A gendered opportunity

This book follows the lives of female Jewish refugees who fled Nazi persecution and became nurses. Nursing was nominally a profession but with its poor pay and harsh discipline, it was unpopular with British women. In the years preceding the Second World War, hospitals in Britain suffered chronic nurse staffing crises. As the country faced inevitable war, the Government and the profession's elite courted refugees as an antidote to the shortages, but many hospitals refused to employ Continental Jews. The book explores the changes in the refugees' status and lives from the war years to the foundation of the National Health Service and to the latter decades of the twentieth century. It places the refugees at the forefront of manoeuvres in nursing practice, education and research at a time of social upheaval and alterations in the position of women.

Attention is drawn to everyday design practice, educational issues, mediating channels, networks, design exchange, organisational strategies and discourses on modernism. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources and placing an emphasis on visual analysis, this book provides a model for a contextualised graphic design history as an integral part of the history of design and visual culture.

This book traces the remarkable rise of this professional identity in historical perspective from a position of anonymity in the early twentieth century, to mid-century professionalisation, to decline and disintegration by 1980. Drawing on new, extensive, original archival research, it uncovers the history of a profession in a state of re-invention, 1930-1980 in Britain and the United States. The book tests assumptions about the relationship between the professions in the two countries, bringing them into comparative historical perspective for the first time. The gendered dynamics of professionalisation and their interaction with the representation of the heroic male designer are interrogated and critically examined. Building on new gender perspectives to the history of the industrial design profession, the book calls for a re-examination of the limits and boundaries of what constitutes professional identity and work.

This book tells the story of critical avant-garde design in Japan, which emerged during the 1960s and continues to inspire designers today. The practice communicates a form of visual and material protest drawing on the ideologies and critical theories of the 1960s and 1970s, notably feminism, body politics, the politics of identity, and ecological, anti-consumerist and anti-institutional critiques, as well as the concept of otherness. It also presents an encounter between two seemingly contradictory concepts: luxury and the avant-garde. The book challenges the definition of design as the production of unnecessary decorative and conceptual objects, and the characterisation of Japanese design in particular as beautiful, sublime or a product of 'Japanese culture'. In doing so it reveals the ways in which material and visual culture serve to voice protest and formulate a social critique.

Hamutal Bar-Yosef ist eine bekannte israelische Schriftstellerin, Dichterin, Übersetzerin und Gelehrte. Sie wurde in einem Kibbuz als Tochter von Eltern geboren, die ihre Familie durch den Holocaust verloren hatten. Ihr einziger Bruder wurde 1948 im israelischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg getötet. Im Alter von zwanzig Jahren heiratete die Autorin den Dramatiker Josef Bar-Josef und hatte vier Kinder. Eines ihrer Kinder beging mit sechzehn Jahren Selbstmord. Sie versorgte ihre Familie zuerst als Gymnasiallehrerin und schrieb dann Leitfäden für Lehrer. Die Autorin schrieb ihre Doktorarbeit erst mit vierzig Jahren und wurde Professorin für hebräische Literatur an der Ben-Gurion-Universität. Sie hat acht wissenschaftliche Bücher und fünfzehn Gedichtbände veröffentlicht und zahlreiche Preise für ihre Gedichte gewonnen. Ihre Sammlung von Geschichten, Die Mauer usw., (ursprünglich betitelt Musik) gewann den ASI-Preis (Association of Israeli Writers). Bar-Yosef hat Gedichte und Prosa aus dem Englischen, Französischen und Russischen übersetzt. Eine englischsprachige nordamerikanische Ausgabe wurde Anfang 2019 von Samuel Wachtmans Sons, Inc., CA, veröffentlicht.184 Seiten. Eine französischsprachige Ausgabe ist zur Veröffentlichung im Sommer 2019 geplant.

Elle a écrit huit ouvrages d’érudition mais également quinze livres de poésie et ces derniers lui ont valu de nombreux prix prestigieux. Son recueil de nouvelles Le mur (intitulé à l'origine Musique) a remporté le prix ASI (Association des Ecrivains Israéliens).Le professeur Bar-Yosef a traduit des œuvres de poésie et des romans depuis l’anglais, le français et le russe.

In the pharmacy, the staff communicate with customers, colleagues, the medical profession, sales representatives and nursing home staff. Pharmacy employees produce written information based on well-chosen sources and represent the pharmacy to the outside world through presentations, on social media, or with the help of flyers, posters and other promotional materials. The Wall, Etc. by Hamutal Bar-Yosef is a collection of eighteen powerfully written stories, some of which are based on true stories. Israel’s celebrated writer Amos Oz called the collection "especially strong and heartbreaking." Hamutal Bar-Yosef creates in The Wall, Etc., a tragicomic, sometimes grotesque slice-of-life narrative that portrays the human condition as the yawning abyss between desires and reality. She expresses great empathy and respect for the characters she depicts, and she enters their inner worlds with a breathtaking sensitivity. Hamutal Bar-Yosef is a well-known Israeli writer, poet, translator, and scholar. She was born in a kibbutz to parents who lost their family in the Holocaust. Her only brother was killed in Israel’s 1948 War of Independence. At age twenty, the author married the playwright Yosef Bar-Yosef and had four children; one committed suicide at sixteen. She provided for her family first as a high school teacher, and then by writing guides for teachers. The author didn’t write her PhD dissertation until after turning forty, and she became a professor of Hebrew literature at Ben-Gurion University. She has published eight scholarly books and fifteen books of poetry, and she has won numerous distinguished prizes for her poetry. Her collection of stories, The Wall, Etc., (originally titled Music) won the ASI (Association of Israeli Writers) prize. Professor Bar-Yosef has translated poetry and prose fiction from English, French, and Russian.
