From 1348 to 1350 Europe was devastated by an epidemic that left between a third and one half of the population dead. This source book traces, through contemporary writings, the calamitous impact of the Black Death in Europe, with a particular emphasis on its spread across England from 1348 to 1349. Rosemary Horrox surveys contemporary attempts to explain the plague, which was universally regarded as an expression of divine vengeance for the sins of humankind. Moralists all had their particular targets for criticism. However, this emphasis on divine chastisement did not preclude attempts to explain the plague in medical or scientific terms. Also, there was a widespread belief that human agencies had been involved, and such scapegoats as foreigners, the poor and Jews were all accused of poisoning wells. The final section of the book charts the social and psychological impact of the plague, and its effect on the late-medieval economy.

        Botched medications, malpractice, the transplant business: when doctors or pharmaceutical companies make mistakes or cross ethical boundaries, this often has serious consequences for patients. One example is thalidomide. Despite inadequate testing, the sleeping pill was marketed from 1957 to 1961, and caused a large number of pregnant women to give birth to children with severe deformities. Less well known, but no less scandalous, is the “Anti-D” affair in the former GDR, where, during 1978 and 1979, thousands of women and many children were infected with hepatitis C through contaminated immunoglobulins. This was not revealed until years later. This book presents 16 such cases – often the stuff of thrillers, but tragic at the same time. People who reach out for help, are instead deceived and harmed. All the more important are courageous and persistent patients and journalists, who have uncovered medical scandals, publicised them and taken the perpetrators to court. Without this, no-one would be learning from the mistakes.

        The author, a pediatrician, begins his book with a description of his vivid memories of suffering from a bad case of appendicitis as a young child, He proceeds to describe a series of serious illnesses and trauma that affected him in his adult life: a missed tumor in his jaw, a train accident resulting in major damage to his spine and nervous system, and then the unexpected discovery of leukemia, all of which test his endurance as a patient. But what Prof. Porter so vividly presents is the additional challenge faced when the doctor becomes the patient. While stressing the amazing advances in medical technology and science that saved his life on a number of occasions, he draws attention to the lack of empathy from the professionals felt so frequently during his medical trials. As a physician, he has been frequently expected to tolerate his problems and to be a braver warrior than the average patient, when in reality, in such situations the doctor is still just a patient. The author suggests that much of the solution lies within each of us, and that a positive approach to life and good social support can do much to help us through adversity. This book is not a textbook for the medical profession, but rather the narrative confession of an senior physician who has had to face multiple testing experiences from the viewpoint of the patient. Basil Porter is a pediatrician with years of experience in both academic medicine settings and health systems management. He is an emeritus professor of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Israel. In turn, the tension between the tradition in anthropology of examining cultural certitudes through ethnographic description and efforts to challenge dominant expressions of incertitude are explored.
