View Rights PortalThis book takes the reader on a fascinating journey, demonstrating in an understandable and entertaining way how the brain affects our thoughts, actions, and feelings - and that this sometimes only peripherally involves reason. It shows, that the subconscious actually exists and how it affects us, how we arrive at both right and wrong decisions, how our memory works, how fragile it can be, and yet also how robust. Using insightful experiments and the latest research results, including many examples, this book presents the reader what an incredibly impressive thinking organ the brain actually is – even if it is not a purely “rational machine”. Target Group: For people interested in the results of research into the workings of the brain in the areas of decision-making, memory, and consciousness.
— An exciting and entertaining explanation of neuroscience — In the diverting and humorous style for which the author is known – learning has never been this much fun What processes in the brain are responsible for intelligence, free will, empathy or reason? In this accessible and sophisticated exploration of the nature and workings of social and political power, Haugaard examines the interrelation between domination and empowerment. Building upon the perspectives of Steven Lukes, Michel Foucault, Amy Allen, Hannah Arendt, Anthony Giddens, Pierre Bourdieu and others, he offers a clear theoretical framework, delineating power in four interrelated dimensions. The first and second dimensions of power entail two different types of social conflict. The third dimension concerns tacit knowledge, uses of truth and reification. Drawing upon genealogical theory and accounts of slavery as social death, the fourth dimension of power concerns the power to create social subjects. The book concludes with an original normative pragmatist power-based account of democracy. Offering lucid and entertaining illustrations of complex theoretical perspectives, this book is essential reading for scholars and activists.
This book is about power in welfare encounters. Present-day citizens are no longer the passive clients of the bureaucracy and welfare workers are no longer automatically the powerful party of the encounter. Instead, citizens are expected to engage in active, responsible and coproducing relationships with welfare workers. However, other factors impact these interactions; factors which often pull in different directions. Welfare encounters are thus influenced by bureaucratic principles and market values as well. Consequently, this book engages with both Weberian (bureaucracy) and Foucauldian (market values/NPM) studies when investigating the powerful welfare encounter. The book is targeted Academics, post-graduates, and undergraduates within sociology, anthropology and political science.
Capacity building is a topic of intense focus in many industrialized countries. This book explores the theoretical underpinnings of capacity building to sustain the natural, cultural and human resources of communities. It reviews the extensive literature on capacity-building strategies and policies and examines the implications of sustainable development in communities around the world. The book's approach is both theoretical and applied. It offers methods of operationalizing sustainable development and sustainability theories and explores capacity building methods at different levels of government. Successful practices in non-governmental and governmental agency roles are examined. By considering the path towards embracing whole, or partial, sustainability, it provides a comprehensive analysis and examination of how to build capacity in tackling many development problems, especially those linked to infrastructure accumulation and land-use development. Contributors shed light on the overall impact of globalisation and many concepts related to sustainable development and sustainability of the economic socio-cultural and environmental systems. This book: · Examines the links between environment and sustainable development; · Provides models for capacity building; · Considers the role of globalization in sustainable development; · Renders a theoretical and applied examination of the issues; · Provides multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches. This book is recommended for research libraries, for graduate studies in economic development, sustainable development, environmental management; and undergraduate studies relating to developing and emerging countries. It is also useful for government officials, researchers, decision makers and policy analysts involved in sustainable development.
The Divine Power of Emperor Shun was recounted by ancient children's literature writer Zhou Jing and contemporary painter Gu Zengping, the latter recarving stories and characters in the style of Chinese painting. The integration of the poetry of the text and the richness of the painting is a wonderful interpretation of ancient myths, which expresses the unique Chinese charm and Chinese spirit. This book mainly tells the story of Emperor Shun's growth journey, and writes Shun's magical power full of blessing and good luck. As a mythical story, there are naturally some fantasy elements in these realistic life stories and emotions, combined with the imaginary birds and golden dragons.
