        El viento entre los pinos

Un ensayo acerca del camino del té

        by Malena Higashi, Nicolás Stimolo

If learning to prepare tea takes a lifetime, what is truly learned in the process? That is the question that surrounds El viento entre los pinos, Japanese-style: without offering an answer, through anecdotes, poems, and reflections that bring the tea ceremony—one of the most exquisite disciplines of Japanese culture—closer to everyday life. Tasks such as purifying the utensils, arranging flowers, preparing the charcoal, and heating the water appear, in the author's words, as a genuine meditation in motion, inviting us to pause in the present and appreciate our surroundings with all our senses.

      • Gaijin

        by Maximiliano Matayoshi

Gaijin, which means “foreigner” in Japanese, is a production happily devoted to discovering the world and fascinations of others. Written in the great nikkei style, due to its ennunciative austerity and restraint, it proposes a message of permanence that hovers like an alarm over the empire of the fleeting, of emptiness and helplessness. With this novel, winner of the UNAM-Alfaguara prize in 2002, Maximiliano Matayoshi manages to move us, while kindly revealing the condition of the immigrant, of great relevance in all cultures and in all times. “Epic of the migrant and the ones who, living between two worlds, look for an identity, Gaijin is one of those novels you read with a tight heart and a smile upon the lips. A beautiful book, that once finished will be remembered with love for a long, long time”.Federico Falco

        The Choice to Quit

        by Madoka Sawa

Don't lie to yourself. Don't force yourself. That is how you expand your possibilities. After leaving Microsoft. The things I value in my life There are things that you don't really want to do and don't need to do, but you don't realize it and continue to do them just because you have done them or because you have been doing them for a long time. That is the "sunk cost" of life. We need to recognize the "sunk costs" that have unconsciously become a burden in our lives, and make the choice to quit. What I want to convey in this book is such simple thinking. Work … Only attend meetings where you can contribute Relationships … Focus on the " happiness of the moment" rather than building connections Things and money… If it's hard to release, then give it away Dreams and goals … Don't push yourself too hard by thinking backwards Quitting is a way to meet a brand new you. You can design your life more freely.

Italians, somehow make it work in the end

        by Isao Miyajima

They value appearance over practicality. The concept of "reading the atmosphere" does not exist. Business is determined by likes and dislikes. From fashion to cars, Italians have created first-class products with their unique sense and philosophy, and this book poignantly analyzes their views on life and work and their ecology.Among the readers who appreciated the book were those who had experienced hardships with Italians. It seemed that the more difficulties they had experienced with Italians, the more strongly they sympathized with me. The most gratifying comment was, "After reading this book, I am no longer angry with Italians. Once you understand the laws that govern different cultures, you will no longer be frustrated. I also began to verbalize and recognize the "laws of Italians," which I had intuitively learned until then. It is common for shallow people to want to use these laws once they have them, and I am no exception to this rule. Whenever I accompany Japanese staff members on a visit to Italy, we all have fun using the "Laws of Italians" to predict their behavior. We all enjoy anticipating the following: "This producer is frowning and discussing petty wine philosophy, but he will soon receive a phone call from Mamma," or "This driver arrived unusually ahead of time and waited for us, but he will stop at a gas station somewhere and let us wait for him to fill up his car," or "We have already requested a bottle of wine for the photo shoot several times, but this person is sure to make a mistake." When I do this, what would normally have been an outburst of frustration and anger, "Why didn't you do what I requested? But in many cases, the situation is resolved with a laugh. Putting things into words has a magical effect to exorcise various kinds of friction. Recently, the number of Italians visiting Japan has been increasing, and now I have more opportunities to teach them the "Laws of the Japanese. It is natural for Italians to be annoyed and irritated by the behavior of Japanese people. That is why I have to tell them in advance, "This dinner starts at 7:00 p.m., but for some reason we are supposed to meet at 6:00 p.m. We will probably only have a 5-minute meeting at 6:00 p.m., and then there will be nothing to do for the next 55 minutes. Since Italy is just about the time the office opens, please go ahead and make some business calls," or "The customer sitting in front of you will probably start dozing off after about three glasses of wine, not because your talk is boring, but because most Japanese people do not have alcohol-dissolving enzymes." Warning them in advance. Then, instead of saying, "That's rude!" rather than, "That's how it is in Japan. Where there is laughter, there is no conflict. Be prepared and you will be fine. What I have introduced in this book are my own "laws of Italians," but they are far from complete, and I am constantly updating them. However, I feel that if we can know the laws of other cultures, anticipate their behavior, and laugh at them when we come into contact with them, we will be able to avoid various conflicts. The author is the only Japanese undercover investigator for Gambero Rosso, the "Michelin of Italy," and was awarded the Order of the Star by the President of Italy in 2014.

The 45 Most Important Lessons of Profitable Investors

        by Yuichiro Ichikawa

"Bonds are safer than stocks" is not always true. "Diversification is good" may be an assumption. Stock prices are always mistaken, so it's okay to ignore them. The factors for investment decisions are all around us. If you need 500 million yen in your life, just make 100 million yen. Full of "eye-opening" knowledge that you knew but didn't understand. Against the backdrop of rising stock prices and anxiety about a "100-year life," people are becoming more and more aware of investment (asset management). However, even if you want to study investment again, you may not know what to think about, and you may be influenced by other people's success stories, information on the Internet that you cannot understand, or the words and actions of so-called professionals, and in the end, it may not work out. In this book, the author, who has been involved in asset management advice as a CFP and also holds his own courses as the head of an investment school that is now attracting attention, gives advice on how to organize the knowledge and information essential for investment and how to find your own success rules and philosophy. The basic idea is that "investing is like finding a job. Do you want to work for a company that you don't know anything about, a company that has no future, or a company that will be criticized by society? This is the point. The "royal road to investment" is to grow your assets along with the growth of your chosen investment, without being misled by temporary booms or the words and actions of those around you. So, what kind of investments should you choose and what stance should you take? With a wealth of concrete examples and a gentle narrative, this book explains how to obtain a variety of effective information that even a layman can do, how to analyze the information in a way that suits you, and what not to do, in the form of "45 lessons" from the perspective of correct investment thinking and practice.

Raising Your Kids to Be High Achievers

        by Hiroaki Enomoto

●Newly graduate employees lacking perseverance to fit in the work environment We often hear difficulties of managing new and young employees who get depressed easily when they are scolded by their bosses and sometimes they don’t even come to work from the next day. Some young employees do not obey the instructions and do not try to make improvements in work. Violence in Japanese elementary schools has been on the rise, which indicates how children communicate with each other is also changing. The early-age education gives certain effects on children such as helping them to enter prestigious schools, but these effects do not last. Furthermore, children nowadays have less opportunities to learn independence and diversity through playing with friends, experiencing the nature and making adventures. From the perspectives of parenting and career development, the book focuses on the competitive skills that young people should acquire to do better in real world.   ●Need of non-cognitive skills, such as self-control. James Heckman, who won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2000, proved in his over 40 years of studies that early education had the temporal effect on increasing intellectual capacity. However, he concludes that it is not the only factor leading to have good educational background and high-income career. In fact, the early education has lost its effects on building the cognitive skills (intellectual capacity) by the age of eight. Looking at the data after reaching adulthood, however, those who received early education had higher educational degree and annual income. It suggests that acquiring non-cognitive skills such as cooperating with others, having patience and motivation are keys to success after the early education. To develop non-cognitive skills in childhood, parents need to have the attitude to wait for their children to reach a conclusion by themselves, and think together with them. This book is convincing because it discusses parenting based on the latest findings in psychology and pedagogy, while emphasizing on the need of fostering patience, cooperativeness, and independence of children. This is a must-read book for parents who want to find clues on raising their toddlers and elementary school children.
