The Weimar period, which extended from 1919 to 1933, was a time of political violence, economic crisis, generational and gender tension, and cultural experiment and change in Germany. Despite these major issues, the Republic is often treated only as a preface to the study of the rise of Fascism. This text seeks to restore the balance, exploring the Weimar period in its own right. Amongst the topics discussed are: Weimar as the avant-garde artistic centre of Europe in the 1920s when many cultural figures were politically engaged on both sides of the political spectrum; Weimar as a German state racked by conflict over questions of morality versus ideas of greater sexual freedom for women, homosexual rights, abortion and birth control; the struggle to win the hearts and minds of German youth, a struggle won decisively by the right-wing; and Weimar as the first German state in which women played a significant political role. ;
Das Weimarer Residenzschloß war nicht nur der Wohnsitz von Herzogin Anna Amalia. 1617 wurde hier die »Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft zu Reinigung der deutschen Sprache« gegründet; in der Schloßkapelle, »Himmelsburg« genannt, war Johann Sebastian Bach an der Orgel zu hören; Goethe versuchte beim Wiederaufbau des Ostflügels, sein in Italien entwickeltes Architekturideal zu verwirklichen. Im 20. Jahrhundert tagten die Abgeordneten der Weimarer Republik im Schloß. Annette Seemann schildert seine wechselvolle Geschichte vom Mittelalter an bis heute.
Es waren nicht nur die Herren Goethe, Herder, Schiller, Liszt, Feininger und Gropius, sondern ganz besonders auch die Damen, die entscheidend dazu beigetragen haben, dass aus dem kleinen thüringischen Städtchen Weimar eine weltberühmte Stätte der Kunst und Kultur geworden ist. Ob als Regentinnen, Salondamen, Schriftstellerinnen, Frauenrechtlerinnen oder avantgardistische Künstlerinnen – Herzogin Anna Amalia, Charlotte von Stein, Johanna Schopenhauer, Jenny Lind, Fanny Lewald, Marianne Brandt und viele andere kluge und eigensinnige Damen haben seit der Zeit der Klassik bis in die Moderne des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts ihre ganz besonderen Spuren im Leben von Weimar hinterlassen.
Wer war diese Anna Amalia, die sich von der charmanten jungen Rokokoprinzessin zur Schutzgöttin der Künste wandelte? Dieser reichbebilderte Band illustriert den Lebensweg einer vielschichtigen Persönlichkeit, der es gelang, die eigenen künstlerischen Interessen für die kulturelle Entwicklung des Herzogtums Weimar fruchtbar zu machen. Das klassische Weimar ist ohne Anna Amalia (1739–1807), die Mutter Carl Augusts, undenkbar. Unter ihrer Regentschaft verwandelte sich die kleine Residenz zum geistigen Zentrum der Goethezeit. Es gelang ihr, herausragende Geister der Epoche – darunter Goethe, Wieland, Herder und Schiller – an ihren Hof zu ziehen. Sie begründete den »Weimarer Musenhof« mit seinen berühmten Leseabenden; sie förderte das deutsche Theater und verband das aristokratische Rokoko mit der neuen bürgerlichen Gefühlskultur. Ihre große Italienreise spiegelt die Italienbegeisterung der Zeit und Goethes Einfluß. Annette Seemann schildert den Lebensweg einer der bedeutendsten aufgeklärten Fürstinnen ihrer Zeit. Ein Akzent ihrer Darstellung liegt auf dem vielleicht größten Verdienst der Herzogin: der Gründung der »Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek«. Nach dem verheerenden Brand des Jahres 2004 wird sie in Anna Amalias 200. Todesjahr nach umfangreichen Restaurierungen wieder zur Benutzung freigegeben.

Die Klassik Stiftung Weimar besitzt einen einmaligen Bestand von eigenhändigen Zeichnungen Goethes – ein Schatz, der nach aufwendiger Restaurierung erstmals wieder in der Öffentlichkeit gezeigt wird: Im Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid wird von Ende Januar bis Ende April 2008 eine repräsentative Auswahl von über 70 Landschaftszeichnungen ausgestellt. Das Buch zu dieser Ausstellung enthält alle ausgestellten Bilder und erscheint parallel auf deutsch im Insel Verlag. Im historischen Teil seiner Farbenlehre kommt Goethe auch – in einer "Konfession des Verfassers" – auf sich selbst zu sprechen: "Ich war in einsamen Stunden früherer Zeit auf die Natur aufmerksam geworden, wie sie sich als Landschaft zeigt, und hatte, da ich von Kindheit auf in den Werkstätten der Maler aus und ein ging, Versuche gemacht, das, was mir in der Wirklichkeit erschien, so gut es sich schicken wollte, in ein Bild zu verwandeln; ja ich fühlte hiezu, wozu ich eigentlich keine Anlage hatte, einen weit größern Trieb als zu demjenigen, was mir von Natur leicht und bequem war." Das zeichnerische Werk Goethes steht also zumindest zeitweise mit im Zentrum von Goethes Schaffen. Essays von Javier Arnaldo, Werner Hofmann, Petra Maisak, Margarete Oppel und anderen vertiefen den Eindruck, den Goethes Landschaften hinterlassen, und stellen sie in ihren lebens- und werkgeschichtlichen Kontext.
Newly available in paperback, Redefining the French Republic is an innovative work. Explicitly adopting a multidisciplinary approach, the book investigates continuity and change in contemporary French politics, society and culture. The chapters go beyond the familiar question of whether the Republic is acting in accordance with its vocation, to address the issue of whether that vocation is still viable. Drawing on contributions that reflect a variety of methodological approaches, ranging from theoretical speculations and modelling to the interpretation of fieldwork data, this study examines the dynamics of the relationship between the Republic and its constituencies, in the fields of political relations, territorial identities, social movements, public policy and foreign policy, and in each context juxtaposing what is perceived as the model for that relationship with the current reality. France in the twenty-first century is facing challenges that could not have been imagined a generation ago. The test for the Republic is whether it will resist the ongoing pressures for redefinition imposed by internal contestation and the emergence of powerful supranational and global forces, or whether it will find a way of adapting to these pressures while preserving a part of the vocation and ambition that make it characteristically French. The book concludes that, though the French polity remains characteristically different from other models of modern liberal democracy, internal and external pressures have challenged the republican model to the core. ;

As a Stadholder and relative of the Prince of Orange, William Frederick was among the key players in a fragmented republican state system. This study offers a vivid analysis of his political strategies and reveals how unwritten codes of patronage guided his daily contacts and shaped his mental world. As a patron at his court and as a client of the Prince of Orange, William Frederick developed distinctive patronage roles, appropriate to different social spheres. By assessing these different roles, Janssen provides a unique insight into the ways in which a seventeenth-century nobleman negotiated and articulated clientage, friendship and corruption in his life. The Republic of Letters emerged during the seventeenth century as a concept to describe the interaction between scholars across Europe and beyond. While the concept was an imaginary one, it was firmly grounded in a reality of close circles of interaction between intellectuals, which had always existed but which was now endowed with a renewed sense of collaboration and participation within this community without barriers of statehood or creed. These fifteen essays explore differing aspects of collaboration and interdisciplinarity in the context of the radical change in mindset that the emergence of the Republic of Letters had fostered. Essays deal with French and English theatre, travel writing, the identity of the woman writer, the nature and function of gossip, scholarly interaction, and political and theological ideologies. The concluding essay provides a synthesis of the nature of seventeenth-century scholarship. The volume offers new insights into the mechanisms and workings of the Republic of Letters and charters the transition of scholarly pursuit being classified, even by some scholars themselves, as a solitary and sometimes pedantic pursuit to the notion of a network of ideas and interchange. This self-identification with a transnational league which knew no limits of geography, resources, gender or class marks a radical transition in the history of ideas and was to have far-reaching consequences, solidly preparing the way for the Enlightenment.
