        Insects on Palms

by Forrest W Howard, Robin Giblin-Davis, David Moore, Reynaldo G Abad

Palms constitute one of the largest botanical families, and include some of the world’s most important economic plants. They are also unequalled as outdoor and indoor ornamental plants, and include many species that are essential components of the ecosystems of tropical and other warm regions. This book reviews the inter-relationships between palms and insects, emphasising the similarities in different world regions. The host plants, distribution, and bionomics of representative insects are discussed according to their feeding sites on palms (foliage, flowers, fruits, and stems) and their taxonomic groups. Host and distribution records for the most extensively represented insect families on palms are tabulated. Pest management and field techniques are also covered. This book is recommended reading for tropical biologists and agriculturalists, including entomologists, horticulturists and tropical ecologists as well as palm nursery growers, managers and enthusiasts.

        Atrito

        by Reynaldo Jiménez

        Poetic Licence

        by Kevin Price

An explosive political thriller novel pitching people-smuggling, corruption and murder against the boundaries of truth and freedom.   '... a block of shadow pushes against a diffusing moonlight, the golden halo spreads out into the vineyards from its sides and drains into the night like blood on a carpet'   Art Lazaar is a writer with a poetic licence. In short, it secretly puts him in service to a mysterious government agency. As a result, he is assigned to doubling as an academic, but his poetic licence also ties him to a past he can't escape. And when a figure from that same past calls him, he must act. First, to protect a young asylum seeker running from those who murdered her brother. And secondly, to find the murderers. It's not a call he can refuse.   The call as much as guarantees Lazaar stumbles into a murky world of corruption. It leads to threats of arrest, kidnap and torture. As a result, he is left for dead. The situation grows ever more dire as suspects disappear, die, or leave the country in the nick of time. In the end, his choices come down to the only weapon in his arsenal ...   A meticulously crafted political thriller novel.   Poetic Licence's spellbinding and suspenseful plot, with its complex web of characters, thrusts the reader into a world deeply etched in our psyches. It leaves no doubt as to who is to blame and where the responsibility lies. The politics of truth and freedom do not rest easily in this funny, angry and endlessly entertaining novel. Alan Carter and David Whish-Wilson attest to it.   Poetic Licence dives headlong into a  world of political and institutional corruption, exposing the vast gulf between the words and deeds of the powerful, between the lives of the haves and have-nots, and the casual mistreatment of asylum seekers. Written in terse, propulsive prose, Poetic Licence is a clever thriller that won't disappoint. David Whish-Wilson   A vividly-realised Fremantle is the apt setting for this zeitgeisty thriller. Hunter is an original and kick-ass protagonist.Alan Carter   A smart and utterly distinctive slice of Ozzie-noir, set in Fremantle where "evil breeds like the flies on a sheep's arse."

        (Hyper)Masculinity in a feminized context

        by Richardson, S.

"Scott Richardson gives us a finely detailed experiential account of how gender and teaching are woven together in public schools. Through his own memories and the narrativized experiences of his research subjects, Richardson demonstrates both the institutional benefits associated with being male and the fragility of masculinity. Membership in the “Boys’ Club” of hypermasculinity requires constant checking, surveillance, and choices that fit within the narrow range of dominant masculinity (so well detailed by R. W. Connell). Richardson’s causal style parallels the ease with which men in leadership and teaching positions articulate their allegiance to gender norms and one another, and in effect, set critique of such gender norms above comment: it’s just the way things are done." - Cris Mayo, Associate Professor of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership & Gender and Women’s Studies, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Faculty Director of the Odyssey Project; author of Disputing the Subject of Sex: Sexuality and Public School Controversies. "Scott Richardson has written a provocative work that lifts the veil and explores a secret space hiding in plain sight in every school in America. The taboo is gender, and for teachers who often feel bound and gagged, unseen and unheard, Richardson’s efforts offer a life-altering experience that will change the way we understand classrooms. eleMENtary School: (hyper)masculinity in a Feminized Context is both forbidden fruit and a small masterpiece." - William Ayers, Distinguished Professor of Education and Senior University Scholar, University of Illinois at Chicago (retired); founder of the Center for Youth and Society; author of To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher, and co-author-editor of The Handbook of Social Justice in Education with T. Quinn & D. Stovall. "eleMENtary School" tells the important and untold story of teachers’ enactments of normative masculinity. Through vivid and compelling accounts of male teachers like Dru, Alex and Owen we learn about how contemporary definitions of masculinity prevent teachers from fulfilling their potential as educators, as colleagues and as role models. Only by reading carefully a documented analysis like these can we begin to critically examine the way in which we can encourage male teachers to develop what Scott Richardson calls an “ethic of care,” that supports gender equality, rather than allowing them to continue to engage in damaging practices of normative masculinity. - CJ Pascoe, Assistant Professor of Sociology; author of Dude You’re a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School and Anas, Mias and Wannas: Identity and Community in a Pro-ana Subculture. "Scott Richardson's eleMENtary School: (hyper)masculinity in a Feminized Context is a remarkable innovative contribution to teacher lore, narrative inquiry, and gender studies. Readers cannot experience this book without pondering, questioning, rethinking, and reconstructing their perspective on education and its socio-sexual and political milieu. Surely, that is one of the most laudable consequences of a scholarly contribution in education. I urge educators at all levels to let this book have impact on their outlooks." - William H. Schubert, Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Curriculum & Instruction, University of Illinois at Chicago; former Director the Teacher Lore Project; co-author-editor of Teacher Lore: Learning from Our Own Experience with W. Ayers, and author of Love, Justice and Education. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Scott Richardson is an Assistant Professor of Educational Foundations, Women’s Studies faculty member, and co-founder of the Sexuality & Gender Institute at Millersville University.

9 1/2 Years Behind the Green Door, A Memoir

A Mitchell Brothers Stripper Remembers Her Lover Artie Mitchell, Hunter S. Thompson, and the Killing That Rocked San Francisco

        by Simone Corday

It's the 80's and we are behind the scenes at the Mitchell Brothers O'Farrell Theater, which gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson called "the Carnegie Hall of public sex in America." The theater and its steamy live shows are a countercultural venue for celebrities, and for San Francisco politicians and journalists.  They are drawn by the beautiful strippers and the backroom hospitality of their outrageous porn king hosts, Artie and Jim Mitchell--who directed the groundbreaking porn film, Behind the Green Door, starring Marilyn Chambers. Simone Corday, who danced at the Mitchell Brothers Theater for nearly a decade and was a girlfriend of the late Artie Mitchell, shares her story and her insights. She is the only woman insider to write about this insular but captivating world during this period, when she was close to the impulsive Mitchells, and a friend of the theater's honorary Night Manager Hunter Thompson. Corday’s background of having an MA in English, along with her honesty, irreverent sense of humor, and keen focus as an observer, make this a delicious expose. Corday gives vivid accounts of three Mitchell Brothers films she took part in. They include the disastrous Behind the Green Door, the Sequel, a grandiose safe-sex epic with characters from Greek mythology, and their documentary on Hunter Thompson, titled The Crazy Never Die. She shares memories of her unconventional, passionate relationship with “Party Artie” Mitchell. His affectionate personal side, along with his love for his children are remembered fondly. His taste for cocaine and advancing alcoholism—that led him to disappear on binges with a succession of young dancers—is also recaptured, as well as his volatile temper, his impish sense of fun, and his charismatic, macho persona. Corday sheds light on Jim Mitchell's motives for killing Artie, and his murder trial. She reflects on her experience in the sex industry, and on her relationship with a notorious club owner. From the fun she had performing in the O’Farrell’s spotlight as the theater’s nemesis, then-San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein, to her heartbreak visiting Artie’s grave a few short years later, this is a sensational ride.

AND THEN THAT'S ENOUGH: Manifesto of a Black Italian Female

        by Espérance Hakuzwimana Ripanti

After a life spent answering other people's questions and curiosities, about her origins, her skin, her opinions, Espérance Hakuzwimana Ripanti uses writing as a tool to regain her space and expose herself, reveal herself – in her own way, in her own terms, on her own conditions. "And Then Enough is the story of how I came out of my room making real everything I found in books and over the years. A hero's call to which I responded in my own way, never forgetting my story, which began in Rwanda, and the limits found on the streets of Italy. The story of myself, which I only wanted to read, and of a summer that instead changed my life." But it is also the story of her traveling companions, of the experiences that marked her the most, of the protagonists who shared the front lines with her. An essay, a biography, a ballad, a manifesto: the story of her struggle against prejudice, and finally the search for solutions.

        Grounded at Kai Tak

Chinese Aircraft Impounded in Hong Kong, 1949–1952

        by Malcolm Merry

Set against the backdrop of regional and international post–Second World War tensions, Grounded at Kai Tak is the most comprehensive account of the complex legal struggle for ownership of 71 airplanes belonging to the two main Chinese airlines, which were stranded at Kai Tak airfield in Hong Kong at the end of the Chinese civil war. The resulting contest for possession of them took place in the courts and among politicians and diplomats on three continents. In the process, the struggle became entangled with the anti-communist policies of the United States in the emerging ‘Cold War’, British hopes for restoration of her pre-war commercial position in China, disagreements between nations about recognition of the new government in Peking, and the delicate balance that the colonial government of Hong Kong had to keep to preserve that colony’s interests. Merry tells the tale of this legal saga by weaving together archival documents and news reports of the day, revealing the international alignments that emerged from the aftermath of the wars and the colourful cast of actors that influenced the outcome of the dispute. This struggle would go on to become one of the leading public international law cases on the recognition of governments at the time.
