        Die Jagd nach dem Schnark

        by Lewis Carroll, Henry Holiday, Klaus Reichert, Klaus Reichert

        Lewis Carroll wurde als Charles Lutwidge Dodgson am 27. Januar 1832 in Daresbury, England als drittes von elf Kindern und ältester Sohn des Pfarrers Charles Dodgson geboren. Carroll stellte schon als Kind sein mathematisches Interesse unter Beweis, war sehr belesen und verfasste für sich und seine Geschwister kleine Theaterstücke, um so der engen Welt des Pfarrhauses zu entfliehen. Nach unglücklichen Jahren in einer Privatschule begann er 1850 sein Studium in Oxford am College Christ Church und lehrte dort im Anschluss als Tutor Mathematik. Er entdeckte bald seine Leidenschaft für die Fotografie, später widmete er sich zunehmend auch dem Schreiben, das stark von seiner Liebe zur Logik und Mathematik geprägt war. Er fand insbesondere am Entwerfen von fantasievollen Denkaufgaben und Wortspielen großen Gefallen. An der Universität von Oxford lernte er das Mädchen Alice Liddell kennen, die Tochter des Dekans von Christ Church. Sie gilt als Vorlage und Inspirationsquelle für sein 1865 entstandenes, berühmtestes Werk Alice im Wunderland. Der Roman wurde in mehr als 80 Sprachen übersetzt. Er starb am 14. Januar 1898 in Guildford. Klaus Reichert, geboren 1938, emeritierter Professor für Anglistik an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, 1964-1968 Lektor in den Verlagen Suhrkamp und Insel, 2002-2011 Präsident der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung in Darmstadt. My Most Beautiful Holidays

        Relaxation Stories for Children

        by Weber, Jutta Maria

        The fast pace and the many stimuli of today's world, as well as the pressure to meet deadlines and perform, can easily lead to stress symptoms in children. It is therefore all the more important to support children in regenerating after stress, to help them achieve inner balance and to create islands of calm for them.The stories in this book immerse children from 5 to 12 years in experiences close to nature and help them to relax. The book contains three story series for reading aloud, each with a stay on a holiday farm as the frame story. The children are invited to go on journeys in their imagination, to perceive things attentively and to feel their own sensations quite consciously. In their imagination, they explore places in the midst of nature, make contact with the animals on the holiday farm and form friendships.

        The Shoemaker's Holiday

        by Thomas Dekker

        by David Bevington, Robert Smallwood, Stanley Wells, Richard Dutton, Alison Findlay, Helen Ostovich

        Thomas Dekker's The Shoemaker's Holiday is one of the most popular of Elizabethan plays, entertaining, racy and vivid in its characterisation. Revealing a vital portrait of Elizabethan London and the interaction of social classes within the city, its social commentary is on the whole optimistic, though darker tones are discernible. The play has the whole optimistic, though darker tones are discernible. The play has had a lively history of performance on both the professional and amateur stage; the roles of Simon and Madgy Eyre in particular have proved worthy vehicles for the talents of such performers as Sir Donald Wolfit and Dame Edith Evans, and a notable production was directed by Orson Wells. The editors offer a study of the text; a historical and critical introduction, which includes a study of the play's relationship with contemporary life and drama and of its place in Dekker's work; a stage history' a detailed commentary and a reprint of source materials. ;

        Vacation Decision-Making

        by Alain Decrop

        This book explores the complex decision-making processes involved in choosing and buying tourism products and services. It combines a theoretical overview of the basics of tourist behaviour and decision-making, with the results of an in-depth qualitative study of vacationers. It considers both the generic decision to go on vacation, or not, and more specific travel decisions, such as destination and accommodation type, from an individual and social point of view. It looks at how, when, and why such decisions are made, and the factors that influence the final outcome. The book concludes by rejecting existing tourist typologies in favour of a new typology of vacationers.

        Holiday camps in twentieth-century Britain

        Packaging pleasure

        by Sandra Trudgen Dawson, Jeffrey Richards

        This book is the story of two holiday camp chains established in the 1930s that provided thousands with packaged pleasure. Warner and Butlin's commercial camps emerged at the intersection of cultural shifts that politicised working-class leisure and consumption. Entertainment fostered in the post-war camps provided a forum for popular pleasure that reinforced the idea of a 'national' culture grown from the common experience of war. Butlin and Warner, the big commercial chains of the 50s and 60s, are enmeshed in our social and cultural history. Dawson uncovers the significance of the holiday camps to the political, economic, social, and cultural history of twentieth-century Britain, drawing on an impressive variety of sources, from government documents to trade journals, advertising, photographs, oral histories, literature, films and songs. This unique volume will be of interest to academics and specialists of British social history, popular culture and tourism studies whilst remaining accessible to enthusiasts. ;

        Tourism, Technology and Competitive Strategies

        by Auliana Poon

        Tourism, the world’s fastest growing industry, is now entering a more mature phase. During the 1970s and 1980s mass tourism, with its rigid, standardized packages, developed rapidly and provided many consumers with their first experiences of international travel. Today, a complex and multi-faceted industry, tourism faces growing pressures - consumer demand for more individually tailored holidays, an increasingly competitive operational environment, opportunities provided by new technology and growing environmental concerns. This book analyses the major challenges facing tourism today. The author highlights the central role of information technology in creating mass tourism by the mid-1970’s, and how this technology and innovation is creating a new “best practice” of flexibility, market segmentation and diagonal integration within tourism. The book demonstrates how companies in the industry can enhance their competitiveness in the market place. Aimed at both academics and industry practitioners, this original and challenging work will attract a wide readership.
