        Sexual progressives

        Reimagining intimacy in Scotland, 1880-1914

        by Tanya Cheadle

Sexual Progressives is a major new study of the feminists and socialists who campaigned against the moral conservatism of the Victorian period. Drawing on a range of sources, from letters and diaries to radical newspapers and utopian novels, it provides the first group portrait of Scotland's hitherto neglected sexual rebels. They include Bella and Charles Pearce, prominent Glasgow socialists and disciples of an American-based mystic who taught that religion needed 're-sexed'; Jane Hume Clapperton, a feminist freethinker with advanced views on birth-control and women's right to sexual pleasure; and Patrick Geddes, founder of an avant-garde Edinburgh subculture and co-author of an influential scientific book on sex. A consideration of their lives and work forces a reappraisal of our understanding of British sexual progressivism during this period and will therefore be of interest to all historians of modern gender and sexuality.

        Love and revolution

A politics for the deep commons

        by Matt York

Based on award-winning research, Love and revolution brings classical and contemporary anarchist thought into a mutually beneficial dialogue with a global cross-section of ecological, anti-capitalist, feminist and anti-racist activists - discussing real-life examples of the loving-caring relations that underpin many contemporary struggles. Such a (r)evolutionary love is discovered to be a common embodied experience among the activists contributing to this collective vision, manifested as a radical solidarity, as political direct action, as long-term processes of struggle, and as a deeply relational more-than-human ethics. This book provides an essential resource for all those interested in building a free society grounded in solidarity and care, and offers a timely contribution to contemporary movement discourse.

        Tourism and Gender-based Violence

        Challenging Inequalities

by Paola Vizcaino-Suárez, Heather Jeffrey, Claudia Eger

Gender-based violence (GBV) in travel and tourism is embedded within wider social structures of gender inequalities and discrimination. Even though it is pertinent to study GBV in all its forms, this book focuses on the multiple and interconnected manifestations of violence that women/girls encounter in tourism consumption and production (physical, sexual, emotional or socio-economic), while seeking to open the debate on violence against sexual minorities (LGBT) and discussing men/boys as victims and perpetrators of GBV. By engaging in a critical exploration of the theoretical landscape of GBV and case studies on GBV and sexual harassment, the book adopts a multidisciplinary perspective drawing on feminist, intersectional and post-colonial frameworks, bringing together contributions from academics and practitioners across the globe.

DESERT PASSIONS - Wild Love in Sinai

        by Robert Bettelheim

Desert Passions unfolds tales of wild, dramatic transformations that may occur to people in Sinai due to a mixture ofcravings, sexual arousal, spontaneity, love, rapture, hopes and dreams—conflicting forces that are often at odds with our current lifestyles. New motivations appear, behavioral patterns might shift or completely change, sex and romance easily flourish, often unrestrained by former inhibitions. This explains why seekers trying to find their way in this puzzled, crazy world travel to the Sinai Desert where secret passions, hidden sexual fantasies, and lust that have been long subdued suddenly emerge and rule. Since ancient times, the Sinai Desert has been a place for spiritual and mental metamorphosis, initiating its powerful impact on anyone who wanders there. When Western ideas and habits first met traditional, tribal Bedouins after the Six-Day War in 1967, it created a unique cultural divergence. Many Westerners, too, have been deeply influenced by the raw nature revealed to them.  Robert Bettelheim was born in Vienna, but after his parents fled the Nazi Anschluss of Austria to China, he grew up in Shanghai Ghetto under Japanese rule during WWII. Bettelheim later served in the IDF as a paratrooper, and soon became an ardent scuba diver on the enchanting shores of the Sinai Desert. A musicology graduate and teacher, the author lives with his wife in Kibbutz Zikim, which is not infrequently under shell fire. He has six grandchildren. An English-language eBook edition was published in Summer 2018.  326 Pages, 15X22.5 cm.

The First Year of the Love Calendar

        by Wang Yuewen

Sun Li, the protagonist of the novel, is a bestseller writer and his wife Xizi is the head of a university library. Their son Sun Yichi has been rebellious and unruly since childhood, remaining distant from his mother. Afraid of the exhaustion of his creativity, the middle-aged Sun Li begins to question the meaning of his writings. He thus suffers from serious insomnia and anxiety. Just at this time, his wife Xizi begins to have her own amorous secrets. Sun Li also finds himself unable to leave Li Qiao, director of New Evening Paper. These affairs have pushed their seemingly peaceful family life to the verge of collapse. The love calendar refers to the calendar that belongs only to Sun Li and his wife Xizi for their love. But such turbulent life experience has caused them to temporarily betray their love calendar … They eventually begin again the first year of their love calendar. Through the depiction of the love, marriage, and family life of Sun Li and Xizi, the novel becomes a retrospection of the spiritual tendency, emotional development and love pattern of the Chinese over the past 20 to 30 years. It also vividly outlines the changes of social mores in China over the past years in a figurative way. Even amorous entanglements are not devoid of elements of the officialdom, with honest and corrupt officials still on the scene. According to Wang Yuewen, this is an element of reality rather than of officialdom – “after all nobody can live in a vacuum space”.

        Rules and ethics

        Perspectives from anthropology and history

        by Morgan Clarke, Emily Corran

This book investigates the pronounced enthusiasm that many traditions display for codes of ethics characterised by a multitude of rules. Recent anthropological interest in ethics and historical explorations of 'self-fashioning' have led to extensive study of the virtuous self, but existing scholarship tends to pass over the kind of morality that involves legalistic reasoning. Rules and ethics corrects that omission by demonstrating the importance of rules in everyday moral life in a variety of contexts. In a nutshell, it argues that legalistic moral rules are not necessarily an obstruction to a rounded ethical self, but can be an integral part of it. An extended introduction first sets out the theoretical basis for studies of ethical systems that are characterised by detailed rules. This is followed by a series of empirical studies of rule-oriented moral traditions in a comparative perspective.

        Wildlife Damage Control

Principles for the Management of Damage by Vertebrate Pests

        by Jim Hone

Wildlife can cause problems worldwide - in conservation, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, as well as to human and animal health and safety in rural and urban areas. For this reason, wildlife in affected areas can be defined as pests, and forms of control sought to limit and prevent damage. In looking at solutions by identifying and using common principles in the assessment and control of pest damage this book focuses on controlling damage, rather than the animal itself. The book demonstrates ecological theories and shows how they are relevant to biodiversity conservation and other topics, and how they can be evaluated in studies of wildlife damage control.

        Gun Love

by Jennifer Clement, Nicolai von Schweder-Schreiner
