        WE BELIEVE THAT THE GOOD TRIUMPHS Where did the idea to make children’s educational tales that are different from the rest come from? One day, we decided to create a character who would be loved by thousands of children. We looked at our youngest and realised how much depends on us, adults.   It dawned on us that if we bring up our children to become good and noble people, there is a big chance that they will do the same in the future. They will pass the love they got from us on to their children, who will then do the same, and so on…

        Over the Hill Together

        by Da Chuzhe

        From the fifth year of their marriage, Sumiko had to receive treatment in hospital for the acute pain caused by multiple rheumatoid arthritis. From that time on the disease had seized her. From 1982, Sumiko had to lie in the bed or rely on a wheelchair for the significant dysfunction of the upper limbs and the paralysis of the lower limbs, so she had to let her husband see to her daily life. And Oochuje took care of her basically all by himself unless he had a business trip and he would hire a care worker. This illustrated book elaborately depicts the story between them, including how they met and fell in love with each other during childhood, their daily conversations, their poems as well as their relentless fighting against disease. At the final part of the book, it mainly records the last thirty-three days from December 1997 to January 1998 during which the couple spent together until Sumiko had passed away. The words of the book is selected and the drawings simple yet profound through which one will be deeply touched for the deep and unchangeable love. “Over the hill” in common sense is an expression for death, but it means a whole new world for Oochuje and Sumiko where they would also walk side by side. Their love and cherish for each other was well beyond life and death for they never ceased to bring happiness for each other. And their love story has also enriched the world with pure beauty and wonder of love.

        The British working class in postwar film

        by Philip Gillett

        An incidental pleasure of watching a film is what it tells us about the society in which it is made. Using a sociological model, The British working class in postwar film looks at how working-class people were portrayed in British feature films in the decade after the Second World War. Though some of the films examined are well known, others have been forgotten and deserve reassessment. Original statistical data is used to assess the popularity of the films with audiences. With its interdisciplinary approach and the avoidance of jargon, this book seeks to broaden the approach to film studies. Students of media and cultural studies are introduced to the skills of other disciplines, while sociologists and historians are encouraged to consider the value of film evidence in their own fields. This work should appeal to all readers interested in social history and in how cinema and society works.

        Rural SME Business Management

        The Human Factor

        by Peter L Nuthall

        This book is about managerial ability and how it might be assessed and improved, and it focuses on rural Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Traditionally, business studies have seldom covered the manager as a person and a decision maker in any great depth. Personnel management, production economics, financing, operations analysis techniques, etc. tend to be emphasized but the personal attributes of the decision makers have as much influence on success as the rules of good decision making. This book aims to correct this imbalance. The human characteristics of managers that define how a manager operates are explored, as are their impact on managerial ability. The details of the competencies a manager must possess are also presented and discussed as well as potential detracting biases. The book concludes with methods and techniques covering personal characteristic changes and associated managerial improvement. The concepts and conclusions of this book are all based on a body of research, excerpts of which are quoted in the text, drawn from the rich sources available in the international literature. Case studies describing successful managers and management advisors are used throughout. · First book which specifically focuses on human factors and decision making for SME managers. · Introduces new research specifically on the quantification of intuition, the primary decision making method used in SMEs. · Contains essential material required by researchers of decision making processes, business studies teachers, and extension workers from the world of SME business.

        Working towards the Führer

        Essays in honour of Sir Ian Kershaw

        by Anthony McElligott, Tim Kirk

        Working towards the Führer brings together leading historians writing on the Third Reich, in honour of Sir Ian Kershaw, whose own work, along with that of the contributors to this volume has done much to challenge and change our understanding of the way Nazi Germany functioned. Covering issues such as the legacy of the world wars, the female voter, propaganda, occupied lands, the judiciary, public opinion and resistance, this volume furthers the debate on how Nazi Germany operated. Gone are the post-war stereotypes of a monolithic state driven forward by a single will towards war and genocide. Instead there is a more complex picture of the regime and its actions, one that shows the instability of the dictatorship, its dependence on a measure of consent as well as coercion, which recognises the constraints on political action, the fickleness of popular attitudes and the ambiguous, ephemeral nature of acclamation and opposition alike. This is a remarkable collection of essays by leading historians in the field that will undoubtedly be welcomed by students and lecturers of German History. ;

        The Business of Plant Breeding

        Market led Approaches to Plant Variety Design in Africa

        by Gabrielle J Persley, Vivienne M Anthony, Rowland Chirwa, Agyemang Danquah, Erik Yirenky Danquah, Appolinaire Djikeng, Shimelis Hussein, Paul M. Kimani, Heather Merk, Ivan Rwomushana, Jean Claude Rubyogo, Jonathan Shoham, Pangirayi Tongoona, Nasser Yao

        The Business of Plant Breeding is the result of a study on demand-led plant variety design for markets in Africa, sharing best practices from private and public sector breeding programmes worldwide that are applicable to improving tropical crops in Africa. Beginning with an overview of the principles of demand-led plant breeding, the book then discusses aspects such as understanding the demands of clients and markets in rural and urban areas, foresight in setting product profiles and breeding targets, and determining breeding strategy and stage plans. It also covers measuring success and making the business case for future investments in breeding programmes that will deliver new varieties to meet market demands. The book: - Brings together the experience of plant breeders around the world, representing universities, national plant breeding programmes, regional and international agricultural research institutes, and private seed companies, showcasing how to respond to changing market demands; - Provides educational resource materials within each chapter; - Includes templates for use as planning tools by plant breeding programs for determining priority traits that meet market demands. An important read for professionals and students of plant breeding and genetics, this book is also a useful resource for anyone interested in developing and disseminating new, market-led technologies to increase productivity and profitability in tropical agriculture. The study was sponsored by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, the Crawford Fund and the Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture, and managed by the University of Queensland.

        At the Very Bottom of the System

        How migrant workers ensure prosperity for us

        by Sascha Lübbe

        The author reveals structural problems and offers solutions – an urgently necessary book, not least with a view to the acute shortage of skilled workers 450,000 migrant workers toll on German construction sites, work in sometimes inhumane conditions in meat factories or as truck drivers, and let’s not forget the hordes of cleaners in German hotels and companies. They are systematically exploited and cheated out of their wages. Sascha Lübbe exposes the octopus-like network of partly criminal companies in a shadowy world where the boundary between the legal and the illegal is blurred. In his evocative book with interviews with those aff ected, he reveals how a parallel system has established itself in the German working world, but also how those affected resist.

        Has devolution worked?

        The verdict from policy-makers and the public

        by John Curtice, Bed Seyd

        Devolution to Scotland and Wales represented the most fundamental reform of the British state for almost a century. Ten years on, how successful has the reform been? Drawing on the views of citizens, elected representatives and interest groups in Scotland and Wales, this book provides an answer. The book is based on a wide ranging programme of research, involving dedicated surveys and interviews across Scotland, Wales and England. The results provide important new evidence on how devolution has been seen to have performed. What are its perceived achievements? What are its shortcomings? Is the new devolution 'settlement' stable, or is there a demand for further reform? By bringing together perspectives from the public, members of the devolved legislatures and representatives of civil society, the book establishes a unique picture of where devolution in Britain stands today. The book is accessibly written, and contains a wide range of useful primary data. It is ideal for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying devolution in Britain, as well as for general readers with an interest in constitutional reform and territorial politics. ;
