This is the first book to examine the relationship between English nationalism, Brexit and 'the Anglosphere' - a politically-contested term used to denote English-speaking countries sharing cultural and historical roots with the UK. In the aftermath of the UK's EU referendum some pointed to a 'revolt' of those 'left behind' by globalisation. Ben Wellings argues instead that Brexit was and is an elite project, firmly situated within the tradition of an expansive English nationalism. Far from being parochial 'Little Englanders', elite Brexiteers sought to replace the European Union with trade and security alliances between 'true friends' and 'traditional allies' in the Anglosphere. Brexit was thus reassuringly presented as a giant leap into the known. As the UK's future relationship with the rest of the world is negotiated, the need to understand this 'English moment' has never been more pressing.

Brink's provocative biography shows that Spenser was not the would-be court poet whom Karl Marx's described as 'Elizabeth's arse-kissing poet'. In this readable and informative account, Spenser is depicted as the protégé of a circle of London clergymen, who expected him to take holy orders. Brink shows that the young Spenser was known to Alexander Nowell, author of Nowell's Catechism and Dean of St. Paul's. Significantly revising the received biography, Brink argues that that it was Harvey alone who orchestrated Familiar Letters (1580). He used this correspondence to further his career and invented the portrait of Spenser as his admiring disciple. Contextualising Spenser's life by comparisons with Shakespeare and Sir Walter Ralegh, Brink shows that Spenser shared with Sir Philip Sidney an allegiance to the early modern chivalric code. His departure for Ireland was a high point, not an exile.

Die von Yigael Yadin in den 1960er Jahren geleiteten Ausgrabungen legten den festungsartigen Palast von Herodes frei, wo jüdische Rebellen den letzten Aufstand gegen die mächtigen römischen Legionen in den Jahren 66 bis 73 n. Chr. durchführten. Gemäß der Geschichtsschreibung des zeitgenössischen Geschichtsschreibers Josephus Flavius begingen die Verteidiger einen Massenselbstmord, um sich nicht ergeben zu müssen. Hunderte Freiwillig aus aller Welt nahmen an diesen Ausgrabungen teil. Verschiedene Kapitel behandeln die architektonischen Überreste und kleinen Funde aus den herodianischen, zelotischen und römischen Perioden, die römischen Wälle und die Überreste der byzantinischen Periode. Tausende Artefakte einschließlich Manuskripten wurden bei den Ausgrabungen gefunden. Masada ist nicht nur ein archäologischer Fundort, sondern auch ein Symbol – hauptsächlich, jedoch nicht ausschließlich, für zeitgenössische Israeliten. Der Briefwechsel zwischen dem Schriftsteller Schalom Ben-Chorin und dem Religionshistoriker Hans-Joachim Schoeps, der sich über vier Jahrzehnte (1934-1979) hinzieht, kreist im wesentlichen um ein Thema: Jüdische Theologie. In politischen Fragen Antipoden - empfand Schoeps seine preußische Herkunft als Schicksal, das seine Existenz unwandelbar formte, bekannte sich Schalom Ben-Chorin frühzeitig zum Zionismus und zog daraus seine Konsequenzen -, verband beide die Erkenntnis der Notwendigkeit jüdischer Theologie in unserer Zeit. Schoeps, Franz Rosenzweig folgend, ging von der Bejahung der Galuth (Diaspora) aus, während Ben-Chorin die Verwirklichung des Judentums primär in Israel sah und noch heute sieht. Beiden ging es um die Aufzeigung der Demarkationslinien des jüdischen Glaubens, von dem sie meinten, daß er aus der Bewußtseinslage des heutigen Menschen, in Konfrontation mit dem Komplex der Überlieferung, gewonnen werden sollte.

The debate on the Norman Conquest is still ongoing. Because of the great interest that has always been shown in the subject of conquest and its aftermath, interpretations have been numerous and conflicting; students bewildered by controversies may find this book a useful guide through the morass of literature. In the medieval period writers were still deeply involved in the legal and linguistic consequences of the Norman victory. Later the issues became direcly relevant to debates about constitutional rights; the theory of a "Norman yoke" provided first a call for revolution and, by the 19th century, a romantic vision of a lost Saxon paradise. When history became a subject for academic study controversies still raged round such subjects as Saxon versus Norman institutions. These have gradually been replaced in a broader social setting where there is more room for consensus. Interest has now moved to such subjects as peoples and races, frontier societies, women's studies and colonialism. Changing perspectives have shown the advantage of studying a period from the late 10th to the early 13th century rather than one beginning in 1066. ;
