Elizabeth von Arnim wurde am 30. August 1866 bei Sydney als Mary Anette Beauchamp geboren und wuchs in England auf. Sie war eine Cousine von Katherine Mansfield, mit der sie in späteren Jahren bis zu deren Tod 1923 auch eine enge Freundschaft verband. Mit 24 Jahren heiratete Elizabeth den preußischen Grafen Henning August von Arnim-Schlagenthin und lebte in Berlin und auf dem Familiengut Nassenheide in Pommern, wo auch ihr erster Roman Elizabeth und ihr Garten (1898) entstand. Als die Familie in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten geriet, mußte das Gut verkauft werden. 1908 trennte sich das Ehepaar. Elizabeth von Arnim kehrte mit den Kindern nach England zurück. Die darauffolgenden Jahre bis 1913 verbrachte Elizabeth von Arnim meist in der Schweiz und in Großbritannien an der Seite von Herbert George Wells. 1916 ehelichte sie Frank Russell, 2. Earl Russell, und Bruder von Bertrand Russell. Die Ehe dauerte bis 1919. Elizabeth von Arnim lebte fortan in Großbritannien; Italien und schließlich in Südfrankreich, 1939 emigrierte sie in die USA. Sie starb am 9. Februar 1941 in Charleston / South Carolina.

The tourism industry and the tourists it serves can exert major influences on host communities at a number of levels. On the one hand, tourism can preserve cultures, resurrect forgotten traditions and prevent cultural stagnation. On the other hand, tourism can challenge existing values, social norms, traditions and behaviour, and this can lead to situations of conflict. In extreme cases, resistance or violence can be the result. For the majority of the time, it would seem that as long as tourism delivers the economic and social benefits it frequently promises, problems are often tolerated and some measure of conflict is accepted. However, whenever tourism brings cultures together, whether freely or forced, a range of complex issues are invoked such as the nature of cultural identity, social and economic power relations, legal and moral rights and management responsibilities. This book examines the changing relationships between tourism and host cultures and explores the reasons why and how conflicts emerge, in a series of detailed case studies from many parts of the globe including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Nepal, Tunisia, Spain, Peru, and Greece. Initiatives and good practices are highlighted whereby conflict can be replaced by consensus and situations improved through effective management. This book is essential reading for tourism industry professionals and students and researchers in anthropology, sociology and geography.

A career officer in the U.S. Foreign Service, Priscilla Clapp served as U.S. chargé d’affaires and chief of mission in Burma (Myanmar) from June 1999 to August 2002. After retiring from the Foreign Service, she has continued to follow events in Burma closely and wrote a paper for the United States Institute of Peace entitled “Building Democracy in Burma,” published on the Institute’s Web site in July 2007 as Working Paper 2. In this Special Report, the author draws heavily on her Working Paper to establish the historical context for the Saffron Revolution, explain the persistence of military rule in Burma, and speculate on the country’s prospects for political transition to democracy. The political transition that began in Myanmar with the elections of 2010 was heavily planned by military leaders to gradually move toward democratization while retaining many of the authoritarian structures of the previous government during the transition. As Myanmar’s success has attracted great interest and support from the international community, this study analyzes the elements that brought the transition about and the issues that threaten to arrest and complicate it in the present, to draw lessons that might apply to other countries undergoing transitions to democracy.
