The Classic of Mountains and Rivers, also known as Shan Hai Jing, has been regarded as a "strange book" since its appearance in China pre-Qin Dynasty. Also, it gives accounts of many folk legends of mythic geography, monsters, and witchcraft. No matter labeled as a book of geography, a book of history, or a book of strange stories, it is a Chinese ancient classic that deserves to be read over and over again. But as a book compiled about 2,500 to 3,000 years ago, its context and words are difficult to understand for modern readers. The Classic of Mountains and Rivers for Teenagers series is just designed to make this classic more understandable and readable. It illustrates the most essential parts of the Classic of Mountains and Rivers with simple words, animated illustrations, and interdisciplinary approaches, and introduces young readers to the understandings of Chinese ancestors on land and nature. Not only is it a book series for teenagers, but also an encyclopedia of traditional Chinese geography and culture for adults. The series contains three books, and A Thousand Miles of Mountains and Rivers is the first one. It briefly introduces the creation process and main contributors of the Classic of Mountains and Rivers, and tells stories about geography in ancient China including mountains, rivers, creatures, and minerals as well as the plain but vital spirit for scientific discovery of Chinese ancestors.

Theodor Herzl, geboren 1860 in Budapest, schrieb mit »Der Judenstaat« (1896) die entscheidende Abhandlung für die Gründung eines autonomen jüdischen Staatswesens. Das Buch war eine Abwehrreaktion gegen den in Europa sich verschärfenden Antisemitismus, den Herzl besonders als Paris-Korrespondent während der Dreyfus-Affäre erleben musste. Sechs Jahre später erschien sein Roman »Altneuland«, in dem er seine Ideen eines jüdischen Staates in Palästina literarisierte, reflektierte und modifizierte. Herzl schrieb die Utopie, »um zu zeigen, dass es keine ist«. In seinem Buch geht es nicht um Literatur oder Politik – es geht um beides gleichermaßen. Es changiert zwischen Roman und Leben, Imagination und Realisierung. Clemens Peck folgt Herzls Bewegung zwischen diesen beiden Polen – den Experimenten im Labor der Utopie. Er lotet die Leistungen des Romans vor dem Hintergrund des Utopie-Diskurses um 1900 erstmals ausführlich aus und gewinnt neue Einsichten nicht nur über den Roman, sondern auch über die schillernde Person des jüdischen Schriftstellers und Journalisten.

Women in exile in early modern Europe and the Americas addresses that lacuna through a wide-ranging geographical, chronological, social and cultural approach. Whether powerful, well-to-do or impoverished, exiled by force or choice, every woman faced the question of how to reconstruct her life in a new place. These essays focus on women's agency despite the pressures created by political, economic and social dislocation. Collectively, they demonstrate how these women from different countries, continents and status groups not only survived but also in many cases thrived. The years 2021 to 2030 have been designated as "The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration". Ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation efforts face unprecedented challenges, especially in developing countries and areas, such as the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region. This huge HKH region, which includes areas in eight separate countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, India, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan), is a biodiversity hotspot with a vast array of ecosystems, landscapes, peoples and cultures. It is known as one of 'the pulses of the world'. However, the HKH is also the world's largest and poorest mountain region, where landscapes and environments have been severely damaged as a result of climate change and human activities. Coordinating conservation and restoration policies, sharing knowledge and funds, and maintaining livelihoods are major challenges and are in urgent need of improvement. This book details the past and current ecological problems in the HKH region, and the threats and challenges that ecosystems and local people face. It pays special attention to developments of transformative adaptations and presents examples of sustainable conservation and ecological restoration management practices. Three primary questions are addressed: (1) Do the existing conservation strategies of international organizations and government policies really protect ecosystems and solve biodiversity problems? (2) Can these management measures be one-time solutions? and (3) What is the strategic framework and scenario prognosis for the future based on the historical trajectory of ecological conservation and restoration in the region? This book is essential reading for ecologists and conservation biologists involved in large-scale ecological restoration projects, along with practitioners, graduate students, policy makers and international development workers.
