Qualities of food
by Mark Harvey, Andrew McMeekin, Alan Warde
In this book, the complexity and the significance of the foods we eat are analysed from a variety of perspectives, by sociologists, economists, geographers and anthropologists. Chapters address a number of intriguing questions: how do people make judgments about taste? How do such judgments come to be shared by groups of people?; what social and organisational processes result in foods being certified as of decent or proper quality? How has dissatisfaction with the food system been expressed? What alternatives are thought to be possible? The multi-disciplinary analysis of this book explores many different answers to such questions. The first part of the book focuses on theoretical and conceptual issues, the second part considers processes of formal and informal regulation, while the third part examines social and political responses to industrialised food production and mass consumption. Qualities of food will be of interest to researchers and students in all the social science disciplines that are concerned with food, whether marketing, sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, human nutrition or economics.

by Author: Zeiad Amjad Abdulrazzak Aghwan
Halal is a pathway of life, it further the progress of a high standard of living by guiding the people on how to treat their own bodies, actions, and interactions with each other, and how they treat other creations such as animals. Furthermore, guiding the people on how to consume, continue their live, and manage their business. Few decades ago, majority of Muslims have shallow understanding of the term halalan thayyiban although it has been mentioned in many verses from the Holy Quran. Halalan tayyiban refers to the commands from Allah SWT that mankind should select products that have the features of halal and tayyib. The concept considers all the physical and spiritual advantages of the product to the people. Halalan tayyiban products (food and non-food) can be interpreted as the product that is permitted to be consumed and can give benefits to the human body. Thus, the concept of halalan tayyiban is attracting the non-Muslims to be part of the users of halal certified products. As a result of rapid growing of halal industry, halal has been moved up from its traditional understanding to the contemporary one and then a significant consideration has to be granted to halal education and research. Covering the discussion on halalan thayyiban and some categories of contemporary halal practices, this book is suitable for all Muslims and non-Muslims, academics, researchers, students, and industry players

Rebel
A Memoir
by Rahaf Mohammed
Rahaf Mohammed opened her Twitter account on January 6, 2019. Stripped of her passport, she had barricaded herself into her Bangkok hotel room as she awaited either freedom or forcible return to Saudi Arabia. If the latter, she was sure she would be killed; that is what has happened to rebel women in her country. Desperate, she reached out to the world, and the world answered. Online, she rallied approximately 45,000 followers that day. Last summer, Time named her one of the 25 Most Influential People on the Internet. Now, two years later and safely in Canada, Mohammed is ready to speak to the world. Her story, told in a fiercely original voice, promises to change the lives of women and girls who have known the same repression and abuse, and turn their hopelessness into hope. We have long heard about activist women being jailed, fathers beating and raping daughters, religion run amok – in Saudi Arabia and in other countries; but now we have the words, anecdotes, and life experience of a young woman who grew up with the abuse, the brainwashing, the deceit. Saudi Arabia’s repressive, outmoded control of its women is a tragedy and a scandal, not only for girls and women, but for men robbed of their humanity, and for a country robbed of the contribution women such as Mohammed could make. Along with the story of her daring escape, Mohammed will expose the inside story of Saudi women; share untold truths from the closed kingdom; and provide an eyewitness account of the brutal treatment of those who stand up and rebel.

Dina Begum has been a regular visitor since she was a little girl eating lamb kofta rolls with her dad at the Sweet & Spicy cafe. In her first book, she celebrates Brick Lane's diverse food cultures: from the homestyle Bangladeshi curries she grew up eating to her own luscious and indulgent cakes, from Chinese-style burgers to classic Buffalo wings, from smoothie bowls to raw coffee brownies. With contributions from street food traders and restaurants including Gram Bangla, Beigel Bake, Blanchette, Chez Elles, St Sugar of London, Cafe 1001 and Moo Cantina, the Brick Lane Cookbook is a culinary map of the East End's tastiest street and a snapshot of London at its authentic, multi-cultural best.

Second XI
Cricket In Its Outposts
by Tim Wigmore, Peter Miller, Gideon Haigh, Sahil Dutta and Tim Brooks
As the world's second most popular sport, cricket is much richer and more diverse than many realise. Globally, passionate players give up holidays, time with loved ones and hard-earned money to achieve the extraordinary and play for their country. Afghanistan, whose captain grew up on a refugee camp, will play in the 2015 World Cup not just in spite of the Taliban but partly because of them. In Ireland, cricket has reawakened after a century of dormancy - but can they achieve their aim of Test cricket and end the player drain to England? These tales resonate far beyond cricket, touching on war, sectarianism and even women's rights. This book explains why an Emirati faced Allan Donald armed only with a sunhat; whether cricket will succeed in China and America; what happened when Kenya reached the World Cup semi-finals, and how cricket in the Netherlands almost collapsed after two bad days.
