Tourism offers countless global locations, providing a multitude of sensory experiences. These include commercialised tourism products such as saunas and floatation tanks through to natural phenomenon such as mountains and wilderness destinations. Consequently, sensory elements are a curious concept within tourism because every destination provides a sensory experience of one kind or another. The first of its kind, this book examines holidays and tourism through sensory perceptions which either encourage or deter consumers. It studies sensoryscapes and how they effect and affect tourism at destinations and be linked with the development of tourist niches, reflecting the segmenting of the mass market tourism into smaller segments. Finally, it reflects on how with increased urbanisation there a growing need is to find quiet spaces, free from urban or anthropogenic noise, such as silent retreats and dark sky meditation holidays. Escape has always been one of the main components of tourism development together with attraction to spatial locations that match tourists' needs. Structed to address each of the senses separately, this book provides a: · wide range of case studies from interdisciplinary backgrounds · links amongst common themes across the various threads of research on sensory experiences · theoretical framework and practical application for sensory tourism. It will be of interest to those studying tourism management as well as wider social science disciplines.

Humanities & Social SciencesMay 2020Spain in the nineteenth century
New essays on experiences of culture and society
by Andrew Ginger, Geraldine Lawless
The nineteenth-century Hispanic world was shattered to its core by war, civil war, and revolution. At the same time, it confronted a new period of European and North-American expansion and development. In these essays, authors explore major, dynamic ways that people in Spain envisaged how they would adapt and change, or simply continue as they were. Each chapter title begins with the words "How to...", and examines the ways in which Spaniards conceived or undertook major activities that shaped their lives. These range from telling the time to being a man. Adaptability, paradox, and inconsistency come to the fore in many of the essays. We find before us a human quest for opportunity and survival in a complex and changing world. This wide-ranging book contains chapters by leading scholars from the United States, United Kingdom, and Spain.

EducationSemantic correlations
Build Stronger Semantic and Vocabulary Skills Through Meaningful Word Relationships
by Alice Kassotaki - Speech Language Pathologist MSc, BSc
A visual and structured approach to concept categorization and word recall. Semantic Correlations, authored by speech-language pathologist Alice Kassotaki, MSc, BSc, is a carefully designed tool that helps children enhance their lexical and semantic processing abilities. Centered on the principle that new concepts are more easily acquired when linked to existing knowledge, this book guides learners through tasks that reinforce the understanding of semantic relationships and support immediate information recall. The activities unfold over two levels of difficulty. In the first, children are presented with three words, one of which does not belong to the studied category, allowing them to explore differences and establish common semantic properties. In the second, more advanced level, all three words fall within the same category, challenging learners to identify deeper similarities before classifying them. This progression fosters cognitive flexibility and semantic accuracy. Children work on skills such as vocabulary enrichment, receptive and expressive language, categorization, and semantic reasoning. By using hierarchical structures that show the transition from general to specific concepts, the book creates an intuitive visual guide that deepens comprehension. With translation rights available, Semantic Correlations is an ideal addition to any publisher’s special education or speech therapy collection.
