Die Reisen nach Schottland erschienen bereits im Jahre 1775 in der vorliegenden Übersetzung, wurden aber danach nie mehr neu aufgelegt. Daß im 20. Jahrhundert keine neue Übersetzung erschien, ist unter anderem Boswell zuzuschreiben. Er hatte mit seinem »Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides« (1785) eine konventionelle Beschreibung dieser Reise geliefert, deren persönlich-subjektive Note wohl eher ein breites Leserinteresse ansprach als der vielschichtige und intellektuell anspruchsvollere Text Johnsons.
