bekannten Annahmen Chomskys dar. In den »Reflexionen über die Sprache« liefert Chomsky sozusagen »nur« den konzeptuellen Rahmen der neuen Spurentheorie. Helen Leuningers Arbeit diskutiert nun die methodologischen und empirischen Fragen, die sich aus dieser neuen Theorie ergeben, und stellt sie in den forschungs- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang, aus dem sie entstanden sind.

An historical account, the book combines detailed archival research with analyses of key programmes, from Mystery and Imagination and Dark Shadows, to The Woman in White and Twin Peaks, and uncovers an aspect of television drama history which has, until now, remained critically unexplored. While some have seen television as too literal or homely a medium to successfully present Gothic fictions, Gothic television argues that the genre, in its many guises, is, and has always been, well-suited to television as a domestic medium, given the genre's obsessions with haunted houses and troubled families. This book will be of interest to lecturers and students across a number of disciplines including television studies, Gothic studies, and adaptation studies, as well as to the general reader with an interest in the Gothic, and in the history of television drama.

Born into a civil service family in India in 1907, Helen Muspratt was a lifelong communist, a member of the Cambridge intellectual milieu of the 1930s, and a working mother at a time when such a role was unusual for women of her class. She was also a pioneering photographer, creating an extraordinary body of work in many different styles and genres. In partnership with Lettice Ramsey she made portraits of many notable figures of the 1930s in the fields of science and culture. Her experimental photography, using techniques such as solarisation and multiple exposure, bears comparison with the innovations of Man Ray and Lee Miller. This book reproduces some of Helen Muspratt's most important photographic images, including documentary records of the Soviet Union and the Welsh valleys.
