        Amadoca

        by Sofia Andrukhovych

        Mutilated beyond recognition in the combat in Eastern Ukraine, the protagonist of Amadoca makes it out alive, if only just. It’s too early to celebrate though: his injuries have caused complete amnesia. The man remembers neither his name nor his home town; not a single relative; not a fragment of his old life. At this point a woman finds him. Her love and patience can work miracles, reaching the deepest levels of memory and forgetting, bringing together discrete snippets of the maimed consciousness and weaving them together into the shared history. Amadoca was the largest lake in Europe that lay on the territory that is now Ukraine. First mentioned by Herodotus and faithfully recreated by medieval cartographers down the centuries it suddenly disappeared from accounts. How can large lakes, whole worlds or entire cultures disappears without a trace? And what is left behind in their wake? Are there paralels between Holocaust of East Europe’s Jews and the distruction of Ukrainian artists in Stalin’s Great Terror? Can one person’s forgetting reach several generations below ground? Are the signs and scars of maimed memories what really keeps us together? Can love and patience help to touch the mind of another human being?

        A loss of innocence?

        Television and Irish society, 1960–72

        by Robert Savage

        This book explores the evolution of Ireland's national television service during its first tumultuous decade, addressing how the medium helped undermine the conservative political, cultural and social consensus that dominated Ireland into the 1960s. It also traces the development of the BBC and ITA in Northern Ireland, considering how television helped undermine a state that had long governed without consensus. Using a wide array of new archival sources and extensive interviews Savage illustrates how an increasingly confident television service upset political, religious and cultural elites who were profoundly uncomfortable with the changes taking place around them. Savage argues that during this period television was not a passive actor, but an active agent often times aggressively testing the limits of the medium and the patience of governments. Television helped facilitate a process of modernisation that slowly transformed Irish society during the 1960s. This book will be essential for those interested in contemporary Irish political and cultural history and readers interested in media history, and cultural studies. ;

        Language and imagination in the Gawain poems

        by J. Anderson

        This major new literary study offers a fresh view of the significance of the famous group of fourteenth-century poems, 'Pearl', 'Cleanness', 'Patience' and 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight'. It is a comprehensive study which puts the poems themselves firmly at its centre, though it is always alert to relevant aspects of their literary and cultural context. John Anderson builds his discussions of the poems' ideas on an examination of the anonymous poet's superb Shakespeare-like language. He finds that the great fourteenth-century struggle, between religious and secular forces for control of men's minds, underlies all the poems. This title is the first in the new Manchester Medieval Literature series, which makes readability a priority. Accordingly, despite its wide range of reference and the radicalism of some of its leading ideas, this book is written in a jargon-free style designed to appeal to specialist, non-specialist and student readers alike.

        Charitable hatred

        Tolerance and intolerance in England, 1500–1700

        by Alexandra Walsham, Peter Lake, Anthony Milton, Jason Peacey, Alexandra Gajda

        Charitable Hatred offers a challenging new perspective on religious tolerance and intolerance in early modern England. Setting aside traditional models charting a linear progress from persecution to toleration, it emphasises instead the complex interplay between these two impulses in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The book examines the intellectual assumptions that underpinned attitudes towards religious minorities and the institutional structures and legal mechanisms by which they were both repressed and accommodated. It also explores the social realities of prejudice and forbearance, hostility and harmony at the level of the neighbourhood and parish. Simultaneously, it surveys the range of ways in which dissenting churches and groups responded and adapted to official and popular intolerance, investigating how the experience of suffering helped to forge sectarian identities. In analysing the consequences of the advancing pluralism of English society in the wake of the Reformation, this study illuminates the cultural processes that shaped and complicated the conditions of coexistence before and after the Act of Toleration of 1689. ;

        Neither use nor ornament

        A cultural biography of clutter and procrastination

        by Tracey Potts

        Neither use nor ornament is a book about personal productivity, told from the perspective of its obstacles: clutter and procrastination. It offers a challenge to the self-help promise of a clutter-free life, lived in a permanent state of efficiency and flow. The book reveals how contemporary projections of the good, productive life rely on images of failure. Riffing on the aphorism 'less is more' - a dominant refrain in present day productivity advice - it tells stories about streamlining, efficiency and tidiness over a time period of around 100 years. By focusing on the shadows of productivity advice, Neither use nor ornament seeks to unravel the moral narratives that hold individuals to account for their inefficiencies and muddles.

        The Delonix Regia Blossom

        by Peng Xuejun

        It has been four years since the author’s mother passed away in the special year of 2020. In writing this book, she intends to refresh her memory about her mother. The book vividly tells how the author’s mother strives for growing up in the context of a bad family background, from her childhood to fighting for a job to make a living after growing up, from her romantic love story with her husband to her deep affection for her three children amid the vagrant life. Readers are also able to witness mother’s passion for her career as a teacher and her care for her students, as well as learn how the author forbears sadness when taking record of her mother’s tenacious combat against disease on the sickbed. The whole story is permeated with pure and gentle love and a pleasant atmosphere, but in some chapters, it still gives out solemn, tragic, and powerful emotional strength. Telling the whole life of the author’s mother, the book also depicts that of her grandparents’ and maternal grandparents’ families, three generations in total, in the era back then.

        Zephyr

        Roman

        by Albert Ostermaier

        Paris 2002: Die Schauspielerin Marie Trintignant und Bertrand Cantat, Sänger der Rockband "Noir Désir", lassen sich als frisch Verliebte durch die Nächte treiben. Um sich nicht trennen zu müssen, begleitet er sie zu Dreharbeiten nach Vilnius. Sie spielt unter der Regie ihrer Mutter in einer Verfilmung des Lebens der Schriftstellerin Colette. Es kommt zu Eifersuchtsexzessen zwischen den beiden, er erschlägt sie und schläft umstandslos neben ihr ein. In einer Villa an der Côte d'Azur liegt Cathy auf dem Bett, sie scheint zu schlafen. Neben ihr Gilles, ihr Mann. Er hat den Auftrag zu einem Drehbuch über das Paar Marie-Bertrand. Gilles fällt es immer schwerer, zwischen Wirklichkeit und Fiktion zu unterscheiden, zwischen den Schnitten ins Herz und denen seines Filmscripts, er überblendet, was er wahrnimmt, mit dem, was er vor seinem inneren Kameraauge sieht. Sein Leben läuft wie ein Film an ihm vorüber. Ist er selbst auch ein Mörder, oder schreibt er sich diese Rolle nur zu? Albert Ostermaiers erster Roman ist ein faszinierendes Vexierspiel, erzählt im raschen Perspektivenwechsel, ein rasantes Gegenstück zum "Film Noir", ein dunkler Liebessong, dessen Rhythmus und Refrain den Leser in den Sog einer Geschichte ziehen.

        Michel Ezra Safra & Fils

        by Amnon Shamosh

        Michel Ezra Safra & FilsLa Saga d’une famille de banquiersAmnon Shamosh Michel Ezra Safra & Fils retrace la saga d'une famille écrite par le célèbre écrivain israélien, Amnon Shamosh. C'est une histoire semi autobiographique se déroulant à Alep en Syrie, lieu de naissance de l'auteur.Le livre décrit la vie, les luttes et la dispersion d'une famille juive syrienne aisée au long de trois générations successives, au milieu des années 1930. L'histoire de la famille Safra est celle de la société juive du Moyen Orient, ainsi que celle des valeurs fondées sur des traditions, constamment altérées par d'autres normes aussi bien circonstancielles qu'universelles.Secouée par les bouleversements locaux et mondiaux, la famille, avec à sa tête Michel et sa charmante épouse Linda, est chassée de sa ville d'origine Alep durant les émeutes qui ont éclaté en fin 1947, à la suite de résolution des Nations Unies accordant la création d'un Etat juif en Palestine. Michel, personnage doté d'un sens pratique, continue à diriger son empire financier. Son emprise sur ses enfants semble se relâcher, pourtant, il jouit toujours de leur respect et de leur amour. Rachmo, le fils aîné et héritier désigné, dirige la branche parisienne de l'affaire familiale, mais sa conduite comme homme de famille n'est pas conforme aux attentes de ses parents. Albert, le benjamin, abhorre les affaires et fuit le parcours qu'il est censé suivre. Il trouve une issue dans une activité sioniste clandestine, faisant aussi « passer » illégalement des Juifs en Palestine. Les cinq autres fils et filles de Safra émigrent en Europe, Amérique et Israël.Ce qui préoccupe le plus Michel, le dérange et le hante, n'est pas l'état de son empire financier, mais un grave « pêché » qu'il a commis. Lorsque la vieille synagogue d'Alep fut brûlée, Michel sauva les manuscrits de « Aram Tsova » et tenta de les préserver des flammes. Il sauva une partie de ce manuscrit sacré et inestimable, qu'il déposa dans un coffre-fort à Nice, en France. Bien que ce trésor soit mis à l'abri, Michel interprète les drames de sa famille comme une punition divine.Tout au long du roman, le lecteur suit la trace de Michel au cours de ses voyages à travers le monde, préoccupé par ses problèmes familiaux et ses difficultés professionnelles, accablé par une santé fragile et une conscience lourde. La vie de son fils Albert, devenu membre influant des implantations collectives en Israël, lui est tout à fait étrangère. La saga de la famille Ezra Safra, se termine lorsque Michel meurt le cœur brisé quelques jours après que son petit-fils soit tué lors de la guerre des Six Jours en 1967. Plus tard, Rachmo, qui fut mis dans la confidence du secret de son père, meurt d'une attaque cardiaque en apprenant que le manuscrit gardé à Nice a été dérobé. Linda accepte de rejoindre ses enfants en Israël, mais refuse d'habiter avec eux. Elle choisit de vivre une vie solitaire, entourée de ses photos et de souvenirs du passé.Michel Ezra Safra & Fils a été adapté pour le petit écran et ce feuilleton connut un grand succès.  Né en Syrie en 1929, Amnon Shamosh a immigré à Tel-Aviv dans son enfance et devint plus tard l'un des membres fondateurs du kibboutz Maayan Baruch, où il réside encore aujourd’hui. Diplômé de l'Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem, il écrit en vers et en prose pour les enfants et les adultes ; son travail a été traduit en anglais, en espagnol et en français. Amnon Shamosh reçut le prix Agnon, ainsi nommé ne l’honneur du célèbre lauréat israélien du prix Nobel de littérature, le prix de créativité du Premier Ministre, le prix de littérature du Président d'Israël, il remporta aussi de nombreux autres prix littéraires.
